COMPLETE NWA CROCKETT CUP 2022 NIGHT ONE PPV COVERAGE

By Anthony Pires on 2022-03-19 20:00:00

Crockett Cup First Round - The Ill Begotten (Alex Taylor & Rush Freeman) w/Danny Deals and Jeremiah Plunkett -13th seed vs. Doug Williams & Harry Smith-4th seed

Deals escorts Capt. Yuma to the back, who clearly wanted to represent the Ill Begotten.  On the extremely long list of folks I don't want to take a chop from, Williams is high on that list.  Gawd Harry Smith is big.  How this guy isn't a huge name nationally is beyond me.  I can see Williams and Smith going far in this tournament, but with the way the upsets have been occurring, who knows what the heck is happening.  For a guy the size of Smith, he moves like an eagle.  The Commonwealth Connection with a Rocket Launcher Headbutt and they score a relatively easy win.

WINNERS: DOUG WILLIAMS & HARRY SMITH

Crockett Cup First Round: La Rebellion (Bestia 666 & Mecha Wolf) 1 seed vs. The Tate Twins

Hopefully the Boyz can go BREAK SOME HEARTS! First appearance for the NWA World Tag Team Champions Stateside in a while.  La Rebellion come out looking like stars. I wish they could be featured a little more but I understand they have commitments elsewhere.  Interesting to note that La Rebellion are out with both the 1984 and 1988 versions of the NWA Tag Team Championship belts, presumably on loan from David Crockett and Conrad Thompson. I'd imagine that if La Rebellion do not win this tournament, the team that beats them and or wins the Cup would be the automatic #1 contenders.

The Tates have come a long way since their time as Boys.  So far this match is exactly what it should be.  Think of those AEW matches between a genuine star and a hot up and comer.  We pretty much know what the end game is going to be (bit with the way this tournament has played out so far, who the heck knows?) but the upstart makes for a really good showing.

One of the Tates slipped off the top on a springboard attempt and landed hard on his wrist.  Luckily he's OK.  The Tates hit Space Jam for a close 2 as Bestia makes the save.  La Rebellion hits The Mark of the Beast for the pin.  Nice showing for the upstart Tate Twins.

WINNERS: LA REBELLION

That concludes Round 1 of the Crockett Cup.

The Quarterfinals are as follows:

*The Fixers vs. The Cardonas

*La Rebellion vs. Hawx Aerie

*Gold Rushhh vs. Doug Williams & Harry Smith

*The Briscoes vs. Dirty Sexy Boys

May Valentine gets some words from VSK and Mike Knox.

Quarterfinal Match:The Fixers (Jay Bradley & Wrecking Ball Legursky) -14 seed vs. The Cardonas (VSK & Mike Knox) -11 seed

We've got an interesting one here as The Fixers have been a force as of late in the NWA.  They got a nice W to get here against the OGK and they have a nice ass kicker/comedy good ol' boys thing going for them.  Legursky, especially, has charisma for days.  If the need ever arises to immediately the NWA belts off of La Rebellion due to maybe their inability to make it here due to other commitments, The Fixers would be a nice option because they're believable, maybe not as much as a team like Odinson and Parrow, but the seeds for their breakup have clearly been planted.

You have to respect Knox for being a survivor.  The WWECW launch was 16 years ago (feel old?) and Knox was an original building block of that brand.  16 years later, he's still here plugging way.  Legursky misses a Vader bomb.  Knox with a sister Abigail and VSK nails a frog splash for the pin.

WINNERS: MIKE KNOX AND VSK

Quarterfinal Match: The Briscoes -2 seed vs. The Dirty Sexy Boys -10 seed

Briscoes are coming into this one with more "seriousness" in their eyes than they did in Round 1.  It's been a night of upsets here and the Briscoes have a huge ROH tag title defense agsinst FTR in 3 weeks. Another win here would be a big momentum boost for them, especially coming off a non title loss to SAT last weekend for BTW.  Velvet Sky still loves her some Dirty Dango.

I like how the NWA isn't afraid to feature reclamation projects like JTG and Dango, who was booked into oblivion by WWE. The DSBs have some real chemistry and the Briscoes are tag team masters. Dango hits an Air Raid Crash/DDT combo on the Briscoes.  Dango saves JTG from a pin attempt after Redneck Boogie.  Regardless, Jay hits the Jay Driller and Mark puts it away with a Froggy Bow on JTG.

WINNERS: THE BRISCOES

As Gorilla Monsoon liked to say, now we're getting down to the nitty gritty.

Very nice showing by the Dirty Sexy Boys in defeat.

Tyrus and BLK Jeez are in the back.  Jeez brags about the Gold Rushhh win earlier tonight. Tyrus is completely focused on Gold Rushhh in the quarterfinals.  He expects the win and tells Jeez to get them ready.  Tyrus is confident about his chances in tomorrow night's match against Rodney Mack.

The Legendary David Crockett has replaced Velvet Sky at the commentary booth

Quarterfinal Match: Hawx Aerie (PJ Hawx) -9 seed vs. La Rebellion- 1 seed

PJ is out there alone. As I know my nephew, also named PJ is reading this, I hope he knows I wish it was him in there with La Rebellion (just kidding buddy).  I really sincerely hope we get wild and uncontrolled David Crockett on the booth.  Gotta give PJ credit here.  He's taking right to the top seed and World Champions.  He's putting up a heck of an effort here and, VERY importantly, doesn't look out of place in the spot he's in.  Hawx is getting in some real quick bursts of offense here but the champs keep successfully thwarting him.  Clearly he's going to run out of gas.  I write just as the champs hit Mark of the Beast.  PJ KICKS OUT.  They hit another and this time, PJ Hawx is fresh out of miracles, 1-2-3.

WINNERS: LA REBELLION

Nashville gives PJ Hawx a lot of love.

MAN what I wouldn't have given for FITE TV in 1987.

Quarterfinal Match: Doug Williams & Harry Smith -4 seed vs. Gold Rushhh w BLK Jeez -12 seed

NWA President William Corgan has decreed that Tyrus will not be allowed at ringside but had a few words for Gold Rushhh, telling him he expects excellence.  The Commonwealth Connection are setting a very slow pace here to kick things off. These guys are bruisers, to say the least.  Smith nails a beautiful snap suplex (wonder where he learned that from).

The NWA did a great job in booking this tonight: I THINK The Commonwealth Connection are taking this but it's been an underdog kind of night.  Clearwater is showing the kind of promise we saw when he was the UWN TV champion.  Rockett and Clearwater really came into their own as a team here tonight.  Win or lose, this hopefully gives them a clearer focus headed into the Powerrr tapings Monday and Tuesday.

BTW cheap plug here, you can order this excellent show and ALL NWA PPVs for the price of $49.99 on FITE TV.  Hey, you're reading this, which means you're a wrestling fan.  Give a great company your support.

They're building to a very nice crescendo here as the action picks up the pace. Smith and Williams hit a powerbomb/piledriver combo on Clearwater for 2, save by Rockett.  Williams with a rollover hammerlock and Clearwater and Clearwater has to tap.  THAT looked painful.

WINNERS: DOUG WILLIAMS & HARRY SMITH

Kyle Davis is at the desk with La Rebellion, who vow to be Crockett Cup champions.  They give some respect to PJ Hawx and vow to drink tequila out of the Cup.

William Patrick Corgan has joined Joe Galli at the desk.  They discuss the evening's events.  Mr. Corgan thanks David Crockett for being here tonight and pays homage to the Crockett family and preview night two.

This was one heck of a fun night 1 of the Crockett Cup.  Come back here tomorrow for Night 2 action.

Coming up on Night 2:

NWA World Champion Matt Cardona vs. Nick Aldis

NWA World Women's Champion Kamille vs. Kylie Rae vs. Chelsea Green

NWA TV Champion Tyrus vs. Rodney Mack

NWA Jr. Heavyweight Championship: Homicide vs. Colby Corino vs. Austin Aires vs. Darius Lockheart

National Championship: Anthony Mayweather vs. Jax Dane

NWA Women's Tag Team Champions The Hex vs. Ella Envy & Kenzie Page

The Semi Finals & Finals of the Crockett Cup Tournament featuring The Briscoes (2), La Rebellion (1), The Cardonas (11) & Doug Williams & Harry Smith (4)
