COMPLETE AEW FORBIDDEN DOOR RECAP

By Cory Strode on 2024-06-30 18:58:00

The Learning Tree (Chris Jericho, Big Bill, and Jeff Cobb) w/Bryan Keith vs. Samoa Joe, Hook, and Katsuyori Shibata

Jericho gets a “please Retire” chant and he says he’s from Long Island and a hometown hero and he knows people don't want him to retire.

Bill just dominates Shibata at the start of the match. Jericho tags in to get beat down by Shibata. When Hook tags in he just goes after Jericho relentlessly. Cobb tags in which causes Joe to tag in and the crowd chants for it.

REMINDER TO PEOPLE IN AEW, THE FANS WANT HOSS FIGHTS.

Joe goes after Cobb after Cobb verbally taunts him, and after Joe just beats him pillar to post, Cobb gets a takedown and Bill is tagged in. After Bill gets in some shots, Jericho tags in and lays in slaps, which Joe shrugs off, so Jericho tags out quickly to Cobb. When Joe tags in Hook, Hook gets a flurry of offense, but he quickly becomes the babyface in peril.

Shibata gets the hot tag and works with Cobb, and his team works over Cobb. Shibata takes a blow from Bill when he has Cobb in the jugi gitame. After JKericho teams takes out Joe’s team on the apron, Jericho gets a low blow as Keith distracts the ref. From here the tag team siren goes off and all six men are fighting in and around the ring. Hook locks the redrum on Jericho, Shibata locks a choke on Bill and Joe hooks one on Cobb.

Jericho gets a small package, but Hook escapes and gets a T bone suplex, followed by the Judas effect on Jericho for the pin and the win.

Winners:  Samoa Joe, Hook, and Katsuyori Shibata

Ladder Match for vacant TNT Championship: Jack Perry vs. Konosuke Takeshita vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Dante Martin vs. Lio Rush vs. El Phantasmo

Here’s your car crash match.  And for those who haven’t read me write about El Phantasmo before, his nickname is ELP, so I will use that for his name, even if he doesn’t come to the ring to “Lucky Man.”

Perry gets out of the ring to start. Everyone surrounds him and Takeshita takes him out with a brutal blow. The rest swarm Takeshita and he gets tossed. The four left grab chairs, bring them into the ring and then toss them at each other and they all out brawl begins. As they brawl, Perry brings in a ladder to go for the belt, stopped by Rush, it's back to brawls.

In the ring, ELP hits a F5 on Rush onto a ladder in the corner. Dante goes up the ladder, and Takeshita tries to dump him, but Dante turns it into a cross body on ELP. Briscoe gets the ladder around the head attacks on people. Briscoe then uses a chair in the ring as a launching pad to land on Takeshita through a table with a ladder on top of him.

Perry goes to set up a ladder again and Rush stops him again. Perry uses a ladder to take out Rush and then sets up a ladder bridge from the corner to a ladder. ELP runs the bridge to stop Perry and we get fights on the ladder. Perry dumps Dante and ELP to the mat. Perry is left as the only man on his feet and he sets up a table. The brawling starts again, all outside the ring.

Briscoe comes off a ladder on the ring apron onto Perry on the table, but Briscoe only hits the edge of the table. Dante realizes he’s the last man standing, but Rush is up as well. Dante and Rush fight on the ladder, but Takeshita is able to stop them with power bombs, with Rush getting power bombed on a ladder in the corner. ELP and Takeshita stop each other from grabbing the title.

Takeshita hits a blue thunder bomb on ELP through tables at ringside and the crowd explodes. Briscoe stops Takeshita from grabbing the title. Briscoe drops Takeshita into a ladder with a Jay Driller. Perry knocks Briscoe down with a ladder and then keeps beating Briscoe with a chair. Perry is able to grab the title.

Winner and new TNT Champion: Jack Perry

TBS Championship & NJPW Strong Women's Championship Winner Take All: Mercedes Moné (TBS Champion) vs. Stephanie Vaquer (NJPW Champion)

The match starts with each woman showing their agility, but Vaquer gets a multi-rope jump for her attack and Mone gets a rope driven hold of her own. Mone goes for a baseball slide, but comes off a bit tentative before she does so and turns it into a tejaris. They move to brawling at ringside. Vaquer takes over the match and gets a series of moves and holds on Mone.

Mone tries for the three amigos, and Vaquer stops her on the third and wraps Mone into a submission hold that I haven’t seen before. A knee bar with her head trapped by another leg. As Vaquer is dominating, the crowd is moving to her side. Mone is able to get a drop kick into Vaquer when Vaquer tries to crossbody from the top.

From here, Mone starts getting moves of her own as she and Vaquer trade two counts. Mone keeps trying for the Mone Maker, but Vaquer blocks it. They trade forearms in the middle of the ring and Vaquer is able to get a crossface. Mone rolls it into a one count. Mone gets a crossface of her own. When Vaquer is able to reverse out of it, the crowd cheers loudly for her.

Any time Mone gets an advantage, the crowd is all over her. The announcers say it is because New York doesn’t like Boston. The crowd doesn’t start chanting Boston Red Sox.

Mone gets another crossface to a series of boos. They have a series of reversals, Mone gets the Mone Maker and Vaquer has to tap out.

Winner, TBS champion and New NJPW Strong Womens’ champion: Mercedes Mone

After this match, it’s time to have Mone turn heel.

As soon as I type that, Britt Baker’s music hits and she’s back. She stands on the stage, gets a huge pop and then goes to the back.

We then get a video for a new event: 1/5/2025 - Wrestle Dynasty in the Tokyo Dome

Jon Moxley (IWGP World Heavyweight Champion) vs Tetsuya Naito

Jim Ross joins commentary. Red Shoes is our referee.

The introductions give this a big match feel.

They start by throwing hands. Naito is knocked into the corner, but he spits in Mox’s face. He then bails out of the ring to raise Mox’s anger. Naito brings a chair into the ring and sits down and Mox does as well, and the ref takes out both of the ring as they fight corner to corner. The fight spills out of the ring and onto the Spanish Announce table. As Mox is in the ring waiting for Naito, Naito tells him Tranquilo. Naito gets in the ring and starts brawling and spits again.

Mox locks on a cross face and Naito gets to the ropes. Mox then gets a stalling pile driver for two. The match becomes one where Mox is getting the big moves and Naito is withstanding them, waiting for an opportunity. Naito knocks Mox front he top and Mox has injured his knee. Naito spears Mox into the announce table and JR says to be careful, he just got out of the hospital.

“Tranquilo my ass!” Jim Ross

Naito then moves Mox into the ring and methodically works over Mox. Mox is able to get a big move here and there, but we have moved into the battle of attrition, as Mike Johnson says. Mox loses his temper after a two count, yells at the ref and brings a chair in the ring. The ref gets rid of the chair and Mox is furious with him. Naito turns a suplex into Destino and then lays in back elbows. Naito gets a brain buster and Destino for the pin and they win.,

Winner and NEW IWGP Champion: Tetsuya Naito

Taz says that Mox should have won with the slow count, so I would imagine we’ll see this again.

This was a New Japan style Big Match, with both men fighting to the brink of exhaustion and someone winning with a big final move.

It’s time for the Main event:

Swerve Strickland (AEW World Champion) vs Will Ospreay (AEW International Champion)

They start by locking up and as Swerve forces them to the ropes the pace goes to 100 MPH. They each land on their feet after a tejaris, and stop to reset. They go back and forth and then move to the floor to brawl. Swerve moves the match to more methodical and hitting a big move and then setting for the next one. Swerve is mostly known for his high speed/high flying work, but his transition to this style has made his matches better as he’s ascended to main event status.

“Ospreay’s not quick, he’s sudden” - Jim Ross.

Ospreay gets a handspring kick to cut off Swerve and they move to fighting on the floor and then on top of the barricade. Ospreay gets a hurricanrana on the barricade, whips him into the ring for two. They then move to hitting big moves on each other with Ospreay usually recovering first.

Ospreay then goes on a tear, hitting a series of big moves followed by a two count.  Ospreay goes for the Oz Cutter and Swerve stops it with a Swerve Stomp. We then see that Daniel Garcia is watching the match from the stands. They go back to big moves and slow recoveries. As Ospreay is on the floor, Swerve hits a Swerve Stomp into Ospreay into the announcer’s desk.

JR sells these moves better than anyone else in the business.

Swerve hits a pile driver on top of the barricade and follows with a reverse slam for two. Swerve goes to the top for the stomp, but Ospreay goes into the ropes to knock Swerve off the top. Opsreay gets an Oz Cutter from the top and follows with Oz Cutter off the second rope for two. He then hits the hidden blade, but Swerve blocks it. Swerve grabs him when he tries for an Oz Cutter and goes to snap the arm, but Ospreay escapes and hits another Oz Cutter.

Ospreay hits a stormbreaker for two. MJF is watching in the back. They are building the crowd up for the match ending. They trade big finishers and the crowd is drowning out the announcers. We get a ref bump with Ospreay accidentally taking out the ref with a hidden blade. Don CXallis shows and tries to hand Ospreay the screwdriver. Nana shoves Callis down, and Ospreay goes after Nana with the screwdriver, but takes his hands off him and drops the screwdriver.

Ospreay is whipped into the ring, Swerve gets the stomp and a ref comes from the back to count two. Swerve gets two counts and Ospreay is out on his feet. Swerve hits a house call and follows with the JML Driver for the pin and the win.

Winner and still AEW World Champion: Swerve Strickland

Kyle Fletcher coimes to the ring to console Ospreay as Swerve celebrates with the crowd.
