Trish Stratus on TSN's Off the Record Report
Michael Landsberg asked Trish why she retired. She said because it was time, stating "I had been in the business for almost 7 years. It was a contract thing. The contract came up." Michael said she could have another contract, and if he looked over the history of wrestling, very few retire, very few do what Trish was doing, so why is she retiring. Is it because there’s a change in life for her? Trish said she wants to stop and smell the roses. “There are a couple of things around me. My contract came up beginning of September, do I want to re-sign for three to five years? I’ve been in the business for seven years. I’ve been on the grind for seven years, and the Unforgiven PPV in Toronto was the middle of September, and my wedding is happening at the end of September, and it’s a change of life."
Michael asked did she feel she cannot be married and live the life of a wrestler. She said “No, that is a beginning of my next chapterâ€ÂÂÂÂ.
Michael said the physical toll of being a wrestler is huge, and she has suffered pretty serious injuries, and asked her how many of that was a factor. She said it was a small part of it, “I had a back injury, a dislocated shoulder and when I’m off and was at home and had this real life stuff in front of me - the number of friends that have had their first child, I missed that. My mom was ill, I couldn’t be by her side. Real life things made me think, 'I want to stop and enjoy life a little bit' and the only way I got through seven years of that lifestyle was from all these people around me, friends and family supporting me. So it felt like it was time to give back."
Michael said he never saw her the way he saw a lot of other wrestlers, he never thought she was a lifetime wrestler, and asked if she saw herself as not being a 'lifetimeer, that it was one stage in her life. She said she didn’t think about that, “Even the career I got, sort of came out nowhere. Thanks to this show, and I just went with the flow. Then it was suddenly, I was a wrestler.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael said when she first started out with the WWE, she was there because of her physical appeal. Trish laughed and said “I was hot. You can say that, Michaelâ€ÂÂÂÂ. Michael continued and said she wasn’t really wrestling at the beginning. He was wondering that through the years, did she turn down storylines, because Vince liked to push the sex angle, and will take it further than where people want to go, so did she say “No, I don’t do that†?
She said “I was never comfortable with the whole sex kitten thing of it all, and Vince wants the person to be comfortable and that’s the only way you’re going to come across to convey a confident message."
Michael asked did Vince ever have to push her and say 'there’s a reason that she’s doing what she’s doing, because she sells sex'? Trish said “A few times. I trusted him and I always knew he would never steer me wrong.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael asked if the male wrestlers respect her. She said “Yeah, I feel like they did. I think especially right now where I’m being one of the veterans on the roster. Yeah, just this last couple weeks, you know, with my retirement being announced, I’ve had a few wars with a lot of the guys and it’s been really touching"
Michael said “You wanted to be taken more seriously than a lot of the previous women who were there only as eye candy. Were there guys that you never convinced? Randy Orton, for example?†She said “No, I convinced him. My main goal was always to prove myself to the fans and to the guys in the back that I belonged in the ring, that I could bring it like the guys do.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael asked why she hasn’t been in Playboy. She said it wasn’t her style, “Honestly, I wanted people to always remember me as 'Trish, the greatest woman wrestler in there'.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael said “Because you wanted to be taken serious as a wrestler, but wrestling isn’t serious!†Trish said “But at this point, people can say “Trish, she was the Seven-time WWE Woman Championâ€ÂÂÂÂ, or they can say “Oh Trish, she was in Playboy.â€Â†Michael asked would she consider it now, since she has retired. “No, it’s not my style. It’s just not my style. I’m like a natural tomboy. I’m a fighter. I’m an athlete.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael said he met Trish seven or eight years ago and she said she wanted to be involved in WWE and she did it, and he congratulated her on that. He thinks it’s a remarkable story. “You went about it like a business and built the business of Trish Stratus.â€ÂÂÂÂ
They came back to the “Next Question†segment, where Michael will ask any question and the guest could choose to answer it or not.
Michael asked “You studied Biology in York University. You wanted to study Medicine. Are you smarter than Vince McMahon?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Yes, sir.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Your fiancé is an Italian. How many people will be attending your wedding? And how many of them would you know?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Close to 350. And I’ll know about 100 of themâ€ÂÂÂÂ
“Who on the WWE roster is coming?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Next question.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Who on the current WWE roster definitely won’t be getting an invitation to your wedding? Give me one name of someone you’re not inviting.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Gene Snitsky.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Who was hitting on you in the locker room?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“No oneâ€ÂÂÂÂ
Michael was surprised. Trish said “I’m not their type, I guessâ€ÂÂÂÂ
“Best part about being on the road?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Getting to see the worldâ€ÂÂÂÂ
“Worst part about being on the road?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Getting to see the world, but not actually getting to see the world.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Who’s a better kisser, Mickie James or Pamela Anderson?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“That’s a tough one. Pamela Anderson all the way.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Which male wrestler spent the most time in front of a mirror?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Randy Ortonâ€ÂÂÂÂ
“You worked with Chyna. Who was more masculine, Chyna or your fiancé?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Chyna. 100%. No offence to my fiancé.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Storyline with the boys bursting into your dressing room. Did they see more than you wanted them to see?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Yes, it happens. But you know what, it’s just like being 'part of the boys'.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Of all the outfits, did you have a Janet Jackson type of wardrobe malfunction?
“Last night on my very last match. A whole lot of crack. And if you notice, a few times where my body had to be readjusted.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“In concern with that, is televised wrestling no longer for children?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Certain segments.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“How long does it take for you to get your makeup on prior to a match?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“40 minutes.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“What’s the funniest thing a fan has ever yelled while you were performing?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“You’re fat.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“And what’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever heard?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Take off your shoes. Let’s see your toes.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Do they need The Rock back?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“They don’t need him back.â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Can you wrap it up with a Vince McMahon impersonation for you?â€ÂÂÂÂ
“Sure. “Michael Landsberg, You’re fired!†"
