With Combat Zone Wrestling’s Sixth Annual Cage of Death event scheduled for Saturday 12/11 in Philadelphia, PA at the ECW Arena, PWInsider.com presents a look back at a number of articles and live reports covering CZW through it's up and downs over the years.
Combat Zone Wrestling's unique “Ultraviolent†style has garnered both attention and criticism since its first event in 1999, but the promotion is often historically overlooked as well. Many of the stars who are praised in other indy companies, including Ring of Honor, cut their teeth in CZW. The promotion was the first (and to this date) only company after the demise of Extreme Championship Wrestling to sell out the ECW Arena with a turnaway crowd in December 2001.
On the other side of the coin, the promotion has often been cut down by detractors for their use of blood, barbed wire, weed whackers, and other instruments of destruction. That has led to city council meetings against the company in Dover, Delaware, a more stringent governing of wrestling by the State of Pennsylvania, and the ending of a CZW event that featuring John Zandig pierced and hung from the ceiling of the ECW Arena that was so shocking that our own Dave Scherer decried that the company was, "No longer about wrestling."
