MSNBC.com takes a look at the WWE's latest financial earnings at this link.
From the "bad timing" department: WWE recently released Kurt Angle ECW Mouthpieces for sale.
Brian Rose sent the following....It seems that for those who like in the Imperial County region of Southern California (Yuma, Brawley, El Centro, and other cities) will not be getting Smackdown in their area until the CW launches. We usually get San Diego or LA affiliates, but some of our affiliates come from the Imperial Valley. KCOP, our UPN affiliate, has already abandoned UPN programming, and instead will be airing movies during Smackdown's time. I checked the schedule for our WB (and soon to be CW) affiliate, KUWB, with Smackdown nowhere in sight.
The ECW website has articles online with ECW World champion Big Show and Paul Heyman, out of character, discussing their excitement with SciFi picking up ECW as a TV series until December 2007. Heyman commented, "This extension means that we now have the ability to think long term. What do we envision for Big Show at WrestleMania? The twists for RVD, Sandman and Sabu. When will C.M. Punk be put to the test? Who are the next breakout stars that have yet to debut on ECW? In the original ECW, Sabu vs. Tazz was the number one storyline for 18 months, and they never touched each other until our first pay-per-view. We had the luxury of long term planning. Now, we finally have that luxury again, to take the time to tell these kinds of epic stories.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Show praised the ECW fans and the performers, noting that his current run is the most fun he's had in a long time (and that's shown in his performances, in my opinion), noting, "“ECW has such a great fan base. They are the strangest, most incredible fans I’ve ever performed for. They understand the product. They express themselves like no others, and at the end of the day, they are extremely respectful. The ECW fans are the real winners here because they deserve this. To those fans, I want to say thank you. You have put ECW back on the map.â€ÂÂÂÂ
As far as a potential expansion of ECW on TV, Heyman commented, "I would also love to see a 75 or 90 minute offering of ECW as well, but if they told me tomorrow, ‘we are going to two hours’, we’d be ready. It would give us more time for longer matches, more characters like C.M. Punk to introduce, more time to explain the background of legends like Sabu, Sandman and Tommy Dreamer. But right now, one-hour is a god-send. It sure beats marketing only the memories. Now, we’re creating new moments, new characters and new memories. This is a fantasy come true.â€ÂÂÂÂ
Gerard Doyle in Ireland sent the following...The United States champion Finlay was featured in the Irish Daily Mirror today where he was wrongly referred to as having "won the WWE World Championship belt, following in the footsteps of Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and movie star The Rock". Finlay comments: "I never would have believed that I'd hit these heights at 48 years old, but it shows you can achieve anything in life if you want it badly enough. I still come home to Belfast all the time just to chill out."
Also up on the ECW.com website is an article by Joey Styles detailing his first-ever meeting with Paul Heyman back in 1993 as well as some funny accompanying photos from back when Styles was an intern for Pro Wrestling Illustrated Magazine in Long Island, New York and Heyman was working as a manager for WCW.
John Cena will appear on the next season of Punk'd on MTV.
Former WWE star Stacy Keibler will appear on today's edition of the syndicated Tyra Banks talk show.
Jimmy Hart has been added to the list of wrestling guests at the Big Apple Comic Con on 9/15 and 9/16 in New York City. Also appearing are Lou Albano, Bruno Sammartino, Larry Zbyszko, The Wild Samoans, and more.
ECW's Trinity will be appearing at the October Chiller Theatre convention in New Jersey, listed under her real name Stephanie Fonochio.
The Palatka Daily News featured an update on hometown girl Michelle McCool, noting she would be taking part in WWE Smackdown's upcoming tour of Israel.
Blake Buckman sent the following update on the former Governor of Minnesota... past couple days I've been listening to ESPN Radio and I heard a commercial that I was a little surprised to hear. It seems "Governor Ventura" is giving his full endorsement to a betting establishment called BetUS. The commercial opens with an official sounding voice announcing "The former Governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura" which he then goes on the plug.
Former WWE and Tough Enough star Chris Nowinski has turned his career-ending concussion into a deep look into the problematic issue of concussions with a book that will be released on 10/1 titled, "Head Games: Football's Concussion Crisis."
On his MySpace.com website, Nowinski wrote about the project, commenting that in regard to concussions in sports, "I quickly discovered that what the medical community knows about concussions and what the sports world knows are miles apart. I decided to bridge that gap. In the short term, sports concussions can lead to emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disorders, and sometimes even death. In the long term, they can increase one's risk of Alzheimer's, depression, and many other neurological disorders. 10 times more concussions are happening in football than are diagnosed, because kids aren't speaking up, much like I didn't until I'd had too many. This book will show parents and athletes what these life altering consequences of concussions are, and what they can do to minimize their exposure. It will also help former athletes understand what those concussions have done to their brains, and what they can expect in the future."
UPDATE ON FORMER WWE AND TOUGH ENOUGH STAR CHRIS NOWINSKI
by Mike Johnson
Promotional material for the book reads, "In 2003, WWE wrestler Christopher Nowinski took a kick to the head that knocked him out of professional wrestling and sent him on a journey that could change the way contact sports are played.
Nowinski, a former Harvard football player, suddenly found himself suffering from a constellation of debilitating symptoms that included cognitive problems, severe headaches, and depression. Doctors eventually diagnosed him with post-concussion syndrome, but they couldn't tell him why that specific kick to the head created this problem, nor if he would ever get healthy enough to return to his job. His personal quest to understand his condition led him to discover that he had suffered not one concussion, but many over the course of an amateur career in football and his professional career in wrestling, and it was the cumulative effect of these injuries that had ended his career. He also learned that the worst was not necessarily behind him, as he uncovered research linking multiple concussions with serious long-term neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, memory impairment, and depression.
Most disturbing, however, was not what the research said was happening to Chris, but to the young athletes who play contact sports. He discovered that concussions happen with frightening regularity, but over 9 out of 10 go undiagnosed. The lack of awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of these injuries causes children to die every year on athletic fields and many others to acquire permanent brain damage, some immediate, and some that won’t reveal themselves for decades. Worst of all, he found that while the most popular and violent of American sports, football, is literally overwhelmed by a concussion crisis, parents, coaches, and players on all levels remain without the information and means to protect themselves, and NFL officials actively seek to undermine and discredit the legitimate and valuable research that could make the difference between life and death for so many young athletes.
Head Games takes readers through Nowinski's journey to diagnosis, then deeper into an understanding of this far-reaching national crisis. The book includes interviews with NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson, Merril Hoge, Doug Flutie, Pete Cronan, Leigh Steinberg, Sylvia Mackey, dozens of college and youth football players, and top doctors in the field of sports concussion."
Nowinski, currently a consultant with Trinity Partners in Waltham, MA, specializing in commercial strategy and licensing and acquisitions in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries, regularly lectures about the dangers of concussions. Head Games features an introduction by former Minnesota Governor and WWE Hall of Famer Jesse Ventura.
