12/5 THIS DAY IN HISTORY: TNA ANNOUNCES THEY WILL IGNITE A NEW MONDAY NIGHT WAR, AJ STYLES DEPARTS TNA

By Mike Johnson on 2023-12-05 08:00:00

December 5th

On this day in history in ....

1977 - Bill Dundee & Norvell Austin defeat Dennis Condrey & Phil Hickerson in Memphis, Tennessee to win the AWA Southern Tag Team Title. On the same show, Jerry Lawler defeats Jimmy Valiant for the AWA Southern Heavyweight Title, starting his third of an eventual 33 runs with the belt.

2004 - TNA held their "Turning Point" Pay-per-view in Orlando, Florida, featuring Randy Savage's final match and an incredible spot by Elix Skipper, who walked along the top of a steel cage like a tight rope before giving James Storm a rana off of it during the final match of the evening. Here are the results of the show:
- Eric Young & Bobby Roode defeated BG James & Ron Killings to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship.
- Hector Garza, Sonny Siaki, & Sonjay Dutt defeated Michael Shane, Frankie Kazarian, & Kid Kash when Garza pinned Kazarian.
- Monty Brown defeated Abyss in a "Serengeti survival" match when Abyss was slammed into thumbtacks.
- Johnny B. Badd & Pat Kenney defeated Glenn Gilberti & Johnny Swinger when Badd pinned Gilberti. Jacquelyn Moore was the special referee.
- Diamond Dallas Page defeated Raven.
- NWA X-Division Champion Petey Williams defeated Chris Sabin.
- Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles & Randy Savage defeated Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, & Jeff Jarrett when Savage pinned Jarrett.
- Chris Harris & James Storm defeated Elix Skipper & Christopher Daniels in a steel cage match when Storm pinned Daniels.

2006 - During an investors conference call, Linda McMahon explained the decision to stop ECW house shows, stating that WWE felt ECW running smaller venues for live events, while a "unique experience" for fans, was not going to help them in building the brand, and that is why they decided to cancel the ECW events and instead pair up ECW and Smackdown, with the idea that ECW will have their own shows again down the road in larger venues.  Obviously, years have passed, and ECW never returned to their own branded shows and were eventually shut down as a separate TV entity.

An investor asked why WWE isn't running the three brands as separate companies, each with their own budget and management.  The caller noted that he sees no difference in the three brands, and the crossovers make it seem like one large product, not three distinct brands.  Linda said that they originally split the brands to create separate touring groups.  She said that WWE having separate brands has resulted in them creating more stars and has also resulted in licensing growth.  Linda said (and boy, was this one a stretch) that WWE has created distinct brands, and that the crossovers enable them to have more interesting storylines and create a greater sense of competition between the brands.  She didn't acknowledge the part of the question that brought up the idea of the brands being run independently of each other.

2009 - TNA announced they would be going head-to-head with WWE on January 4, 2010 with a live three-hour Impact special going against WWE Raw.  TNA would later move Impact to Monday nights on Spike TV for several weeks, before being moved back to Thursdays. TNA issued the following announcement:

HULKAMANIA IS COMING BACK TO MONDAY NIGHT ON “TNA iMPACT!” LIVE JANUARY 4 ON SPIKE TV

Hulk Hogan’s First Live Appearance On Spike TV’s “TNA iMPACT” Will Be In A Special 3-Hour Live Episode Monday, January 4 At 8:00 PM ET/PT

The biggest name in professional wrestling history, Hulk Hogan, will make his first live appearance on Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling’s “TNA iMPACT!” in a live 3-hour special on Spike TV Monday, January 4, 2010 at 8:00PM ET/PT. Hogan and TNA President Dixie Carter attended “The Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights” Finale in Las Vegas where Hogan made the announcement in an interview with Joe Rogan.

“TNA iMPACT!” will be going against “WWE Monday Raw” on USA Network, the first time two wrestling companies have broadcast live head-to-head since the “Monday Night Wars” in the late 1990’s between WWE and WCW.  This “iMPACT!” special will broadcast live from the TNA iMPACT! Zone at Universal Studios in Orlando, Fl.

Hogan’s first appearance inside the six-sided ring of TNA Wrestling will follow weeks of speculation after Hogan and Carter announced their partnership on October 27 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Hogan has hinted in various media interviews that he’ll have multiple surprises in store for TNA Wrestling fans.

“I knew when I signed with TNA, that it would be important to make a statement with the first episode. Going head-to-head on January 4th, makes the statement loud and clear: Game on!” Hogan said.

“TNA is kicking off 2010 in the biggest way possible with the biggest name in the history of our sport. Hulk Hogan is a pop culture icon, and his arrival will change not only TNA, but the entire professional wrestling landscape. We’re firing that first shot,” Carter said.

Joining Hogan for the three-hour live “iMPACT!” will be TNA World Heavyweight Champion “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles, Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, Kevin Nash, “The Samoan Submission Machine” Samoa Joe, “The Boss” Bobby Lashley and “The Blueprint” Matt Morgan.

“TNA iMPACT!” will resume its normal timeslot on Thursday, January 7th at 9:00 PM ET/PT with an encore viewing of the live “iMPACT!” special.

TNA President Dixie Carter posted the following on her twitter account: "Hogan to debut Jan 4 in a live 3 hr iMPACT! special up against Raw. How's that for a 1st shot? Spread the word."

2010 - King Curtis Iaukea passed away at his home at the age of 73.  During his long career, Iaukea worked for a number of different territories, including the WWWF, Australia, the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, San Francisco, All Star Pro Wrestling in Britain and Championship Wrestling from Florida.  A tall, girthy man with a loud bellowing voice, he made a tremendous heel and held titles in just about every promotion he worked for, including for IWA World titles in Australia, the WWWF Tag Team belts with Baron Mikel Scicluna, the Florida Heavyweight championship and more.  Iaukea also appeared in a Three Stooges film as a villain, pre-dating just about every wrestler who ever made a crossover to film by years.  Iaukeas' final appearances on a national basis were as Kamala's original WWF manager "The Wizard" before slowly being phased out in favor of Mr. Fuji. He later made appearances in WCW vignettes for the Dungeon of Doom group that feuded with Hulk Hogan in the mid-1990s. Iaukea had been ill for some time, according to his son, Rocky Iaukea.

2011 - Bill Dundee released his awesome autobiography "If You Don't Want The Answer, Don't Ask The Question."

2011 - WWE broadcast Raw.  Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

We are live from Tampa, Florida and your announcers are Michael ‘Big Cheddar’ Cole and Jerry ‘Six Seasons and a Movie’ Lawler.

John Cena makes his way to the ring and he might not be in a good mood because there are some people in the crowd who are booing him. John says hello to his current hometown crowd and he says that it is that time again. Cena says that last Monday was kind of interesting. He reminds us that he was on Piper’s Pit last week and he thanks Roddy for being a friend, for being a WWE Hall of Famer, and for being part of the WWE Universe. John points out that everyone tells him how they feel about him every week. Cena says that Piper told him how he felt last week.

Cena says that there is no show without all of the people in the stands. He says that it is pretty cut and dry. If they don’t watch, they don’t work. He says that everyone has the right to tell him what they think about him. Cena respects the people who boo him and he thanks the people for cheering for him.

Cena says that on certain circumstances he has heard people chant things like ‘Fruity Peebles’ and they oblige. Cena says that is the energy that Roddy Piper talked about. Cena says that he has been dealing with reactions like that since he got to the company. He says that what matters to him was the slap. Not Piper’s slap, but the slaps on the mat when CM Punk defeated Alberto Del Rio to retain the WWE Championship.

Cena says that he has respect for CM Punk, but he needs a number one contender. Cena says that the only thing that will be bigger than Cena versus the Rock at Wrestlemania is Cena versus Rock for the WWE Championship.

Alberto Del Rio comes out and he is without his music, his car, or his Ricardo. Alberto tells Cena that the title match is his.

Cena wants to know what part of ‘You Lost’ did Del Rio not get.

Del Rio says that the fans do not matter and they do not count. Last week, John Laurinaitis said that if CM Punk got intentionally disqualified he would be the WWE Champion. Alberto says that he has something to show to everyone.

We see footage from last week when Punk gave Del Rio snake eyes onto the exposed turnbuckle without the referee seeing it.

Del Rio points out that CM Punk cheated last week and he did it on purpose. Del Rio says that it is not his fault that the referee did not see it. Del Rio claims that he should be the WWE Champion.

Vickie Guerrero comes to the ring with Dolph Ziggler and she throws out a few excuse mes. She says that neither Cena nor Del Rio deserve a WWE Championship match. Vickie says that she is with the only person who deserves a title match and that is Dolph Ziggler.

Dolph asks Alberto and John if they disagree. Dolph asks them which one of them beat Randy Orton last week on Raw. Dolph asks which of them is the longest reigning champion. He asks which one of them will be the simultaneous WWE and US Champion.

Cena calls Dolph ‘The Show Off’ because of what he heard Cole say. Cena has a new name for Dolph. Cena suggests changing ‘show’ with ‘jerk’ and we have it done.

Dolph says that it is not showing off if you back it up every night.

Cena wonders why Dolph is not giving a title shot to the man who deserves a US Title Shot and he brings up Zack Ryder.

Dolph says that he wonders if beating a dead horse or overrated are trending now. He says that he is getting the next title match.

In case we needed another person to claim that they deserve a title match, Miz makes his way to the ring as we see what he has done to R Truth and John Morrison.

Miz throws out a few reallys and then he says that he has some news for everyone. Miz says that next week is the Slammys. He points out that he beat John Cena at Wrestlemania, his title reign lasted longer than a month, and he doesn’t need Vickie Guerrero to get a reaction. He also took care of R Truth and John Morrison. He is the 2010 Superstar of the Year and the man who should be the next WWE Champion.

John Laurinaitis comes out and he introduces himself to the people who fall asleep when he shows up on the screen. John says that he has been falsely accused of being a boring executive figurehead who cannot make creative decisions. John says that each of them will face a Smackdown superstar and if they win, they will be in the WWE Championship match at TLC. There is going to be a live contract signing tonight on Raw.

John says that he has a special match for Cena tonight. It is the ‘Social Experiment’. He tells John to see who his opponent is.

Nash asks if it is Triple H and when Otunga tells him it isn’t Hunter, he has no worries.

We go to commercial, but are you ready for the most electrifying thing in WWE, the contract signing?

We are back and Miz, Alberto Del Rio, and Ricardo Rodriguez are in the ring. John Laurinaitis makes his way to the ring (but he has no entrance music).

John says that it is exciting to be part of the WWE Universe and he talks about the excitement about the introduction of Brodus Clay, the Slammys, and Mark Henry versus John Cena which will take place next week on Raw.

It is time for CM Punk to make his way to the ring so he can do something inside the arena other than talk to Evan Bourne.

Punk moves the chair out of the way and he stares at his two opponents for the WWE Championship. Punk then moves the table and John wants to know what he is doing. Punk mentions that this is the biggest cliché in WWE because they always end up in a pier six brawl (which he hopes will trend on Twitter). There has not been a peaceful contract signing since Wrestlemania 3 so he tells John to play the part of Jack Tunney and then they can sign the contract and get fighting.

John says that he is all about excitement and the WWE Championship will be defended in a Triple Threat Table, Ladders, and Chairs Match.

Punk says that means he has to beat the guy he pinned last week and the guy who lost at Survivor Series, he is okay about that.

Miz wants to talk about what has happened since Survivor Series. He has taken out R Truth and John Morrison.

Punk asks if he took them out on a date. He wants to know where Miz took them. He suggests that he took them to see the new Twilight flick . . . not that there is anything wrong with that.

Miz says that he took them up to the stage and face planted them on the steel stage. Miz says that Morrison was even released as a result.

Laurinaitis wishes Morrison the best in his future endeavors.

Miz points out that those were friends of his at one point. Now he gets to face two people he does not like in a match where the WWE Championship is on the line. Miz says that he is the Most Must See WWE Champion of all time. At TLC he is going to take back what is his.

Punk says that was a lot of information and he agrees that they are not friends. He says that he does not have TMZ on speed dial to make sure that they meet him at LAX. Punk says that he concerns himself with being the best wrestler in the world.

Del Rio says that he is tired of hearing these two crying like little girls. He says that he has won everything in 2011. He won the Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank, and the WWE Title. He is going to beat Punk again and there is nothing that Punk or Miz can do again.

Punk says that if Del Rio says that it is his destiny, he is going to start drinking.

Miz says that he might not like Del Rio and they are going to tear each other apart, but there is one thing that they can agree upon. It is that Punk will not be walking out WWE Champion.

Miz signs the contract, then Del Rio signs the contract. Del Rio tells Punk that he is going to lose.

Punk looks at the contract and wonders if they can get to fighting after he signs it. Punk signs the contract.

John says that the match is official. He wishes each of them good luck and then he is looking forward to the match so he wants a WWE photographer to capture the moment.

Punk refuses to join in and he says that even John’s contract signings are boring. They are supposed to be violent. Punk says that if you want to do something right, you have to do it yourself. Punk hits Miz and then Del Rio. Punk gets Ricardo up for the Go To Sleep but Del Rio attacks Punk. Del Rio picks up the chair and he throws it to the floor (instead of hitting Punk with it). Del Rio sets up the table and Miz hits Del Rio from behind. Punk with a knee to Del Rio and then he bulldogs Del Rio through the table. Punk gets Miz up for the Go To Sleep.

2012 - CM Punk passed John Cena on the list of WWE championship reigns.

In response, John Cena wrote the following on Twitter:

"Injured or healthy, today CM Punk is the longest reigning WWE champ in the modern era. It would be hypocritical not to acknowledge and respect it. Sometimes luck is as valuable as skill, but the record books will not say it was a 'lucky 381 and counting,' it'll just say 381 and counting."

"I do wish CM Punk a speedy full recovery. He will need EVERYTHING he has to even step into a ring with The Rock. I know from experience."

2012 - WWE broadcast Main Event.  Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

This week we will see a battle between the United States Champion and the Intercontinental Champion thanks to the challenge made last week.

This week’s show comes from North Charleston, South Carolina and your announcers are Michael ‘Spurrier’ Cole and The Miz.

Michael Cole announces that CM Punk underwent surgery due to a knee injury that the WWE says occurred when Ryback put Punk through a table. They will have more later tonight.

It is time to talk about the champion versus champion match and Miz says that Antonio Cesaro has a chance to be one of the all time greats.

We go back to last week when Antonio Cesaro claimed to be the greatest champion in WWE history only to be interrupted by Kofi Kingston.

Josh Mathews is in the back with Kofi Kingston and he asks Kofi why he challenged Antonio Cesaro. Kofi says that people know him as the man who flies around the ring beating people with a smile on his face. When he beat the Miz to become the Intercontinental Champion, it unleashed something in him. A different side. Something intense. When Antonio came out last week and he said that he was the greatest champion, the intensity made him do it. Once in a while, a wildcat has to show his teeth and drop the boom. Tonight is on of those nights.

We take a look at what happened on Raw when Antonio’s United States title was put on the line in a fatal four way match with R Truth, Kofi Kingston, and Wade Barrett.

We take a look at Antonio Cesaro with a video package.

We find out that Antonio Cesaro will face R Truth one more time for the United States title at TLC.

Antonio gets on the mic in the ring and he says that despite everyone’s best efforts, he is still the United States Champion. They put his title on the line on Monday hoping that he would lose. This is all that this country has come to. Empty hopes and dreams. Nobody wants to work hard any more. You would rather sit on your fat butts and let others do the work for them. He works hard and that is why he is our United States Champion.

He says that he does not hate the people, he pities them. He gladly welcomes the ‘USA’ chants because he has proven without a doubt that this is the United States of Antonio.

Before the match starts, Wade Barrett and R Truth join the two Michaels at the announce table.

2013 - AJ Styles made his final appearance for TNA Impact Wrestling during a TV taping in Orlando, FL.  The taping saw the following results:

*Chris Sabin defeated Austin Aries to win the TNA X-Division Championship after Sabin ordered Velvet to distract the referee and she did, despite not wanting to.

*Ethan Carter came out and challenged Jeff Hardy. Hardy wasn't there so he made the referee count him out. Before they hit ten, Sting came out and challenged him to fight like a man. Carter agreed, then said that he would fight Sting at Genesis.

*Joseph Park defeated Bully Ray via DQ when Raw kicked him in the groin and began putting lighter fluid all over him with the idea he was going to set Park on fire. Anderson made the save but the same thing happened. The officials forced Ray out

*Dixie Carter came out and had AJ Styles sign a one night contract for his match against Magnus. She said after tonight, she never wants to see him again. Styles cut a promo on Carter saying she bets against him and he always wins. He said that if she thinks anyone is going to interfere because of the No DQ stips, he has friends in the back too. She says she paid him and she pays them and no one will help him because she owns all of them and will break them like she's going to break him. Styles said she doesn't know a damn thing about wrestling and he made the belt mean more taking it around the globe than she ever did, and now all she has is a paper champion to show for herself. Magnus comes out and says that it will be the last time Styles ever gets to call him that.

TNA Tag Team champions Bro Mans defeated Joseph Park and Eric Young. On the screen, Gail Ki and Lei'd Tapa attacked ODB so Young left to rescue her, leaving Park alone to be beaten.

*James Storm and Gunner went back and forth on the mic about their issues. Storm challenged Gunner to a ladder match for the TNA title shot. They agreed. Genesis maybe?

*Ethan Carter III beat Samoa Joe. He attacked Joe in the back and beat him down. I think the idea was to prevent Joe from helping AJ.

*Kurt Angle defeated Bad Influence in a handicap steel cage match after Bobby Roode somehow talked his way out of wrestling Angle.

*Backstage, Dixie Carter told Roode that he has to be a team player, so tonight he's wrestling Sting in a cage.

*Bobby Roode beat Sting by escaping the cage after Ethan Carter and Rockstar Spud brought him a nightstick and be beat Sting down with it.

*Magnus defeated AJ Styles in a No DQ Match to unify the TNA titles. The funny thing is that by the time this airs in January, WWE will have done the same angle and it will look like TNA was playing off of TLC! There were a ton of run-ins from Sting, Carter, Bad Influence and others and an angle where Earl Hebner walked off because he didn't want to screw AJ after he had been worked over. Sting got involved and the second ref, Brian Hebner got bumped. AJ Styles hit the Styles Clash but with no referee, Earl Hebner ran out, only to be pulled out of the ring by Kazarian and Daniels. Bobby Roode hit the ring and destroyed Styles with his finisher over and over. Dixie Carter brought another referee out and all the heels attacked Sting to keep him from helping AJ. Magnus pinned him.

After the match and this may have been for just the fans here, Styles thanked the fans and said that this place was his home. He said that wherever he goes or whether he stays, the fans here are a part of him and he killed himself for TNA and the fans. He said that storyline or not, Dixie can forget about him, but he'll never forget about the fans. He thanked everyone for giving him the blessing of being able to wrestle and had a long farewell.

*Curry Man returned, defeating Extreme Tiger from Mexico.
