DESTRUCTION BEGINS ON FORMER TNA ASYLUM IN NASHVILLE

By Mike Johnson on 2020-05-29 18:04:00

Destruction of the building known as The Nashville Fairground Arena aka the TNA Asylum, which housed professional wrestling events for decades and was the original home of TNA/Impact Wrestling when the promotion ran weekly Wednesday night PPVs, began today, PWInsider.com has learned.

Destruction on other parts of the fairgrounds began several months back.

An announcement was made back in 2009 that the Fairgrounds would be razed and moved to a new location in order to build a new Major League Soccer stadium on the existing grounds.  That has led to back and forth legal maneuverings that ended this past Friday when Davidson County Chancellor Ellen Hobbs declined to enforce a requested injunction, citing the $6,5000 per day costs being incurred by the construction company to hold demolition and project contractors and noting that she was being asked to protect older buildings that were not in use.

The Nashville Fairgrounds Sports Arena was built in 1972.  Impact used the venue as their home for weekly Wednesday PPVs from 2002 through 2004 and returned to the venue last year for their Homecoming PPV.  Reno Riggins' Showtime All-Star Wrestling used the venue for their 2009 weekly TV.  The NWA and House of Hardcore, among other promotions, also utilized the venue in recent years.

The new soccer stadium, slated to be titled the Nashville Fairgrounds Stadium, is expected to seat 27,500-30,000 fans.
