Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho vs. The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson)
If The Bucks win, Omega and Jericho split as a team. If The Bucks lose, Omega and Jericho gain their AEW Tag Team title shot
It would have to suck to follow that match.
Don Callis joins commentary.
We start with Matt and Jericho who start with headlocks, arm bars and other chain wrestling. Jericho gets Matt in the corner with chops, and Omega tags himself in to stop him. Omega and the Bucks work their moves with the Bucks pulling out some heel moves. Callus says he likes how the Bucks are working, which makes sense. Jericho tags in and he gets to be the babyface in peril as the Bucks work him over with quick tags. Before then get into the ring, they do a bit where they use the steel steps on his arm, and Jericho is bested open.
The Bucks spend a lot of time working over the arm Jericho uses for the Judas effect, and as the Bucks work, the crowd boos them. In California.
Jericho is able to get a drop kick and tags in Omega. Nick Jackson holds out a hand for a handshake and Omega just runs wild. Omega tags in Jericho after a V Trigger and hits a lionsault on both of the Bucks. The Bucks are able to stop him by attacking his arm again. Matt tries for the Walls of Jericho, and Jericho is able to get a small package for two. Jericho is abel to get the Walls after he and Omega run into each other.
Nick goes to break it up, but Omega pulls him off the apron. Jericho’s arm starts to give out, and Matt rolls under and kicks free. Jericho keeps fighting and after getting a hurrancanrana off the top, Matt hits a low blow kick on Jericho when they ref isn’t watching, and then Matt hits one on Omega as well.
The Bucks start the high flying stuff and they set up Jericho for the BTE trigger for two. The Bucks set up for the Meltzer driver and Omega grabs Nicks’ foot. After a near fall, Jericho gets a low blow in and Omega is tagged in. Omega calls to attack Jericho but nails the Bucks instead. Matt hits a one winged angel on Omega for two. Omega then hits a codebreaks on Nick to stop a Meltzer Driver on Omega.
I really like how this match is building. The Bucks are selling for Omega and Jericho. I also like Nick Jackson being a bit conflicted about turning heel, but Matt has gone full jerk.
Omega gets the one winged angel on Matt for the pin and the win.
Winners and now having a Title Match: Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega
Adam Cole vs Jay White w/The Gunns for the AEW World Championship
Cole comes to the ring on crutches and in street clothes.
Jay mocks Cole by hopping on one foot or laying on the mat.
We then see the Ambulance show up in the back with MJF driving. He hobbles to the ring. ...
MJF (AEW World Champion) vs Jay White
Staff and security try to stop him and he ignores them as Cole is leaping with joy. Literally.
MJF nails Jay with a slap and then goes down and can’t put any weight on the leg. So, it’s gonna be Jay just beating MJF down for the start of the match. The story of the match then becomes Bullet Club attacking as much as they can and MJF getting some meager offense until the ref sees the Gunns with a chair.
And they are outta here!
Even with them gone, Jay taunts Cole when he’s not attacking MJF. MJF powers up as Jay attacks, and then HE has to put money in the swear jar before Jay takes him down. MJF calls for the Kangaroo kick, and after he hits it, he fires up. Jay is able to get back in the ring and take over again.
It’s amazing to me that they have used this well worn story and the crowd has completely bought into it. While I would have rather seen just a solid match between Jay and MJF, they have pumped this crowd up for this.
MJF tries to set Jay on the announcer’s table and it collapses as soon as Jay is on it. MJF doesn’t care and goes to the top anyway. MJF hits an elbow from the top to the announce table shambles. The ref starts the count and MJF tosses Jay in the ring at 8. MJF is also swearing a LOT when he talks to the ref.
Jay gets a dragon screw on MJF in the ropes. MJF is tied in the tree of woe, but when Jay is on top working on the leg, MJF reaches up and slams Jay on the mat. We then move into the Big Finishing moves and near falls, and the crowd is into each one.
They take a lot of time between moves, selling how exhausted they each are, and thai feels a lot like a New Japan match in a good way. After MJF tells the doctor to go away, Jay hits a pair of dragon screws and locks in the figure four. We see Cole has a towel to throw in. MJF is able to pulls them back to the ropes, but Jay pulls them back into the middle of the ring. MJF is finally able to turn it over and Jay finally gets to the ropes.
Cole has the beLt and thinks of hitting Jay, but Jay grabs the belt and nails MJF with it for…
Two.
Then we get a ref bump.
MJF gets a huge smile on his face, and Cole puts the Dynamite Diamond on the mat, and Jay stops him from getting it. Jay then puts the ring on and sets up to nail MJF. When Jay swings with the diamond, MJF hits a HUGE low blow. He grabs the ring and nails the Gunns, who have run to the ring with the ref out. MJF nails Jay with the ring and hides the ring and covers Jay for the pin and the win.
Winner and still AEW World Champion: MJF
You can say it was ridiculously overbooked, but it worked for the crowd, and it seemed like an old school Baby Face win from the 80’s with MJF getting to use his old tactics as well. Also, with the match the way it was, Jay White still feels like a major threat.
