1971 - Antonio Inoki is fired from the Japan Wrestling Association because of an apparent plan to attempt to take over the promotion. Inoki's NWA United National Heavyweight Title was vacated as a result. The following year, Inoki would found New Japan Pro Wrestling. Giant Baba would also leave and form All Japan Pro Wrestling the same year, and the JWA closed in 1973.
1972 - Bob Kelly defeats The Spoiler to win his fourth City of Mobile Heavyweight Title in Mobile, Alabama.
1973 - Duke Miller defeats Ken Lucas for the NWA Mississippi Heavyweight Title in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, ending Lucas' fourth reign.

1986 - Rip Oliver defeats The Assassin in Portland, Oregon for the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Title, beginning his 10th reign.
1986 - During a tag team match with British Bulldog partner Davey Boy Smith against Don Muraco & Cowboy Bob Orton, the legendary Dynamite Kid suffers a severe back injury in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Dynamite went down on the floor after being kneed in the back by Muraco and hit several times with a chair. Dynamite was rushed into a hospital for surgery to repair two torn lumbar discs. At first it was feared that his career was over, but he did manage to return to the ring a short time later. Dynamite later wrote in his autobiography that it was years of a high impact style, not this specific match, that caused the injury. The severe nerve damage to his back resulted in him never being the same in the ring, and while he would wrestle for another five years (and have a good run in All Japan Pro Wrestling), the glory era of the Dynamite Kid was over.
1987 - Miguel Perez, Jr. defeated Kareem Mohammed to win the WWC Puerto Rico Heavyweight Title in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
1988 - The AWA held their one, and only, Pay-per-view event, Superclash III, in conjunction with World Class Championship Wrestling and Memphis' CWA. The event, held in Chicago, Illinois at the UIC Pavilion, drawing less than 2,000 fans for the 12-match card. The card it notable for several stories and incidents, which will be covered in the results of the show. The show was not a success financially, with only 1,672 fans attending the show. Not long after SuperClash III, Jerry Jarrett and Jerry Lawler bought World Class and merged it with the CWA to create the United States Wrestling Association.
The show results were:
- Hector, Chavo & Mando Guerrero defeated Cactus Jack & The Rock N' Roll RPMs (Mike David & Tommy Lane) when Chavo pinned Lane. This was the Pay-per-view debut of Cactus Jack. 15 years after this match, Chavo Guerrero confronted Verne Gagne (who promoted the show) at a wrestling convention over the fact that Verne has never paid him (and others) for appearing on the show.
- Eric Embry defeated Jeff Jarrett to win the World Class Light Heavyweight Title for the fourth time.
- Jimmy Valiant defeated Wayne Bloom in less than thirty seconds.
- World Class Texas Champion Iceman King Parsons defeated Brickhouse Brown.
- Paul Diamond, Pat Tanaka & Madusa Micelli (managed by Diamond Dallas Page) defeated Ricky Rice, Derrick Dukes & Wendi Richter.
- Greg Gagne defeated Ronnie Garvin via countout to win the AWA International Television Title. Garvin had actually beaten Gagne and was the defending champion going into this match, but he had signed a contract with the WWF and refused to job clean to Gagne before leaving. So, the AWA made up a story about the title being held up due to controversy over Garvin's championship win. As a result, this match was for a vacant title, and Gagne could win the belt on a countout.
- The Terrorist won a Street Fight Lingerie Battle Royal. Notables in the battle royal include Luna Vachon and Tina Ferrari (better known as Ivory in WWE).
- Sgt. Slaughter defeated Col. DeBeers in a Boot Camp match. Following the match, The Iron Sheik attacked Slaughter.
- World Class Tag Team champions The Samoan Swat Team (Samu & Fatu), managed by Buddy Roberts, defeated Michael Hayes & Steve Cox.
- Wahoo McDaniel defeated Manny Fernandez in an Indian Strap match.
- AWA World Champion Jerry Lawler defeated World Class Champion Kerry Von Erich to unify the titles. Lawler was later given a third belt by the USWA proclaiming him the "Unified World Champion". Before the match, Von Erich absentmindedly cut himself with a blade backstage, slicing open his bicep. As a result, Lawler grabbed Von Erich's arm at the start of the match and rammed it into the ringpost in an attempt to explain why Von Erich was bleeding. The match ended when the referee stopped the bout due to Von Erich's excessive bleeding from the head, despite the fact that Von Erich had Lawler in the claw and was in control of the match at the time.
The titles would be defended as the Unified championship until Lawler had a falling out with the AWA over money issues, which led to him being stripped of the title. Lawler would continue to defend the Unified title in Memphis.
Also interesting to note that match almost didn't take place, as WWF reportedly went to the Illinois State Athletic Commission and pointed out an ancient statute that stated that amputees could not compete in championship matches as a way of messing with the show. WWF claimed Von Erich was an amputee (at the time, it was not common knowledge that Von Erich was missing a foot following a motorcycle wreck) and that the match should be canceled. However, the Commission said it wouldn't begin it's investigation until December 14th (after the PPV), so WWF dropped their request. WWE would go on to hire Von Erich just a few years later.
- The Rock N' Roll Express vs. Jimmy Golden & Robert Fuller ended in a double countout.
1988 - Stan Hansen & Terry Gordy defeat Genichiro Tenryu & Toshiaki Kawada in the finals of All Japan's Real World Tag League to win the vacant All Japan World Tag Team Title.
1989 - The Colossal Connection (Andre the Giant and Haku) defeat Demolition (Ax and Smash) for the WWF Tag Team Title in Huntsville, Alabama, ending Demolition's second reign. This would be Andre's last championship reign in wrestling.
1989 - The NWA held the seventh annual Starrcade at The Omni in Atlanta, Georgia. In a surprising move, the decision was made to throw out the usual "supercard" format, and instead go with a pair of round robin tournaments, calling the show "Future Shock: Night Of The Iron Men". All of the matches had a 15 minute time limit, with no titles on the line. Here are the results:
- In the Iron Team tournament: Rick & Scott Steiner defeated Doom via countout.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Lex Luger defeated Sting.
- In the Iron Team tournament: The Road Warriors defeated Doom.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Ric Flair defeated The Great Muta in less than two minutes. This was Muta's first pinfall loss in the NWA. By the end of the night, he would have suffered two more losses.
- In the Iron Team tournament: Rick & Scott Steiner defeated The Road Warriors.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Sting defeated The Great Muta.
- In the Iron Team tournament: The Samoan Swat Team defeated Doom.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Lex Luger vs. Ric Flair ended in a draw.
- In the Iron Team tournament: The Samoan Swat Team defeated Rick & Scott Steiner via disqualification.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Lex Luger defeated The Great Muta via disqualification.
- In the Iron Team tournament: The Road Warriors defeated The Samoan Swat Team.
- In the Iron Man tournament: Sting defeated Ric Flair. This was Flair's first clean loss at a Starrcade event.

2003 - CZW held their annual Cage of Death. Mike Johnson filed the following live report:
Combat Zone Wrestling presented their Fifth Annual Cage of Death event on Saturday 12/13 at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, PA. The show, which drew in the 900+ range, featured the spectacle of a double ring Cage of Death match featuring a suspended cage above the ring for the workers to battle on, as well as the surprise return of former ECW star New Jack to the ECW Arena, and a number of workers break out for the company with their performances tonight. Complete results of the show saw:
*John Dahmer and Cory Kastle won a Three-Way Dance, defeating Jude and Niles Young and the team of DJ Hyde and Josh Samuels (Lit from Ring of Honor) When Dahmer destroyed Samuels with a top rope piledriver. The crowd was on fire for the show, as seen by the huge reaction Dahmer’s finisher got.
*Shun the Kabuki Kid defeated Rick Feinberg, Christian Wolf, and GQ when Shun hit a top rope senton bomb on Wolf to score the pin. Kabuki looked good with his Japanese mannerisms and kicks. John Dahmer attacked and laid out Feinberg after the match.
*The Rockin’ Rebel and Greg Matthews defeated the Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz and the team of Z-Barr and Nick Berk in a Three-Way Dance when Rebel pinned DRS’ EC Negro. Barr and Berk are coming into their own as a babyface team, showing a lot of fire here.
*Jimmy Jacobs defeated Sabian and Derek Frazier in a Three-Way Dance. Becky Bayless, who has managed Jacobs on several IWA Mid-South events, managed him here in her CZW debut. A good match with solid work all around. The crowd was having a good time chanting “Huss.” Sabian got a nice round of applause after the bout.
*Jimmy Rave pinned Trent Acid to win the CZW Iron Man championship in a good bout. They initially went to a 20-minute draw with Rave demanding the match be continued. Acid teased he would do it, then walked out and returned to the locker room. Referee Brian Logan began counting out Acid, who returned through the front door of the building and rolled up Rave from behind for a near fall. They went back and forth with a series of two counts, with Rave finally scoring the pin to a huge reaction.
The HI-V came out and consoled Acid. They did an interview to set up the main event with CZW champion John Zandig coming out and walking down the “suspended cage” to look down on HI-V and announced that his team had a mystery sixth competitor that would shock CZW.
*Alex Shelley defeated B-Boy and Chris Hero in an excellent match to become the top contender for the CZW Iron Man championship. B-Boy pinned Hero with a shining wizard to eliminate him. Shelley forced B-Boy to submit to an STF in the center of the ring. A tremendous match.
*The Joker pinned Chris Cash in an out of this world ladder match. Originally scheduled as a tag team bout, Deranged and Azriel worked the Jersey All Pro Wrestling show in Rahway, New Jersey, and were scheduled to head to CZW but it appears that CZW running ahead of schedule (CZW was on all night in that regard) forced the promotion to go ahead with a singles ladder match. As noted above, that negative was turned into a positive as both Chris Cash and The Joker came out of the match as stars for the company. There were a ton of absolutely insane moves including Cash giving Joker a bulldog while Joker’s head was inside a rung of a ladder off the ropes onto a chair, a superplex off the top rope onto a ladder that was set up at a 45 degree angle stuck within the rungs of another ladder, and the finishing move that saw the Joker hit a tigerdriver variation called the Jokerdriver off the top of a ladder through a table on Cash for the pin. Both men were made to be players here.
*Sonjay Dutt pinned Ruckus with a rollup to win the CZW Junior Heavyweight championship in another great match. Dutt hit Ruckus with his own maneuver the Razzle Dazzle (handspring elbow) at one point.
*Team Ultraviolence (CZW champion John Zandig & Lobo & Wifebeater & Ian Knoxx & New Jack & Nick Gage) defeated Team HI-V (The Messiah & Nate Hatred & Trent Acid & Adam Flash & Johnny Kashmere & B-Boy) in a Cage of Death: Suspended Match. The match featured the promotion’s traditional Cage of Death with weapons (a cactus, a trash can, several pieces of guard rails, a table, and other instruments of destruction) with scaffolding across the top of the cage, a second ring filled with “one million thumbtacks”, tables surrounding the ring, and a “suspended steel cage” platform that ran from the stage of the ECW Arena over and across the thumbtack ring to the Cage of Death. There were steel cage partitions set up at a 45-degree angle that allowed the workers to brawl and throw each other into it. The rules of the match were that the competitors started at the stage, brawled to the Cage of Death and then had to return to the stage to escape. The winning team would be the team that had the most members escape and/or eliminated the entire other team by making their feet hit the floor (meaning tossing them out of a cage or taking bumps out of the cage or the suspended platform).
Before the match, John Zandig sent ring announcer Robby Minero to the back and brought out old announcer Dennis Shock to handle the announcements for the bout. Minero sold it like he was mad. There has been talk of Shock being brought back for some time.
Zandig and Johnny Kashmere started the bout brawling on the suspended cage, which looked awesome. As they made it to the ring, both Trent Acid and The Messiah from HI-V came out to make it a three-on-one. B-Boy was next but was told to wait on the suspended platform as they worked over Zandig.
“Natural Born Killaz” played and the ECW Arena popped huge out of shock and then realization as New Jack entered the match as the surprise babyface competitor. He worked over B-Boy on the platform, then hit the Cage of Death. He took out all the heels, and helped Zandig up, then attacked him and sided with HI-V. New Jack began using a staple gun on Zandig.
Lobo was out next, followed by Ian Knoxx. Lobo made it to the Cage of Death while Knoxx brawled with B-Boy on the suspended platform. Knoxx rammed B-Boy into one of the side partitions, which “gave way” and B-Boy took a bump into the thumbtacks. Knoxx then hung off the partition and dropped into the ring, giving B-Boy an elbowdrop. It was two awesome bumps that looked dangerous but the cage was built to give away in that manner so it was as safe as it could have been. It was just an awesome visual. Adam Flash was out, followed by Wifebeater out next.
At this point the match broke down with a ton of insane bumps as guys were being eliminated by sick bump after sick bump. New Jack dove off the top of the cage onto Zandig, who was laid out on a table on the floor. Acid hit a Yakuza Kick on Knoxx (who was made a player here with his bumps tonight), who took a bump off of the suspended cage, past the Cage of Death through a table on the floor. Lobo hit a Death Valley Driver off the top of the Cage of Death on both Johnny Kashmere and manager Dewey Donovan through two tables to the floor. Nick Gage took a bump into the ring of thumbtacks as well, sent off by Trent Acid, who them took his own bump into them. Wifebeater hit a sidewalk slam off the suspended platform into the tacks on Flash.
With everyone eliminated (only Flash and I believe Wifebeater made it back to the stage, making it 1-1 for each team), Nate Hatred and Messiah worked over Nick Gage and laid him out on a table. Zandig told Hatred “Now! Now!” over the house mic and Hatred turned babyface, attacking Messiah and reuniting his H8 Club team with Nick Gage. Gage poured thumbtacks over a table and he and Hatred sent Messiah off the top of the Cage through the table. They then tossed him out of the cage for the victory, eliminating him. All of Zandig’s team (except New Jack) celebrating in the ring. Zandig told the fans that the last year had been rough on CZW, but this was a start for a new year for the promotion.
When the only downside of a spectacular main event is that there is way too much going on at once to take in and a series of insane bumps that are topped within minutes of the other, you know you walked out seeing something special. For all its faults, CZW was on fire tonight with a good series of matches on the upper portion of the card and a blowaway, insane main event where everyone worked well beyond all semblances of logic, reason, and sanity. I would rate the main event as among the best live matches I’ve seen all year from an entertaining standpoint.
I've written a lot about CZW over the past two years and how I felt they dropped the ball at Cage of Death 3 with organizational and pacing mistakes that cost fans their interest with the company. At Cage of Death 5, CZW did everything right and I sincerely hope that it's a big start in the reversal of that trend. CZW made new fans last night. Now, they will need to keep them. The first step in that regard has already been made, and it will be an interesting story to follow in 2004. I know I am already looking forward to the next show.
CZW NOTES: Although there were cuts and soreness after the main event, miraculously no one walked out with any injuries. Trent Acid ripped up his hand pretty bad in the thumb tacks and Adam Flash was banged up but no one was hurt….There were plans to bring Nick Mondo in at one point for this show, initially to work the main event and then after he decided to retire, to make a retirement announcement. Once Mondo announced his decision to retire on his website, the promotion opted not to bring him as the word was already out. The crowd seemed to think early on that Mondo would be working, although once New Jack showed up, the audience dropped all Mondo chants....The promotion debuts in Allentown, PA on 1/16/04 and returns to the ECW Arena on 1/17/04 with CZW champion John Zandig vs. New Jack in a Street Fight and the start of a ”strong style tournament”.....Tony Mamaluke informed the promotion earlier this week that he had relocated to the West Coast and would be unable to make the show. Scotty Matthews (who debuted for the promotion last month) was tapped to take Mamaluke's slot in the Four Way but did not appear the night of the show….The video of the event can be purchased at www.smartmarkvideo.com and I would highly advise getting your hands on a copy of this video or DVD just for the spectacle of the main event, although there are several great wrestling matches on here as well.
2003 - Pro Wrestling Guerrilla returned to Los Angeles, CA with what was reportedly a really good show. The main event was a six-man tag with Adam Pearce & Colt Cabana & Super Dragon vs. PWG champion Frankie Kazarian & C.M. Punk & Joey Ryan. There were two botched spots involving Kazarian, but other than that, this was reportedly excellent. They went 24:00 before Pearce piledrove Kazarian on the title belt and pinned him. Frankie did a stretcher job afterward. I like the old school touch there. Another excellent match was the Havana Pitbulls over Scorpio Sky & Quicksilver in about 19:00. The first half was mat work, then they went into stiff shots and dives. It was reportedly not quite at the level of the Briscoes vs. Super Dragon & B-Boy but it was still excellent. Samoa Joe beat B.J. Whitmer in about 8:00. Reportedly this was not as good as expected or as their 8/9 ROH match in Dayton, OH. The Ballards beat M-Dogg 20 & Jardi Frantz. They mixed some comedy in there. Post-match, M-Dogg and Frantz brawled. Excalibur beat Chris Bosh by DQ in the hair match, but Bosh didn't lose his hair. Instead, he cut some of Ex's hair off (he had exposed the top of his head through Ex's mask). Scorpio Sky and Quicksilver came out seemingly to make the save, but then they attacked Excalibur. Dragon and Disco Machine made the save. Crowd was around 125-150. Jess McGrath reporting.

As soon as this match was announced at the end of the first hour, I had a feeling that Sheamus would win and maybe set up the immediate rematch. Since there is no ‘general manager’ for Raw, will Cena be able to get a rematch tonight like he promised? It was interesting to hear a lot of fans cheering for Sheamus during the match.)

(This match started slowly and built to an interesting finish with Batista winning the title. Then they brought out Teddy Long for the San Antonio Screwjob. Why is it that when a match is restarted, it only takes seconds to win? What would have happened if Batista hit Taker in the groin with the chair? What about the ring steps? Were they legal? The restarting of the match took away from what Taker and Batista built to)

(This was an okay match and maintained the last few weeks of the feud, but did not live up to the build that should have happened after the Madison Square Garden situation. There was some good action in the match, especially with Kofi blocking the field goal kick and Orton focusing on the arm. The pre-match situation with Rhodes and DiBiase was not good on both parts. They beat up Kofi before a Raw match but won’t do it at a pay per view when the stakes are higher? Then Kofi turns his back on Cody and Ted and they do nothing?)

Shawn and Hunter celebrate in the ring as we go to credits.
(I thought this match was okay but it did not feel like a main event. There were some interesting spots during the match but it felt like an X Division match where everyone had to get in their ‘signature’ moves with no regard for what they had done to their bodies during the match. I liked the spot with the super kick while Jericho was on Show’s shoulders, except for seeing Jericho bounce off the edge of the table. I had hoped to see that type of spot during the tag team Ultimate X match in TNA and it looked unique. The worst thing about Jericho losing is that he is no longer on Raw, and forcing the split of the tag team because Show is a member of the Raw brand [unless they have voted him off the island after turning on the team at Bragging Rights])
(- Overall, I would say that this was a good pay per view that started off a lot stronger than it finished. I thought the best match of the night was the ECW Title match.
- The surprise of seeing Sheamus win was good, but I hope they do something with it tomorrow night on Raw and don’t make this a 24 hour title reign. Maybe they can give someone else the title match at the Royal Rumble instead of the usual suspects so it adds star power to the Rumble match.
- I was a bit disappointed with the Orton/Kingston match but it was still a decent match but I think it hurt Kofi more by having him lose.
- I think Morrison has moved into the title picture for the Smackdown brand with his performance against Drew McIntyre. I thought the best thing for McIntyre was to have Vince McMahon suggest that Josh interview Drew after his win than to ask Vince any questions.
- They need to be consistent with the ‘he used a low blow so the match needs to continue’ rule. Use it for every match or don’t use it at all.)
