They had a really physical, fast paced match that, for some reason, just seemed to be missing something. It wasn’t due to the work but it just seemed like they weren’t overly comfortable with each other. Even though the announcers sold that he was feeling the affects of last night, Owens still got the win with the Pop Up Powerbomb. To me, it was the wrong finish. They could have used him being worn down to have Owens lose. But, they went the other way.
The Night Of Champions is on 9/20.
The main event is next, Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker. Hey WWE, if you want that Oct. 3 show at MSG to matter to Network sales, you know what you need to do here.
Brock came out first, with Paul Heyman. Good pop, as usual. Taker was next. They started hot and stiff, with both guys having their fans. Taker went for Old School. Brock got him and wanted an F5 but Taker got out. Taker wanted a Chokeslam but Brock got out. Brock wanted a big suplex and Taker….didn’t get out. Brock hit another one and said, “Suplex City Bitch”. Boo ya! … Taker ran Brock into the middle turnbuckle and hit Snake Eyes, then the big boot. Lesnar went to the floor. Brock got busted open over the right eye. Second match of the night with hardly blood. It’s not bad at this point. Taker went to work. He put Brock on the edge and did the leg drop on the apron as the fans chanted “You still got it.” Taker then threw hands and went for a chokeslam but got suplexed instead. And another. Brock stalked his prey. He hit another. Brock did his bounce dance in the ring. Taker went to the floor and Brock followed. He went to work on the announce table but before he could do anything Taker hit a big elbow. Kick to the gut but Brock reversed it and hit an F5 on Taker through the table. Cool spot. The fans loved it. Brock went back in the ring and Taker just beat being counted out. Brock is suddenly bleeding way more. He told Taker, “I’ll kill you you son of a bitch”. Taker responded, “You’re gonna have to” and came up with a big chokeslam, and I mean big and high. Brock ran in but got caught into the Tombstone. Two count only!
Down on the mat they started throwing hands. This is good. Just as I typed that the fans chanted it was awesome. Who am I to argue. Lesnar locked on the Kimura but Taker powered out with The Last Ride for a two count. Back on their feet, Lesnar hit another F5 but only got a two count. Taker finally got up and got another F5 but again, two count only. Lesnar started getting frustrated.
Just as they were selling how Lesnar was hurt, Brock went in and got locked into Hell’s Gate in the middle of the ring. Brock got out and locked in the Kimura. Finally, Taker went tried to use the move to pin Brock when the bell rang. The ref said he didn’t call for the bell. As Brock was selling, Undertaker hit Brock in the nuts and locked on Hell’a Gate. He told him tap out. Brock gave him the finger. But then he apparently passed out and the ref called for the bell, saying Taker was the winner.
After the match, the announcers said that the timekeeper went into to business for himself and shouldn’t have rang the bell. So Brock loses when he passed out. On the replay, they showed that Taker actually did tap out.
Paul Heyman went to the bell and rang it like a mofo. He said no, no, no. You all saw it, Taker tapped out so he is the winner. Of course, he isn’t. So this will lead to a rubber match and they had better do the right finish on that one.
The match was really good. I did not love the finish even a little bit, but if it leads to Brock beating Taker convincingly next time they meet it’s not the worst thing in the world.
