Full Gear 2024 is at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Our commentary team to start the show is Excalibur, Nigel McGuinness, and Tony Schiavone
Max Caster’s rap doesn’t say everyone loves the Acclaimed, and instead everyone loves the best wrestler alive.
Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen) (AEW Tag Team Champions) vs The Outrunners (Truth Magnum and Turbo Floyd) vs Kings of the Black Throne (Malakai Black and Brody King) vs The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens and Max Caster)
The Acclaimed actually catch some boos when they are announced. The Outrunners get the biggest pop by far.
Black and Quen start the match and they trade quick holds. Bowens tags in and gets in Black’s face as Black needs to leave, and the pace speeds up Bowens calls for a tag from Max and Max ignores him while talking to the crowd. Zay tags in and then the Outrunners get tagged in and they work over Quen with quick tags. Zay gets tagged by King, and he and Turbo trade blows, with Turbo firing up after each blow.
Brody tosses Turbo to the outside and then brings in Bowens. Black gets a leaping stomp on Bowens and then dives onto everyone at ringside. Zay is rolled into the ring where the Kings double team him, and then the tag team siren goes off and everyone is in the ring to bring down King. They all hold King so that Bowens can get the Scissor Me Timbers.
There is a sequence where we have The Acclaimed and The Outrunners are in the ring and Max attacks Truth from behind, breaking up anything Bowens was trying to do. It’s super clear the issues with the Acclaimed will be the story of the match. The Outrunners get a nice sequence with Private Party before it goes back to chaos.
From here, we move into a series of two counts. The crowd is chanting what they think of Caster and it’s not positive. Billy Gunn gets on the apron to try to get Caster and Bowens to work together and Caster drops to the mat and calls for Bowens to cover him for a two count. Caster gets a blind tag when Bowens comes off the ropes for a rollup. Caster calls for a mic drop and because of them not being on the same page, Private Party hits the Gin and Juice on Caster for the pin and their win.
Winners and still AEW Tag Team Champions: Private Party
Lexi Nair is with Orange Cassidy, and Cassidy says the Death Riders send him a message and tonight he sends a message back. He says AEW means everything to him, Private Party and everyone in the arena. Tonight, he shows Jon Moxley AEW doesn’t need him.
Roderick Strong vs MJF
MJF cuts a promo as the bell rings and Roddy attacks him from behind.
They fight on the floor and MJF shoves Roddy's fingers in the turnbuckle tightener and pulls on them. When Roddy is rolled into the ring, he is beaten down. MJF keeps going back to Roddy’s hand and yells that Roddy is trash and no one cares about him as he does so. Roddy is able to get a half nelson backbreaker, and both men struggle to get to their feet.
Strong takes over when they do get up and gets a big flurry of offense. He gets to take control and beat down MJF until MJF gets a double stomp on Roddy’s back. He then puts Roddy in a guillotine hammerlock choke into a DDT. MJF then spits on Roddy, which fires Roddy up. MJF is doing an old school heel match, and it shows why the company has needed him back.
They move to near falls after Roddy gets End of Heartache. Roddy hits a series of finishers and allows MJF to recover enough to hit a gut buster and both men are down again. MJF is able to grab the Salt of the Earth arm bar and Roddy has to tap out.
Winner: MJF
MJF puts a chair around Roddy’s arm and stomps on the chair, which brings out Adam Cole. MJF takes off through the crowd. Mike Bennett, and Kyle O’Reilly also come to the ring and Kyle yells at Cole for arriving too late. Kyle helps Roddy to the back.
Mercedes Moné (AEW TBS Champion) vs Kris Statlander
Kamille was told by Mone to watch the match from catering as punishment for her “mistakes” the last few weeks. Mone’s ring gear is pretty amazing.
The match starts with Statlander hitting a lot of power moves, moving slowly as she does so and Mone trying to find places to take a cheap attack. Mone gets a hurricanrana off the apron, which switches up the momentum. There was a time when Mone got a rollup next to the ropes and didn’t grab them, holding onto Statlander’s legs instead.
The second time, she DOES grab the ropes. Mone has been using a lot of flying moves and using her legs for her attacks. Mone gets frustrated to the point of screaming as Statlander is able to kick out. Mone’s facial expressions are completely on point as she shows both frustration and hate.
Statlander starts hitting a series of power moves with Mone finding a way to keep from being pinned after each one. Mone throws a fit after Statlander kicks out of two counts. I like how the match is slow, methodical and more based on personalities than a lot of high spots and people working in lots of moves. This match is working the crowd well, bringing them along on a ride.
The crowd is right along with all of the near falls, and really want to see Statlander win. Statlander misses a 450 splash from the top and Mone goes right after the knee Statlander landed on. The camera work, zooming on Mone’s face after Statlander is able to kick out. Mone hits two backstabbers and a Gori bomb for two. They trade moves until Mone gets a casadora into the middle rope and gets a jack knife pin for the win.
Winner and still TBS Champion: Mercedes Mone
Fantastic match and reminded me why Mone was able to be a huge star in WWE as part of the Women’s Revolution. Statlander didn't look like a failure either, Mone was just a step faster.
