RUSH VS. BRODY KING, DRAGON LEE VS. TONY DEPPEN, BRISCOE & PCO VS. LETHAL & GRESHAM & MORE: RING OF HONOR FINAL BATTLE 2020 COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-12-18 23:58:00

ROH Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham vs. Flip Gordon.

The judges are Gary Juster, Will Ferrara and Sumie Sakai if they go 60 minutes.

The shook hands at the bell.

They locked up and went back and forth with some nice wrestling.   Gresham took the challenger to the mat and worked over his legs.  Gordon forced him away and they faced off.  Gresham took him down and tied up his knees, trying to go for a Cloverleaf but Gordon grabbed the ropes several times, so he was down to one rope break left just three minutes into the match.

They went back and forth on the mat.  Gresham snapped him with an armdrag.  Gresham locked on the hammerlock and went for another, trying to scissor the arm.  Gresham drove his knee across Gordon, wearing him down.  Gordon missed a clothesline and Gresham went right back to the hammerlock.  Gordon was forced into the rope and the referee called it as the final rope break.  Gordon wasn't happy and fought back, nailing a leaping enziguiri.

Gordon and Gresham went back and forth.  Gordon scored a two count with a rollup off the ropes.  Gresham used a springboard rana but Gordon landed on his feet and drilled Gresham, covering him from the pin.  Gresham grabbed the rope to break it, so he's down to two.  Gordon nailed him and drilled Gresham with a series of rights.  He went for a springboard but Gordon evaded it and nailed him.  Gresham grabbed at his leg.  Gordon went right after the knee and drilled it to the mat, then kicked away at it, trying to wear down the extremity.

Gordon began trying to break down Gresham,  He scored a Fisherman's suplex for a two count and continued working over the knee.  He locked in a STF but Gresham fought to the ropes, using his second rope break.  Gresham fought back,  They battled to the top rope.  Gresham tried to work over Gordon's arm.  Gordon went for a sunset flip bomb but Gresham stopped it.  Gordon slipped out and nailed a superkick.  He again went back to the STF.  Gresham tried to fight to the ropes but Gordon interceded and blocked it.  Gresham fought back and made it to the ropes.  That was his third and final rope break.

They continued to go back and forth until Gordon used a closed fist, against the rules.  He got a warning for it.  Gresham recovered and they went nose to nose, laying in forearms and kicks.  Gordon tripped him but Gresham leapt up and nailed a step-up enziguiri.  Gordon grabbed the leg and worked it over in a half crab.  He transitioned it into a STF.  The announcers said it was just a matter of time before we have a new champ.  Gresham pulled himself to the ropes and pulled them all the way out, crashing to the floor.

Gresham made a comeback and scored a series of strikes, finally.  They fought to the top and nailed a back hammerlock superplex.  That's an old Gene Anderson spot, just from a higher elevation.  Gresham scored several two count.  Gordon was nailed with a running forearm, then another.  Gordon kicked out but he couldn't intelligently defend himself and the referee stopped the bout and called it for the champ.

Your winner and still champion, Jonathan Gresham!

Gresham offered his hand but Gordon shook his head no and rolled out of the ring.

ROH Champion Rush vs. Brody King

Rush had his shoulder all taped.  They brawled back and forth with big moves until King took down Rush with a big clothesline.  Rush recovered but was nailed with a big forearm and went to the floor.  King nailed a tope suicida, sending Rush backwards into the barricade.  King worked him over on the floor and looked for something under the ring, but didn't find it.  King measured and chopped Rush across the chest, then tossed him again into the barricade.  King picked up and slammed Rush on chairs on the floor, then hit a running back senton splash, which looked stiff.

King brought Rush to the announcer's table and smashed his head into it.  Bobby Cruise wisely left.  King brought Rush back in and chopped away at him.  King whipped him into the corner, nailed several clotheslines and hit a big uranage for a clothesline.  It's very much been King all the way thus far.  King nailed a cannonball in the corner and went for the pin but Rush grabbed the ropes at the last second.  The story has been that King seemed to have his number.

Rush recovered with a back suplex, sending King to the floor.  Rush nailed a dive to the floor.  He sent King into the barricades several times, then worked over King with some hard-hitting shots.  Rush grabbed an electrical cord and choked King with it, trying to drag him across the floor.  He kept working over King and choked him again with the cords.  Rush began playing to the fans and asked them through the camera if they missed being there watching him.  King returned to the ring, where Rush grabbed him in a hanging triangle choke.

Rush worked him over and teased The Bull's Horns but stopped short and nailed him in the head.  Rush mocked him the ring and nailed him with a kick, scoring a two count.  They battled to the top. Brody was caught on the ropes and slipped, crotching himself.  Rush nailed a superplex but Rush arrogantly covered him for another two count.  King came back with a spinning sideslam for another two count.

With each man down and out, the referee began counting them down.  They fought to their feet.  King chopped him hard against the chest but that only woke Rush up.  They began beating each other hard with chops and strikes.  Rush seemed to have King down and out and went for the Bull's Horns but King speared him for a two count.  King went for the Gonza Bomb but Dragon Lee got on the apron.  He distracted the referee, allowing Rush's father, lucha legend La Bestia del Ring to slide in and nail King over the head with a chair.  King crumpled in the corner and was hit with The Bull's Horns.

Your winner and still champion, Rush!

A stiff, hard battle.  They absolutely gave you every reason to think King was going over, right down to Rush coming out with tape on his shoulder and King all but beating him down for a long period of time.

As they went off the air, The Foundation came out on stage and stared down Rush, Dragon Lee and Le Bestia del Ring.

This was a really damn good match but the finish was eh, especially since it seemed like King was forgotten by the staredown.
