Survivor: Andre the Giant

Following the match, Hulk Hogan returned to the ring and attacked Andre with the WWF Championship belt, sending the big man running. Hogan posed in the ring to close the show.

CARD SUBJECT TO CHANGE: "Superstar" Billy Graham was originally scheduled to compete at the pay-per-view as a member of Hulk Hogan’s team, but the WWF ran an angle where Graham was attacked and injured by Survivor Series opponents Butch Reed and the One Man Gang leading up to the event. He was replaced on the team by Don Muraco.

NOTES: Gorilla Monsoon & Jesse "The Body" Ventura did commentary for the event. "Mean" Gene Okerlund & Greg DeGeorge handled interviews. Howard Finkel was the ring announcer....The pay-per-view television concept was still relatively new at the time of the first Survivor Series, and the WWF took advantage of that fact by deliberately scheduling the inaugural event on the same day and at the same time as the annual NWA Starrcade pay-per-view. Though the number of cable providers with pay-per-view capabilities was growing, few, if any, were able to carry more than one live event at the same time. The WWF lobbied cable providers to air Survivor Series instead of Starrcade, informing the cable companies that if they didn't carry the untested Survivor Series event they wouldn't be allowed to carry the next Wrestlemania pay-per-view, a proven money-making commodity. Not surprisingly, NWA Starrcade was available in very few homes....The pay-per-view was eventually made available for video rental through Coliseum Home Video, though the show was edited to two hours. The first three matches were clipped on the release, and the main event was included in its entirety.

Buck Woodward: This was actually the first Pay-per-view event I ever saw. PPV was brand new, so much so that I actually went next door to my neighbor's house to watch it, since he had the "new box" and my cable box wasn't able to receive PPV. ... I remember thinking how ridiculously crowded the ring looked during the Tag Team Survivor match, and also being tremendously impressed with Bam Bam Bigelow's performance at the end of the main event. ... One thing I didn't like about the show was Ricky Steamboat being on friendly terms with two of his fiercest rivals, Jake Roberts and Randy Savage. I kept thinking "This is nuts, they're supposed to hate each other" while watching them celebrate at the end of their bout.

Mike Johnson: I can distinctly remember this PPV as the apartment building my family lived in at the time was wired for cable just three days before the PPV, so it was a major deal to watch the show live as it happened. The shocking thing was that a heel went over in the main event, as they were building to the second Hogan vs. Andre singles match...I remember being blown away by the idea of Steamboat, Roberts, and Savage all on the same side....The Jumping Bomb Angels gave a generation of fans who had no clue about the International scope of wrestling a taste of what they could discover later in life....The actual best match on the show was the tag team elimination bout, which was pretty amazing to see so many guys in the ring....Something that would never happen today took place on that PPV – a 15 minute intermission, complete with countdown graphic.
