Welcome to my live, ongoing AEW Double or Nothing 2024 blog, sponsored by our great friends at RingsideCollectibles.com, who have a ton of AEW and WWE action figures on sale right now as part of their Memorial Day Sale!
Next is the AEW Trios Championship with the Bang Bang Gang vs. Death Triangle. This was super physical. Pac's chest was beat red. Rey Fenix was on fire with his spots. Death Triangle were going to have it won but the returning Juice Robinson, who was out with a back issue, returned to help. The match was good and for once, there was a good reason for Rick Knox to actually be distracted as he was stopping one of the Gunns from bringing a bat into the ring! Solid stuff but you could feel the crowd was more buzzing over MJF as opposed to this bout.
AEW Women's Champion Toni Storm vs. Serena Deeb is next. Does anyone have eyes on Wendi Richter? Deeb was pushed as Storm's equal when it came to evading and countering moves. Storm nailed a hip attack to knock her off the apron to the floor. Deeb knocked her out of the ring and hit a neckbreaker on the floor. The crowd was solidly behind Storm, since she's the "cooler" character. Deeb used an Octopus. Storm Bit the rope to force a break. That was different. Lots of Deeb using moves to wear her down. The action was good. Mechanically, Deeb looked real good. Luther kept leading Toni chants, even though she's a heel. Well, OK. Deeb was on the offense for quite some time and locked on a single leg Boston Crab. Mariah May wanted to toss in the towel but Luther stopped her. The story was Toni thought Luther was going to do it. Storm finally hit Storm Zero but Deeb kicked out. Deeb nailed two face-first piledrivers but Storm kicked out. Those should have been finishers. They batted to the top, where Storm nailed a piledriver off the ropes, then hit another. OH, SO THAT was the finisher! They wrestled really hard but I don't think the crowd really thought Deeb was going to win. But, they worked super hard but it might have been much better if it was shorter because you could feel moments where time sort of stood still.
Storm laid on the ramp after a confetti cannon went off, acting like she was swimming. That was cute.
The Mercedes vs. Willow t-shirts have sold out live in Vegas.
Next is Trent Beretta vs. Orange Cassidy. Even though this is a bitter feud, Beretta has challenged OC to a wrestling match. Cassidy came out to his original AEW theme. He came out in a black shirt, because he's, well, angry. They began fighting right away. OC was in control and hit a tope to the outside. Beretta cut him off, going for the throat. The crowd chanted that he sucks. Beretta nailed a big Saito Suplex. They battled to the apron, where Beretta nailed a piledriver on Cassidy. Cassidy battled back and they kept reversing each other's stufff with the idea that they knew each other so intimately. Beretta went for a triangle choke but out of nowhere, Cassidy transitioned into a pinfall combination, using the ropes to set it up and scored the pin. Beretta was seething over losing. He walked out, blowing off Renee Pacquette and Rocky Romero, saying he was done and walked out through the crowd.
Next is the FTW title bout with Hook, Shibata and Chris Jericho. Jericho seems really overexposed of late so he'll need a strong performance here to change that perception, in my opinion. Nice reaction for Hook. Hook went right for a table as the idea is they are under FTW (ECW?) rules. Shibata kicked Hook and Jericho off the apron to the floor and whipped them into the barricade. Jericho gained control and dumped a bag of dice in the ring. Hook and Shibata nailed a double back suplex on the dice. Shibata nailed a suplex on Hook on the dice. Hook and Shibata grabbed Kendo Sticks. They beat the hell out of Jericho.
Shibata took out Hook and brought a table into the ring. Who ever thought SHIBATA would be in a hardore match? Jericho was placed on the table. Hook and Shibata battled on top as Jericho tensed his body waiting. They attempted a DVDR over the top but they went over Jericho, with the table falling over. Whoops! Jericho was tossed through the table in the corner to make it up to the fans for the table failing to work with everyone as planned. Those tables are shooters, you know.
Shibata locked Hook and Jericho into submissions at the same time. Hook took out Shibata and locked Redrum on but Big Bill attacked Hook. He tried to chokeslam Hook off the apron through a table but Hook escaped and nailed a Northern Lights suplex off the apron through the table, which looked AWESOME. That spot did more for Hook than anything else in this storyline. It was also extremely scary looking as Bill looked to almost stab himself in the wood.
Jericho and Shibata traded submissions. Hook locked a choke on Jericho. A masked man attacked everyone and hit a senton bomb on Hook, after smashing him with a trash can. The masked man unveiled himself to be Bryan Keith. Jericho hired a bounty hunter. Does that make Hook the Han Solo of AEW? Jericho picked the bones and scored the pin. Hook laid out several members of security and chased after Jericho. How any of this benefits Hook, I don't know. I just hope when this is done, he's in a better place than Action Andretti ended up. I guess we will see....if you liked chaos, this was for you. It wasn't for me. It was the weakest thing on the show by FAR. Jericho needs a lot of time off TV in my mind.
Next up is Jon Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita. Moxley is all taped up on his arm and shoulder, so the story is he's at a great disadvantage. Takeshita was in control early. He snapped Moxley's fingers. They battled on the floor where Moxley's arm was caught in a chair and stomps. Back in the ring, he continued to work over the arm. He began battering Moxley with shots to the jaw. Moxley dared him to bring it. That never made any sense to me. You could get KO'd. Terry Funk never tried to get himself knocked out! They battled back and forth until Konosuke locked on a Fujwara armbar. He powerbombed Mox and went back to it.
They acted like Moxley was on the verge of submitting but it didn't feel that way based on the live crowd reactions. Mox knocked him to the floor and hit a tope on Takeshita, looking like a flying mummy with the bandage flapping.Back in the ring, Moxley nailed a big lariat as Takeshita charged. Takeshita still recovered first and drilled him with a driver and then a wheelbarrow Tazplex. Mox caught him charging and nailed the Paradigm Shift. The crowd loved that and chanted this is awesome. Takeshita kept beating the hell out of Moxley, but Mox kept kicking up. Moxley finally returned with a Death Rider and scored the pin. I don't know how this advanced anything for anyone, but the live crowd loved Mox. This was too long.
