3/18/23 Results from the New Japan Cup 2023 from Hamamatsu, Japan:
1 - Ryohei Oiwa and Oskar Leube vs. Kosei Fujita and Zack Sabre Jr.
Fujita pins Oiwa with an OConner Roll
2 - Kyle Fletcher and Aaron Henare vs. Tomoaki Honma and YOSHI-HASHI
Henare forces Honma to tap out with Ultima.
3 - El Phantasmo, Chase Owens and KENTA vs. Ren Narita, El Desperado and Minoru Suzuki
Wild start as KENTA attacks Suzuki. Suzuki and KENTA beat each other up on the floor as a regular tag match took place in the ring. KENTA pulled out chairs and kicked the referee. Suzuki and KENTA battle with chairs.
Referee calls for a disqualification on KENTA.
KENTA beats down Suzuki and poses with the New Japan Strong Openweight Belt and stepping on Suzuki’s head. Bullet Club leaves the ring and Suzuki snaps. He grabs a chair and hits referee with the chair. Suzuki beats up all young lions in his path and chases Bullet Club. KENTA sees him coming and smashes Suzuki in the face with the belt. KENTA beats down Suzuki, while Owens and ELP take out Narita and Desperado. Suzuki grabs a guardrail and chases them. There is a loud metal crash behind the curtain which got a reaction from the crowd.
4 - Great O-Khan, Jeff Cobb and Mark Davis vs. Dick Togo, Yujiro Takahashi and EVIL
O-Khan trapped Togo in a Sheep Killer for a submission win.
5 - Toru Yano, Tomohiro Ishii, YOH and Lio Rush vs. BUSHI, Hiromu Takahashi, Shingo Takagi and Tetsuya Naito
Ishii pins BUSHI after a brainbuster.
New Japan Cup 2023 Matches:
6 - Quarterfinals: David Finlay vs. Shota Umino
Finlay takes the fight quickly to the floor and beats him against the guardrails. Finlay‘s style is alot of brawling, lots of kicking and striking. Umino fights back with a dropkick and a slingshot DDT. Finlay with an Irish Curse. Two count. Finlay hammers him with elbows and forearms. Umino hits an exploder. They trade strikes. Umino hits a Cross Rhodes twice and a Bloody Sunday. Two count. Finlay with a lariat and a spear. Finlay hits a Dominator. Two count. Umino with a small package. Two count. Umino with a swinging neck breaker. Two count. Umino with a tornado DDT and an cradle DDT. Two count.
They trade reversals. Finlay hits Trash Panda.
Finlay pins Umino.
David Finlay moves into the Semifinals.
7 - Quarterfinals: Hirooki Goto vs. Tama Tonga
Both were evenly matched until Goto went to the apron and Tama hit a modified Gun Stun, dropping Goto throat first over the top rope. Tama hit a drop kick and wore down Goto with head lock. Goto fought back and hit a plancha on Tama. They fought to the top rope and Tama hit a Superplex. Tama with a Stinger splash. They exchange strikes. Goto hits an ushigaroshi. Tama counters with an SRC and a Supreme Flow. They bounce off the ropes looking for a big move. Tama hits Villano. Two count.
Tama goes for a Gun Stun and Goto reverses and hits a Solo Shoto. Tama with a Bloody Sunday. Two count. Goto goes for a GTR. Tama blocks it and hits a headbutt. Tama connects with a Gun Stun.
Tama pins Goto.
Tama Tonga will face David Finlay in the semifinals.
Both men embrace after the match.
