WWE Superstar John Cena’s Passion for Poker
There isn’t much that wrestling superstar John Cena hasn’t accomplished in his glittering career. The twelve times WWE champion is enamored as the “Face of the WWE†as he remains one of the lynchpins of the organization even after so long on the roster. And with being one of the longest serving pro wrestlers in the WWE also comes a large career haul, with many publications reporting that Cena now has a net worth of around $35 million from his wrestling, acting and rap career.
And although Cena has sustained some serious injuries during his tenure in the WWE, he still in very good shape for a 37-year old who’s spent a lot of his time active in the WWE without many layoffs, apart from a couple of the aforementioned serious injury layoffs. Cena rarely takes extended breaks from the WWE so it’ll be interesting how long he’ll be able to keep this up.
So, it was interesting to here Cena earlier this year talk about another interesting development in his life. Cena profess to online publication Bluff Magazine that he is an avid poker fan and regularly engages in games with his fellow wrestlers during travel time. Although Cena didn’t elaborate on who joins him for a game of poker, he did point out that the group don’t actually play cash games – they simply play for fun.
With Cena’s hectic schedule, he has been using poker as a way to wind down from physical competition and although he regularly visits Las Vegas with many of the annual WWE shows, he said that the bright lights of Vegas haven’t lured him in yet, to compete competitively at one of Vegas’ professional tournaments.
Cena wouldn’t be the first competitive athlete to be lured into professional poker events. Since casino gaming grown exponentially through the huge boom in the late 90s when InterCasino was launched as the first online wagering website, gaming took an unprecedented spike in popularity. Poker players were turned into superstars and many celebrity events were created, most notably to help raise money for charities. Since then athletes such as MMA fighter George St-Pierre, basketball star Paul Pierce and tennis ace Boris Becker have all appeared under the bright lights of some of poker’s biggest tournaments.
Although Cena is yet to confirm whether he will actually transition to a professional tournament when his wrestling schedule will allow, it’d be great to see how he’d fair in a charity tournament against some fellow wrestlers. Which poses this question: if you were to organize a WWE charity poker event, who would you have in it?
