WWE NEWS AND NOTES
by Mike Johnson

It appears Chris Benoit will be back in action by next weekend as he's advertised for several Smackdown house shows, including 9/9 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Benoit took time off in June to let some lingering injuries heal and help his wife (the former Woman in WCW and ECW) recover from surgery. There was also a belief that he was upset over his scheduled match with Dean Malenko at the ECW One Night Stand 2006 PPV being called off as the PPV was re-designed to launch the ECW brand as a full fledged WWE product. As irony would have it, Mark Henry took out Benoit within the context of the Smackdown storylines, but he's now out with his own major injuries and isn't expected back for a long time, so Benoit's first ready-made feud is already out the window.

WWE developmental star Ryan Wilson, the former Trytan in TNA, will be getting a look on the Smackdown house show loop next weekend in Florida, working under the ring name "Titius."

For those of you who are Gamers out there, the IGN.com website has a confirmed list of WWE talents that will be used in the Raw vs. Smackdown 2007 Video Game at this link.

Tim sent the following....The UPN here in Lubbock TX has already gone to using the My Lubbock TV logo. They are transitioning to that next week. The logo has been put up over their locally run programming, but also somehow they’ve been obtaining clean feeds from UPN (including Smackdown last night) to put their own logo on. The conglomerate that owns the UPN, also recently acquired rights to the WB from the NBC station in town, and they will be going with a CW affiliation when the changeover occurs. This is taking Smackdown off of the over the air broadcasts here and putting it on just cable.

Where Are They Now: Former WWF star and MMA legend Dan severn sent out the following to his mailing list yesterday..."Fayetteville, NC. I had a busy weekend conducting a series of seminars and appearances. We conducted one Thursday night, August 14th that was open to the general public, covering topics, such as, closing the distance, clinches, takedowns, and finishing techniques inside the guard. Friday morning working with military personnel from Fort Bragg, going over the clinch, striking from feet, takedowns, throws, and finishing techniques, both on the feet and on the mat. By Friday afternoon working with children, taking them through a gymnastic warm-up, stretches, and then, into kicking and takedown drills. By Friday night I was right back on the mats working with adults again, with part two of what he started the day before… working on finishes from the guard and cross body positions."

I had the chance to check out the Service Electric 2-Sports story on the recent WWE tryouts at Afa's school in Allentown, PA. The most interesting thing in the story was WWE Executive Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis noting that they were looking at the possibility of adding a WWE developmental area not just in the Northeast, but in the Southeast as well. There's been talk of doing something based out of Steve Keirn's school in Florida off and on over the last year. Batista, Afa, and several potential wrestlers who were trying out were interviewed. Michael Cole and Simon Dean were also at the tryouts.

Kevin McGuffey noted that there were some problems with the most recent Ohio Valley Wrestling TV airing, writing, "When I went to check my tape of OVW from this week you could hear audio from OVW but the video was two paid programs, the Yoga Booty Ballet and another program. It was pretty humorous actually, not sure if it was a problem in Lexington with Insight cable or if that is how it went out everywhere. I e-mailed someone at WBKI to see if they might re-run it but of course it being Labor Day, no one in any sort of management will be in."

Speaking of OVW, this past week's TV was CM Punk's final appearance with the developmental territory as a full-time talent, but I expect he'll pop up here and there like so many other WWE talents that came up through the territory do.
