Welcome to my ongoing Clash At The Castle blog. I am fired up for this one. The pre-show did a great job of setting the table for the event. As I always say, the who and the why for the matches are every bit as important for the match itself.
Michael Cole and Corey Graves are joined by Wade Barrett, which is awesome. I am happy for Wade that he can call this one in The UK. Scotland is ready so let's go! We are opening hot!
Cody Rhodes defends his World Title against AJ Styles.
The champ is out and the fans are fired up, singing his song as he makes his way to the ring. Cody is a little more reserved than usual, which he should be given what AJ did to set up the match. Cole tells us that this is Cody's first I Quit match. AJ is 4-0 in them, outside of the US. Before getting in the ring, Cody hugs Mama Rhodes. The music stopped but the crowd kept singing. Very cool.
Corey just brought up the granddaddy of them all, Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard. Man, I still remember that one.
The fans are chanting. This will be a live crowd.
Cody tossed AJ into the Prime table but AJ said no. Now they are brawling into the audience. Cody took a beer from a fan (in a Cody shirt) and smashed AJ in the face with it.
They are now in the back of the building. Ref Dan Engler will get his steps in today.
Corey wondered if AJ was playing rope-a-dope so Cody would wear himself out. Cole wondered if AJ was playing dope-a-dope taking a beating. Great line.
Cody has AJ in the ring in the Figure 4. AJ got to the ropes and got out of the move.
They just both crashed and burned out of the ring to floor but AJ got up first and splattered Cody on the announce table. He followed by nailing Cody with a brain buster on the table. Cody refused to quit. AJ got in Mama Rhodes' face and she would have none of it. Go Mama Rhodes.
And, we have color and Cody has bladed. Clearly WWE is OK with using the blade again. I don't love it but it's not my call. It will add drama to the match so if they are going to do it, they are doing it when it means something.
Cody said ABSOLUTELY NOT when asked if he would quit. Then he said NO. AJ he isn't even close to that point. Get back to work son.
The fans are chanting F*** You AJ while he is beating up the champ. Cody fires back with a back drop off of the steps. Wade just mentioned that Scotland fans are angry because they got beaten in football yesterday. Ouch! The England-Scotland rivalry is real folks.
Cody's comeback was thwarted by a Pele Kick and a DDT (which unlike Will Ospreay against Rey Fenix Cody actually sold). But he still said he would not quit. AJ has been in control for a while.
AJ took a chair and a cane to Cody, who is taking a beating but refusing to quit. Will he quit? HELL NO! His cut isn't bleeding like it was.
AJ is whipping Cody with a belt. I don't know what happened for a minute or so because Peacock locked up.
When I came back AJ got some handcuffs. AJ put the cuffs on Cody, behind his back. AJ beat on him with the cane but Cody refused to quit.
AJ got in Mama Rhodes' face again. He poked her and Mama Rhodes slapped him a few times. AJ picked up a chair and feigned going after Mama but pasted Cody instead. AJ put a chain on his forearm but Cody, who had managed to get the cuffs to his front, was able to throw a chair at his head. If they are going to do it, at least it wasn't a direct hit. AJ went through a table when he fell to the floor. AJ came up bleeding. Cody got the key and unlocked the cuffs. He is now using the chain from the cuffs. AJ missed a Styles Clash in the corner. Cody hit a Cutter. He said you're gonna say it and hit a CrossRoads. And another. One more time but this time on a chair.
Cody told the ref not to ask AJ if he quits. He wants to do more. Cody grabbed the cuffs and now AJ is attached to the ropes. Cody has the chair and he is taking it to AJ, big time. The fans love it. AJ do you quit? SCREW YOU CODY RHODES! That's a no.
Cody went back to work with the chair and then got the ring steps. He threw them in the ring. Before he could use them, AJ popped up and said he quit. Discretion was the better part of valor.
It didn't work though because Cody blasted him with the steps anyway. The fans loved it and are singing his song.
I don't love the blood but I sure as hell loved the match. And again, if they are going to do blood, it should be in a match like this where it would logically happen. Great match to open the show.
As Cody was leaving, Solo Sikoa came out. They faced off when Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa came out from behind and attacked him. KO and Randy Orton immediately came out to make the save. We are brawling all over Glasgow. The faces ran off the heels and brought Cody out to take another bow. Great stuff.
Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill defend their Tag Team Titles against Alba Fyre/Isla Dawn and Shayna Baszler/Zoey Stark.
The locals were out first. Big pop. That has to feel good for themCole told us that Alba Fyre was from Paisley. Funny fact, that's where my wife's parents came to America from. No wonder I am a huge Alba fan. Champs got a nice pop as well.
Bianca started and was really impressive. She is amazing. She tagged in Jade and she got to do power spots on two women at once. Jade did some impressive stuff.
The challengers realized that they had to work together to have a chance against the champs so they did.
Of course once the champs were out on the floor Shayna and Zoey turned and went to work. Fyre just did one of her signature spots and came flying off the top to wipe out Shayna and Zoey. That's Alba for ya!
The challengers are mostly taking on each other right now. Good stuff.
Bianca came in and did a superplex on Zoey where they landed with a thud. She tagged Jade who slipped badly springboarding in but she recovered really well. I would have yelled for my Mommy.
Shayna got the Clutch on Jade and she clearly tapped but the ref didn't see it. Not sure if that was intentional.
Bianca came off the top with a brutal knee to the back of Shayna. The champs had Shayna after a big combo when Dawn came in and suplexed Jade and then covered Shayna, 1-2-3! New tag champs! I did NOT see that coming. Remember when Vince used to embarrass people in their hometowns? Triple H does just the opposite. Love that finish! Who knows how long they will hold them but for today, they got a massive win in their hometown. How awesome is that!
Cole then talked about how it's got to be emotional for Fyre, just as she cried. For those who missed it, her mom recently passed. They got flowers from family at ringside and then went back in the ring and took it all in. How great that had to feel for them.
Wow, I still can't believe they pulled the trigger there. Very cool.
