ACTION Wrestling “Next Up: Episode 5”
Taped 9/24/21 in Tyrone, GA
Now Available on IWTV.live
ACTION’s “Next Up” series continues, now a staple before ACTION’s monthly shows. This one was taped before ACTION’s September show “Acting Accordingly”, which I was at! Here’s my write up on THAT show!
In a Venn diagram of “training show”, “tryout show’ and “thanks for helping out”, this series aims right in the center of all these spaces, utilizing a lot of upcoming talent from AR Fox’s WWA4 wrestling school as well as other folks who were in the area to help out. In addition, representatives from IWTV, ACTION, TWE, SUP & SCI are there to watch, scout and give helpful feedback after each match (OBVIOUSLY, this part doesn’t make it to air but it was awesome to see in real time). Standouts from this show made their way into the ACTION Championship gauntlet later in the night on the main show.
Next Up’s matchmaker Bobby Flaco is out to intro us. Bobby gets his mic stolen almost immediately. Zach Moseley is mad he doesn’t have a match and wants into the main event. He jaws with Bobbby and takes a slap at the ref Rico Gonzalez and that fires Rico up to ask Bobby for Zach in the main. Bobby sends Zach to the back to wait for the main event….because Rico is getting his wish. Summer B is your announcer. Scott Hensley is at the commentary table. This show is presented without a crowd but with the wrestlers surrounding the ring to give some ambience to the action.
Match 1: Dante Darko vs Alonso Garcia vs Spectre vs Darian Bengston vs Billy Tipton vs Terri Yaki
Chaos at the bell and it spills right outside. Yaki and Bengston go through some quick sequences. Slingshot senton but Darko cuts him off with a series of arm drags. Garcia with a big lariat, backbreaker and facebuster for a near fall. The Good Sisters at ringside cheer Tipton into the match before Bengston comes in with the quickness to break up the crucifix pin. Bengston floats off the top rope, swinging neckbreaker to Tipton. Spectre with a moonsault to break up the pin. Slingshot senton hits Bengston but Garcia catches him with a facebuster for two. Tipton with a Code red! Darko hits a brain buster on Tipton before Bengston breaks it up. Yaki hits a Michanoku driver variation on Bengston before Spectre is back to powerbomb Yaki onto the knees for the pin. Good energy here.
Winner: Spectre
Match 2: Noah Hossman vs Cameron Saturn vs Derek James vs Morgan Taylor
Hossman is very pumped and aggressive tonight. He calls himself a king and his wrestling headgear is his crown. Fistfights break out early. Hossman and James eat stereo dropkicks and sent out to the floor. Taylor is throwing hands and jawing incessantly as beats down Cameron. Big running leg lariat. He distracts himself by being unable to shut his trap, allowing Saturn to fire back. James clears Saturn out with a gut buster and back drop. Big Hoss is in and angry. He smashes James with a headbutt and tosses James overhead. Big suplex, forcing Taylor to break it up. Taylor throws Hossman out and tries to steal the pin on James. Saturn cuts off James with a slingshot cutter off the top. Taylor pulled out of the ring by an angry Hossman. Hossman throwing his power around in the ring. Gutwrench powerbomb on James but Saturn breaks it up. Saturn dumps Hossman out and hits James with a frog splash off the top for the pin! Fun sprint of a 4-way!
Winner: Cameron Saturn
Again, I won’t share the content of the conversation here but I loooove that the people watching are giving critiques, notes and suggestions to the wrestlers between matches. It’s a very “it takes a village” vibe and is super cool to see.
Match 3: The Warden & Parker Lee vs The Good Sisters (Lizzie & Peyton Blair)
Parker face plants entering the ring and expresses surprise that “we’re wrestling girls?. “Are you GOOD?” Asks Lizzie as they circle. Parker tries to cartwheel out of danger with an unearned swagger….and he definitely can’t handle the sisters. Lizzie works over the wrist and shoulder. Peyton in, double suplex, kick out. Peyton with a pair of gutwrench takedowns. Lee stuns Peyton and hits a double stomp to the back before making the tag. Warden takes an accidental shot to the face from his partner and tags in to take control. Warden stretching out her neck and back. Neckbreaker on the ropes. Peyton with a jawbreaker but a big boot drops her for two. Bear hug from the Warden. Peyton DDT’s her way free. Lizzie gets the hot tag as Lee gets in. Pair of clotheslines and a German to Lee. Peyton with a ddt/lariat combo to her opponents. Lizzie off the top with a double stomp to the back of Parker over Payton’s knees. It was a slow setup but effective. Warden trips trying to make it in to make the save and falls flat on his face like Lee did earlier, allowing Lizzie to get the three count. The trip at the end was a good callback though I’m getting quite tired of the old “we have to fight girls? But girls can’t fight!” trope as a match narrative.
Winner: The Good Sisters
Match 4: TKO, The Renegade Enforcer & Skrilla the Great vs Pete Youngblood, Carson Dilbeck & Blak Jak Mak
No one wants any of the Renegade Enforcer. Enforcer tags to Skrilla but Youngblood charges and those dirty heels batter their opponents to the outside. Skrilla tries a dive but Youngblood cuts it off with a knee. Big DDT for two. Skrilla taking the heat from Youngblood. Skrilla manages to atomic drop Youngblood to the top buckle, wiping out his partners. TKO tags in and wipes out erryone but Dilbeck is able to cut off the pin attempt on Youngblood after a rock bottom variation. Dilbeck with chops and a back kick to the face for two. Facebuster and a knee to the back of the head for two. Renegade & Skrilla are pulled off the apron and TKO is stuck in no man’s land. Mak holding him back while Dilbeck does more damage. Back and forth punches with Dilbeck, TKO hits a Superman punch. Skrilla in with a sling blade but Youngblood breaks up the pin. Renegade with the tag after Skrilla weathers the storm of Mak. Renegade throwing clotheslines and catches Youngblood and Dilbeck in a fallaway slam before hurling Mak at them. Giant brain buster to Mack and that’s it. Fun match but I loved the dominant end sequence of Renegade Enforcer just murdering everyone.
Winners: TKO, The Renegade Enforcer & Skrilla the Great
Match 5: Kavron Kanyon vs Jack Kujo vs BK Westbrook
Westbrook mocking Kujo for his height and Kanyon for his hat. Kanyon tries to keep his hat on but that doesn’t last. He starts dominant against both but gets double dropkicked out. Westbrook jawing with the ref and taking cheap shots. Kujo dodges a corner charge and hits a superkick. Kanyon cuts off the pin. Kujo fends off an apron attack from Kanyon. Head scissor shotgun into the second on BK. Cool spot! BK with a TKO after catching Kujo’s double knee attempt and gets a near fall. Kanyon finally in to cut that off and trade knees and kicks with BK. Kanyon with a running cutter to Kujo! Big strikes in the center, Kanyon with a fallaway slam to both. Kick out by BK. Westbrook flips out of a package Powerbomb. Cutter to Kanyon and a springboard moonsault! Kujo breaks it up and hits a flurrry. Head kick, sole food, codebreaker off the second….BK kicks out! Air raid crash style neckbreaker to BK. Kujo tries the codebreaker again to Kanyon and eats a belly to belly and superkick. BK superkicks Kanyon out of the ring and hits a running sliced bread to Kujo for the pin. That was awesome.
Winner: BK Westbrook
Match 6: Ash Bennett vs Cody Morton vs Jeffery John vs Jay Lucas
Ash with a purple nurple to John and he gets tossed over the top. Double facebuster to John and he’s out of there too. Morton and Lucas go through some good sequences. Lucas off the ropes with a Flying basement clothesline. John swarms when it looks like Lucas has this won off a suplex. John stomps and hit a backbreaker on the shoulder. Ow. Triangle missile dropkick for two. Ash in to tell that shape of Italy joke again. As we know, it’s a boot (to Jeffery John’s face, most people miss that part). Ash with a German out of the corner to John. Morton in, creates a German suplex Tower of Doom, tossing Ash and John to the center. Lucas off the top with a elbow but John kicks out. Morton with a shoulderbreaker to the knee. Ash with a lawn dart and double knees. John hits a lariat and big slam to Ash. Lucas breaks up the pin, and plants Jeffery John with a ripcord ddt to close this out. Fun match!
Winner: Jay Lucas
Main Event: Zach Mosley vs Rico Gonzalez
Mosley is mad he has to fight a ref. Rico has a hero’s welcome for taking off his ref’s stripes for this contest. Mosley tries to get Rico to quit before the bell. He’s very defensive of his mullet and Rico catches him charging in rage. Mosley thinks this should be an easy squash but Rico is handling him soundly in these early minutes….and making sure to wreck that mullet. Rico throws Moseley off the top but Mosley hits a knee to the gut and catches a head scissor into a backbreaker. Mosley slamming and stomping the throat out. Rico trying to fight back. Mosley slingshots into a side russian leg sweep. Rico ain’t done, especially not with Mosely doing a one-foot pin. Rico almost steals it with a crucifix pin. Snap dragon from Mosley but he’s not going for the pin. He wants to TAUNT. Rico fighting back, gets popped up but comes down with a flying clothesline! Mosley dodges a charge into the corner and intros Rico to the second buckle. Knee to the back of the head, powerbomb, knee to the face. Rico’s out at two and Moseley is furious! Rico popped up again and Mosley eats a knee! Step up enziguri! Kick out! Rico springboards off the top but Mosley picks the leg and sinks in a single crab. Rico fights it and gets the rope! Rico swinging wild from his knees but Moseley dodging. Rico hit a bunch of knees and a suplex neckbreaker, Mosley pulls the pin because he wants to put a cherry on top and punish Rico more. He goes for the suplex again but Rico rolls him up and that’s the three! Greeeeeat energy here, liked this a lot and the finish was pretty much perfectly executed.
Winner: Rico Gonzalez
