THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK: MIKE'S COMPLETE WRESTLEMANIA 40 NIGHT ONE BLOG FROM LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD

By Mike Johnson on 2024-04-06 18:53:00

Next up is Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso!

Lil' Wayne had Philly dancing.

Jey hit a dive on Jimmy as he came to ringside.  They battled around before the bell officially rang.  LOTS of YEET chants and yells.

The sponsorships on the apron and boards are starting to become distracting to me personally, but that's the new normal.

Jimmy's facial expressions before snapping a superkick in Jey's face were absolutely great.  Jimmy mised a stomp off the top, allowing Jey to drill him with a kick.

It turned into, and I cannot believe I am writing this, a superkick party as they kept going to town on each other.

They showed that Jey was trying to show some compassion for Jimmy when  he was down.  Don't do it Jey!  Owen Hart pulled this on Helen Hart to make her throw in the towel on Bret Hart at the 1993 Survivor Series.  Jimmy proved himself to be a snake and attacked his brother.  Jey nailed a big spash off the top and scored the clean pin.

This was solid but not what I think a lot of fans were expecting going in.  I don't think it was the blowaway ending of the feud, so there will be more to come, certainly.

The big six women's tag team bout is next - Bianca Belair & Jade Cargill & Naomi vs. Damage CTRL.

Some nice reactions for each team.  I'm not sure why but Asuka was dancing to her opponent's music.  Naomi nailed a split legdrop off the ropes.  KAIRI nailed a big flying elbow off the apron to the floor.    Asuka worked over Naomi with a lot of kicks.  Naomi tried to fight her way out of CTRL's corner.  Bianca made the ta and cleaned house.  Bianca was spotlighted and effortlessly looked great with her moves and power.  She remain one of the all time best athletes they've ever hired.

The crowd wanted Jade and chanted for her.  There was a big pop for her tag in.  She walloped everyone with big moves.  She caught KAIRI coming off the ropes and slammed her, then drilled Kai and nailed her but CTRL attacked.  The babyfaces turned the tide of battle and Jade killed Dakota with the Implant Buster for the pin.

This will be most remembered for being Cargill's first Wrestlemania bout.  Solid and it was about making Jade a big star.

We are told an attendance announcement is coming.

By the way, it is FRIGGING COLD.  Every time someone up here opens a window, I wonder if we are on Hoth.  If a Tauntaun runs by, I'll update.

GUNTHER vs. Sami Zayn for the WWE Intercontinental title is next.   They showed Sami with his family.

GUNTHER is on Day # 666 today.  NO kidding  Hope that's not a bad omen!

You have to love GUNTHER's theme.  It's forboding like the Jaws theme.

Sami tried his best early to figure out the GUNTHER puzzle but kept getting grabbed and suplexed or chopped down.  GUNTHER tied up Zayn in the ropes and tore at him.  Zayn kept trying to get some momentum going but was stopped at every turn.   Zayn finally scored with a running lariat and nailed a tornado DDT off the ropes.  He went for a Blue Thunder Bomb but GUNTHER blocked it.  GUNTHER blocked it and cinched in a Tazmission.

Sami tried to fight for the ropes but was snatched up in a German suplex.  Zayn nailed hiout of nowhere with the Helluva kick and nearly scored the pinfall.  He charged but was turned inside out with a lariat and a pair of powerbombs but Zayn got his shoulder up at the last second.    GUNTHER trash talked Zayn to his wife in the front row.  GUNTHER turned into the stomping machine, beating and punishing Zayn, who was down in the corner.  GUNTHER powerbomed Sami again and went back to mocking Zayn's wife.

GUNTHER nailed a splash off the top and didn't even go for the pinfall, instead laughing at Mrs. Zayn.  He went back to the top and repeated the feat.    Zayn began to fight back and get some life in him.  He cut off GUNTHER on the top and nailed a brainbuster off the top into the ring.  He nailed he Helluvakick and followed up with another, then SCORED the pinfall.

666 was unlucky for GUNTHER after all.

Your winner, Sami Zayn, the new Intercontinental Champion.

This was a textbook babyface hero vs. monster villain.  Well put together and executed by all involved.

Zayn embraced his wife in a nice moment.  Zayn celebrated in the ring.
