Welcome to PWInsider.com's live, ongoing coverage of Ring of Honor's Best in the World 2021.
HOUR ONE:
Your hosts are Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman.
It was announced ROH Tag Team Champion Tracy Williams has not been cleared to compete by the Maryland State Athletic Commission after being hit by a car in NYC a few weeks ago, so Jay Lethal will sub for him.
They ran down the lineup for the PPV, which you can check out below.
Rey Horus vs. Demonic Flamita
They started out hot with Horus hitting dives to the outside. He worked over Flamita and sent him into the ring. Horus was cut off by Flamita, who nailed a dropkick to the head and attempted to pin him in a disrespectful manner, stepping on his chest. Flamita continued to control Horus on the mat and placed him on the top rope before tearing at the mask, trying to expose Horus' identity. He tied Horus to the tree of woe and nailed a running dropkick to the face. The crowd (and it's so nice to type that) tried to rally Horus.
Horus was sent to the floor and tried to walk away from a dive but Horus re-directed his trajectory and took him out on another side of the ring. Back in the ring, Horus nailed a tornado DDT, taking out Flamita for a two count. Flamita is sent up and over but lands on his feet and drilled Horus with a tornado DDT, then hit a big powerbomb for a two count. Flamita ascended to the top and went for a frog splash but Horus pulled his knees up. With Flamita stunned, the crowd clapped to rally Horus.
Horus dared Flamita to hit him and they went back and forth with punches and forearms. Flamita faked him out with a back fist and nailed a big right. Flamita nailed a superkick but Horus avoided a lucha takedown and snapped up into a DDT for another two count. Flamita went to the top but Horus kicked him in the back of the legs. He nailed an enziguiri. He drilled a muscle buster across his own knees for a two count. He went for another move but Horus turned it into a Code Red for the pin.
Your winner, Rey Horus!
Flamita attacked him immediately after the bell. He spit on the fallen Horus and walked off.
A good opening match with some nice high energy flying early on.
They aired highlights of the Rush vs. Bandido storyline leading to tonight's main event.
They showed Rush and friends arriving at the venue.
They recapped the Tony Deppen vs. Dragon Lee setup for tonight.
Kenny King came out on the stage and welcomed Baltimore back to Ring of Honor. He said he represents La Faccion. Since there are no championship opportunities for him, he won't be competing tonight. So, he's going to play fortune teller. He predicted they were going to win every match tonight and leave with all the gold. He said ROH TV Champion Tony Deppen was 97 lbs. of kangaroo crap. He said Dragon Lee was going to take the title and that Deppen has as much of a chance of winning as Baltimore does of winning against the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. He guaranteed Lee would leave as champion tonight. He said La Faccion is a weapon and after they are done with Deppen, they were going to take out Bandido. He said Bandido was a peasant who didn't deserve to be in the ring with Rush. He said the entire company will be their empire and they were declaring open season on everyone.
They aired a Jay Lethal vs. Brody King preview. They then previewed Mike Bennett challenging Jonathan Gresham for the Pure title.
A disheveled Matt Taven came out to do his Trending with Taven segment. He said he should be happy to be there but the last time, The Righteous injured him and he needed several surgeries. There were good memories since ROH returned but they are ruined by someone he used to want to trust and call a friend, Vincent. He said he doesn't want to do this but there's only one way for this to end. Vincent and The Righteous made their way to the ring.
Vincent took the mic and said this was all euphoric. He asked Taven why he had the long face and the sob story. This was all he wanted - all the people chanting for him. The announcers noted that the Board of Directors had banned them from touching. Taven had a contract for 8/21 in Philadelphia at Glory by Honor. Taven said if Vincent agrees, win, lose or draw, Taven will leave ROH forever. Vincent said he didn't want Taven's career. It doesn't mean a damn thing to him. He said that he should have known Taven would be unprepared and not bring him what he wanted. He instead wants Taven's shot at the ROH title. Taven said if he puts his title shot on the line, he asks Vincent to face him one last time to end it all. Vincent said Taven tried to lock him away in a cell, so he's going to lock them both up in a steel cage. Taven said he will give him what he wants if Vincent just says yes. Vincent agreed.
Taven said that now that the match has been made, he can't be fired for this and attacked Vincent. Vita Von Starr jumped on his back but he tossed her over the top onto the other members of The Righteous. Taven was nailed with a cane. They all attacked Taven and sent him flying through the neon sign for his segment that hung under a ladder. He crashed to the floor. Vincent said he was buried for four years by Taven and now he's going to return the favor but he'll leave Taven buried up to his eyes so Taven can watch him win the ROH title. They will face off on 8/21 in Philly.
The EC3 vs. Flip Gordon preview video aired next.
They aired a video feature on Josh Woods vs. Silas Young in a Last Man Standing match.
Quinn McKay came out on the stage and plugged ROH's weekly programming. Quinn said that tonight, everyone is going to see the newly minted ROH World Women's Championship as well as the entire bracket for the Women's Championship tournament.
PCO and Danhausen vs.The Bouncers with Ken Dixon.
Brian Milonas knocked PCO out of the ring before the bell, leaving Danhausen to be beaten by The Bouncers. Danhausen tried to fire back but was wiped out by Beer City Bruiser. He slammed Danhausen. Milonas tagged in and dropped himself backwards, squashing Danhausen underneath. The Bouncers tagged in and out, working over the smaller, evil star. Hausen blocked a charge in the corner and then drilled Bruiser with a German suplex.
Danhausen crawled to the corner and made the hot tag to PCO. He attacked Bruiser and slammed him. He nailed a series of chops and right elbows. He clotheslined Milonas down to the mat, then splashed him in the buckles. PCO placed Bruiser on the apron, draping him across the outside. PCO went to the top for a swanton and nailed it, wiping out Bruiser in the process. Big pop in Baltimore for that. PCO then hit a cannonball through the ropes to the floor on Milonas.
Danhausen went for a chokeslam on Bruiser but couldn't get him up. PCO helped him but then malfunctioned. PCO went after his own partner but was tricked into taking out the Bouncers. Sledge came down and stared down PCO in the ring. Ken Dixon stole Danhausen's teeth but he was able to retrieve and poured them into Bruiser's mouth. He superkicked them out then hit a DVDR. PCO nailed a moonsault for the pin.
Your winners, Danhausen & PCO!
Sledge and PCO faced off in the aisle but Danhausen pulled the former ROH Champion away and up the aisle.
This was fine for the time they had and everyone worked hard but the teeth thing is beyond goofy to me personally. People love the hell out of Danhausen, so what the hell do I know? It's not like Conan O'Brien is asking me to be on his podcast!
