Trying to keep from hitting another vehicle, Clay slammed on the brakes, causing McGuirk to hit the windshield, shattering his glasses. McGuirk had already lost sight in one eye when he was young, and the glasses breaking caused him to lose the sight in the other. McGuirk's 16-year career was ended. His NWA World Junior Heavyweight Title was vacated as a result, opening the door for another of McGuirk's trainees, Danny Hodge, to take the reins as the leader in junior heavyweight wrestling years later. Hodge would win the title eight times from 1960 to 1976.

Typhoon hit Hawk with a chair as Hawk was set up to deliver the Doomsday Device on DiBiase, knocking him from the top rope, and I.R.S. knocked Animal from the ring as well. All this happened while Sensational Sherri distracted the referee, allowing DiBiase to get the pin on the downed Hawk. The Disasters beat The Big Boss Man and Tito Santana earlier on in the show, and were originally scheduled to face LOD for the title, but the matches were switched by WWF President Jack Tunney. Tunney claimed The Natural Disasters had had enough unsuccessful attempts at winning the title.

Smackdown initially premiered as a special in 1999 on the fledgling UPN Network before being launched as the first weekly professional wrestling series in decades on broadcast network TV.  The series aired on Thursdays until 2005, when it was moved to Fridays and rechristened Friday Night Smackdown. There was a belief several years ago that the series was going to be dropped by UPN, specifically after public statements by Les Moonves indicating such, but the series was instead moved to Fridays (considered a graveyard night for TV ratings), where it continued to do well.

When UPN and the WB Network merged, Smackdown became one of the series that made the jump to the new network and continued to do good ratings, particulatly among the Hispanic demographic, where it was routinely one of the top weekly series thanks to the star power of Rey Mysterio and the late Eddie Guerrero.

With the agreement from both sides that contractual negotiations have ended, WWE will begin the process of pursuing a new network, whether that be broadcast or cable, for the series.

WWE SmackDown Leaves CW

STAMFORD, Conn., February 7, 2008 - The following statement was issued today by World Wrestling Entertainment

After a successful decade of "SmackDown" on both UPN and The CW, World Wrestling Entertainment and The CW have agreed to conclude our partnership. Since The CW's exclusive negotiation period ran out as of last Thursday, January 31, we have been contacted and have been in negotiations with other networks. "WWE SmackDown" will continue to air on The CW until the conclusion of the 2007-08 broadcast season. We are grateful to Les Moonves, Dawn Ostroff, and their entire organization for bringing "WWE SmackDown" to millions of viewers for so many years.

2009 - Chris Jericho was involved in an incident with fans while attempting to leave a WWE event in British Columbia.

A Youtube video that popped up online featured the following description: "After Jericho drove out of the parking lot, a fan ran up to his SUV, starting knocking on the window and fingering him while yelling. Jericho opened the door and had the fan kick it shut. This is when I started recording.  The first little bit shows pretty much nothing, but it's there. According to other bystanders, this fan had been verbally harassing Jericho prior to the show. It's a shame that one fan had to ruin it for everyone, I hope he is found and charged. "

Matt sent this account of the incident as well:

This afternoon after the WWE house show in Victoria, my girlfriend and I went to see the wrestlers leave the arena (this was my girlfriend's first WWE event and she wanted to see them leave).  The following is exactly what happened right in front of me and about another 50 wrestling fans who happened to be there are well:

Chris Jericho exited the building, and walked over to his white rental vehicle.  The crowd watching him leave was heckling him, but he was ignoring it.  He gets in his vehicle and drives out of the arena parking lot, right past the crowd of us.  As Jericho stops at a stop sign, a fan runs into the street and starts banging on his rental vehicle.  At this point about 50 people rush into the middle of the intersection, blocking traffic in several directions, with no police and very inadequate and incompetent security (no WWE security guards period).  My girlfriend and I were literally in the very front of the crowd, and this all went down literally five feet away from us.

Chris Jericho opens the door to his vehicle in the middle of the road, and the fan shuts the door back on him.  Jericho then gets out of the vehicle completely, and punches the fan in the face!  This prompts another fan to jump in (he was friends with the first) and attack Jericho, and Jericho scuffles with the second guy.  At this point, a woman who knows the second guy who attacked Jericho starts to jump in and get in Jericho's face (because he was fighting her friend).

This is where the Save on Foods Rent-A-Security Guards stopped standing around watching this happen (I swear they thought they were watching a wrestling angle or something), and stepped in to separate Jericho and the woman, who was shoving him.  Looking at Jericho's face he was obviously ready to explode and was restraining himself...but then the sh**storm happened...

He spit in the girl's face, and curses at her.  The woman then spit in Jericho's face.  Jericho then started cursing out the woman some more, and was getting ready to go back into his vehicle (as all of this is still happening in the middle of the road).  While he was turning to go into his vehicle, one of the guys he was fighting shoved Jericho against his car.  Another guy then shoved Jericho, and that time he bumped his head on the top of his vehicle.  This was where Jericho seriously snapped.

After bumping his head, Jericho went into a sh**storm, throwing and swinging at everybody around him.  He knocked one guy to the ground, told another fan that he was going to "f**king kill you".  The woman who got spit on was still yelling at Jericho, so he pie faced her away from him (because the arena security couldn't keep them separated).  As soon as he put his hands on the woman, ANOTHER fan jumps in and starts swinging at Jericho.  Jericho grabs the guy and starts throwing him to the ground, and at this point I have to yank my girlfriend out of the way and into some other people because Jericho had literally thrown himself and the other guy into our direction and we would of been knocked down by the scuffle.

The arena security try again at this point to regain order, and two of them grab Jericho and start yelling at him to calm down, to which Jericho responds by taking a swing at one of the security guards and yelling at them to "do your f***ing job and get the f***ing police here".  Then he shoves the second guard to the ground and tells him to "stay the f** off me".

Well, as that happens, the chick lunges at Jericho AGAIN, and this time Jericho actually punches the woman in the face, and shoves her to the ground.  This stunned everyone, and the girl's friends ended up jumping in trying to fight Jericho, to which he fought all of them off, then storms into his vehicle swearing and speeds off, running through a stop sign in the process.

This whole thing happened over the span of about 5 minutes (of the street being blocked by this ordeal), and the woman ended up calling the cops on Jericho.  They arrived 5 minutes after Jericho left, complete with a Paddy Wagon.  The WWE's head of security did not see the incident, so he was there trying to figure out what happened along with the cops at the same time while yapping on his cell phone, and the woman is pressing charges against Jericho.  As crazy and unbelievable this sounds, it can all be backed up with whatever police report was filed on the scene this afternoon.

I hope this made sense, as a lot of stuff happened.  If you have any questions or need clarification, just ask.  This was taped by several people with cell phone cameras, but there were only 50 people down there so I hope the video makes it way to the internet.  Regardless, this went down as one of the craziest things I have ever seen in my life.

WWE issued the following statement regarding the event:

"After leaving a live event in Victoria, British Columbia on Saturday evening, Chris Jericho's car was attacked by a mob when he was stopped at a stop sign. Unable to proceed, Chris Jericho exited his car to ask the crowd to clear a path so he could continue through the intersection. A man and a woman physically and verbally assaulted Mr. Jericho. Arena and WWE security arrived to establish enough order to allow Mr. Jericho to re-enter his vehicle and depart. The local police arrived minutes later. Mr. Jericho was unharmed in the incident. The WWE is working with local authorities who are investigating the incident to identify the man and woman who fled the scene."

2009 - Oh yeah, there was a show, too!  Matt sent the following live report from the aforementioned event in British Columbia:

WWE Raw/ECW in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Save on Foods Memorial Centre
Saturday, February 7th, 2009

I attended the WWE house show in Victoria, British Columbia this afternoon with my girlfriend.  It was the worst live event I have been to of all time.  I paid $120 Canadian for two tickets in the lower bowl, and the show was not even 2 hours long, with no intermission and 10 minutes of kids dancing in the ring with Finlay and Hornswoggle.  I seriously feel ripped off by this event and will never go to another WWE house show again; and I will advise my friends the same thing as well.  Here are the results of the show, even though what happened after the show is much more important and I will get to that in a separate e-mail:

1. Intercontinental Title Match: CM Punk (c) defeated William Regal.  This match literally consisted of stalling, a few armbars, restholds, and the GTS by Punk for the win.  I was disappointed considering how I know how good of wrestlers these two are.  This really bugged me because this match represented a running theme throughout the afternoon, where it appeared that a lot of the wrestlers weren't really giving it their all in their matches because it's a matinee show.  I think that is unfortunate, because ticket prices are no cheaper on matinees than they are on normal live events, and yes they have the cheap $20 seats, but any of the good seats are costing you $40-$50 per seat, so that's still a hefty chunk of change.  I wish CM Punk and William Regal (among others) had of kept that in mind during their half-assed matches, and I'm sorry to pick on Punk and Regal but their match had to be disappointment of the night.

2. World Tag Team Titles Match: John Morisson and The Miz (c) defeated Goldust and Haas Hogan.  This match was good for some laughs.  The crowd was really dead for most of the night, but this match got some laughs out of the Hogan spots.  Some good heat for Morisson and The Miz at some times though.

3. Mark Henry defeated Tommy Dreamer.  Dreamer actually got a pop out of the crowd, but not a very memorable match.

4. Rey Mysterio and Kofi Kingston defeated Kane and Mike Knox.  Best match of the night, all four of them are pros and looked like they were trying to give the crowd a good show, as opposed to other wrestlers who appeared to just want to make their matinee appearances and get the hell out of the town (see CM Punk and William Regal).

At this point, I assumed there would be an intermission, and headed to the concession stand.  I was wrong, as Finlay with Hornswoggle came to the ring for the ECW Title Match with Jack Swagger.  Well I never saw it myself because I wanted French fries (shows how much I care about ECW these days); but I don't think there was even a match...Finlay's music played again and they started dancing with kids.  This literally went on for 10 minutes.

5. Beth Phoenix (w/Santino Marella) defeated Kelly Kelly.  My girlfriend and I are Glamorella fans, so this was one we were looking forward to.  Santino cut a promo before the match talking about how he loves Tim Hortons, and that he loves the double doubles.  The crowd were into Marella.  Beth eventually kicked her ass and won.

6. World Heavyweight Title Match: John Cena (c) defeated Randy Orton and Chris Jericho.  This was an entertaining match.  Jericho cut a heel promo about not really being Canadian before the match to get boos.  When Cena entered the ring, he threw his shirt to this kid with an afro in the wrong row.  Orton started to mouth off the guy and then throughout the entire match, Orton would mouth off the guy...it was pretty funny.  Cena even rolled Orton up into a schoolboy while Orton was mouthing him off.  It was a good match.

Notes:  The entire show was 1 hour and 45 minutes, including 10 minutes of Finlay dancing with kids; and a match that included armbars and restholds.  I felt ripped off by the effort given by some of the wrestlers on the show, but I haven't even got to the most messed up part of my WWE experience.  After the show, Kelly Kelly signed autographs with the fans before leaving, and she was the only one who did that so kudos to her.  John Morrison and The Miz were in character as they were leaving, mouthing off bystanders as they left.

2010 - Ron Simmons competed in his retirement match.  Larry Goodman filed the following live report:

Purks International Championship Wrestling continued their phenomenally successful run in Cedartown Saturday night with a show featuring Ron Simmons’ official retirement match, as well as appearances by Awesome Kong and Christy Hemme.

Attendance at the Purks Building was 900-1000. It was the fourth consecutive month Purks has drawn crowds in that range, numbers unheard of during the 12 years I’ve been covering indie wrestling in Georgia. Not coincidentally, the current run started with the decision to bring in major stars for each show - Scott Steiner, Steiner Brothers and Diamond Dallas Page consecutively. They may have had more in the building in December for Steiner Brothers, but there were few tickets given away for last night, so it was their best paid crowd thus far.

Similar to my Purks experience in December, it was a very entertaining show with a super responsive crowd. One that doesn't care all that much about the quality of the wrestling. The Cedartown fans turn out to see stars and to see them up close and personal. They want a good story. Purks wrestling delivers the goods.

Booking a monthly show presents its own unique challenges. Purks only books five or six matches. For various reasons, they ended up doing only four this time, leaving little room for fluff or deadening material. No worries. The stories kept things plenty interesting enough. The silver lining in the way the show was structured, was the way it minimized the chances of overexposing things in the ring.

Christy Hemme opened the show with the announcement that A. J. Styles was coming Purks Wrestling on March 6. There must be a hefty percentage of TNA viewers in Cedartown, because they popped huge for it. Hemme then led the crowd in a “TNA” chant.

Hemme was joined by the Purks Heavyweight Champion Bobby Hayes and his evil cronies, Terry Lawler and Alexander the Great. They all got the rub, so to speak, of being in the ring with Hemme. Television does not do her justice, and she comes across as someone with a true passion for pro wrestling. Hemme accused Hayes of having something to do with his scheduled opponent Jimmy Rave not being there. Hayes didn’t deny it and added that he wanted something to do with Hemme. She slapped him. The scene was turning dark and ugly. Air Paris (scheduled to open against Lawler in a singles) came to her rescue, one against three. He got some shots in before the heels beat him down. David Young sprinted (yes, sprinted) to the ring for the save and got a great pop. The heels bailed to ringside. Young said the more things change, the more they stay the same – the same pieces of trash still causing trouble. Young pointed out that he and Paris had both beaten Hayes, and now Hemme was whipping his tail. “I’ve never been so glad to see your ugly, fat head,” Paris said. He knew the odds were against him, but he wasn’t going to allow Hayes and Co. take advantage of a woman. Paris suggested they get a partner and make it a six man for the main event, and they would have Hemme in their corner. Very well done all the way around and a great way to use Hemme.

(1) Shaun Banks defeated Simon Sermon in a falls count anywhere - no DQ – no time limit match (10:40). This was the blow off of a feud that has been building for several months. Match wasn’t announced as falls count anywhere, but that stip became apparent soon enough. Banks skinned the cat and dropkicked Sermon, who dipped to the outside. Banks posted him and covered on the floor. Banks took a wicked looking shot into the post and Sermon got a near fall on the floor. Banks deposited Sermon head first into a giant trash barrel. Made a great visual and the crowd loved it. They brawled through the seating area a bit. Sermon hung Banks over the top rope by his do rag. They took turns bashing each other with a plastic Coke bottle. Sermon resorted to a low blow. Sermon used a chair to do a number on Banks, including an atomic drop on the edge of the chair. Sermon busted out an honest to God wrestling move, a Saito suplex. Payback proved to be hell, though, as Banks used a testicular claw to start his comeback. Banks hit two spinkicks and finished Sermon with a beauty of a top rope corkscrew elbow drop. Great stuff. Not what you would normally want in an opening match, but this wasn’t a normal show.

Postmatch, the flamboyant Sermon engaged in some catch as catch can with referee Spanky Emerson.

(2) Awesome Kong pinned Nigel Sherrod in 8:39. Too Tall Shortts was the special referee due to past humiliations suffered at the hands of Sherrod. Sherrod was doing his loud-mouth-sexiest- man-to-hit-Cedartown routine. It’s ridiculous and totally obnoxious and gets incredible heat. Sherrod warned Shortts not to stick his nose in, or risk being sent out on the short bus, cut down even shorter than he already was. Sherrod guaranteed a powerbomb on Kong. The pop for Kong’s entrance was huge. Sherrod gyrated as he stripped off his vest and licked his biceps. And I thought Rhett Titus was disgusting. Kong chopping the bejeezus out of him. Sherrod took a spin bump off Kong's clothesline. Kong squashed Sherrod with a corner freight train splash. Sherrod's shoulder tackles couldn't make a dent. The heat started when Kong charged and Sherrod pulled the ropes down to spill her out. The deal was Shortts doing super slow counts for Sherrod’s pin attempts. It didn’t make sense for Kong to need help against the likes of Nigel. Better Shortts calls it down the middle and acts amused at Sherrod’s predicament. Sherrod tried for a powerbomb. That got nowhere and Kong flattened him with a butt drop. Kong leveled Sherrod with the spinning back fist. Sherrod headed for the dressing room. Shortts bit Sherrod’s butt to send him back to the ring. Sherrod tried to fight off the Awesome Bomb, but it was no use. Kong carried Shortts back the dressing room on her shoulders. Very entertaining.

Long intermission for inring photos with Simmons, Kong and Hemme. It really helps when you can bring in stars as gracious as these people were.

Ring announcer Josh Hayes disclosed that he had received a phone call threatening him with a beatdown if he showed up, but he wasn’t backing down. I have no clue what’s up with that.

John Arden entered the ring with manager Jackie Rosedale. John said brother Adam couldn’t be there to defend the tag team titles because he had a 102 degree fever. Arden said he and his 400 pounds would defend the tag team titles alone. Rosedale insisted on a partner and brought out Sermon. Arden objected. Sermon compared Arden to a dinosaur – big size, small brain. Sermon instructed Arden to do as he was told. Arden continued to resist until he was attacked by Thomas Britain, Sermon’s partner in Exotic Ones. Arden bled, just enough to make the point. Sermon demanded the title belts. Thunder & Lightning came out. Was this a title match? Only time would tell.

(3) Thunder & Lightning (Chris Ganzer & Chris Lightning) beat Exotic Ones (Simon Sermon & Thomas Britain) to win the Purks Tag Team Titles in 11:16. T & L got off to a fast start, using quick tags to keep a fresh man in at all times. Ganzer hit a flying bodypress on Sermon but Britain jumped in to break up the pin. Great cut off spot by Sermon – a jawcracker out of crucifix powerbomb position. Ganzer was the babyface-in-peril. Sermon carried the load, mostly working on Ganzer’s shoulder. Lots of crowd love for T & L here. Off the hot tag, Lightning cleaned house and took Britain over the top with a huracanrana. Emerson got bumped. Arden returned to smoke Simon with a spear. T & L hit a missile dropkick variation of the Hart Attack. Lightning pinned Britain.

Arden presented the belts to Thunder & Lightning. He said they could hold them for now, but he and one of his brothers would get them back.

(4) Bobby Hayes & Terry Lawler & Alexander the Great beat Air Paris & David Young & Ron Simmons (with Christy Hemme) in 19:07. Paris introduced Simmons (wearing a DAMN t-shirt) as the third man for yet another great babyface pop. This Cedartown crowd is amazing. They were psyched. Simmons manhandled Lawler in a test of strength, and none of the heels wanted to mess with him. Comedy ensued with the bad guys accidentally hitting each other when Simmon ducked. A couple of good offensive spots as well – a tandem Russian legsweep by Young and Paris and Paris with a huracanrana to the floor. The heels triple teamed Simmons in their corner, but he fought his way out. Paris moved and Lawler took a flying crotch bump onto the middle turnbuckle. The crowd popped like it was a spot they had never seen before. At 10 minutes in, the heels finally got heat on Young. Crowd got behind him right away. Emerson missed a tag due to distraction, and the crowd went nuts. Young to his knees up on Alexander’s quebrada. Very hot tag to Paris. Match broke down with Simmons going after Hayes on the outside. Inside the ring, Paris DDTed Alexander. Young turned on Paris with a lariat. Young hugged Alexander, but Paris was down and didn’t see it. Young pretended to be sorry before giving Paris the spinebuster. A complete a-hole. Alexander pinned Paris. Simmons had to keep his back turned a very long time for the finish, but it still worked just fine.

Afterwards, Young said he had no problem with Simmons. His problem was with that white trash Paris. Said they weren’t friends, never were friends and never would be friends. Paris apologized to Simmons and the people for letting them down. Simmons said Young was the one that let the people down, and Paris was still a winner in his eyes and in the eyes of the people. “There’s not one word I can give you,” Simmons added.

Paris said there was one word. Everyone knew what was coming, and Simmons did a long, dramatic pause to let it build before giving them the “DAMN!” It got a long and loud pop to close the show. Simmons thanks the fans and said this was officially it for his wrestling career.

NOTES: Simmons did a Q & A immediately after the show. He said he would continue to make wrestling appearances that included physical involvement, like throwing a punch, but there would be no more singles matches...Adam Arden canceled...Jimmy Rave is out of action with a broken nose...Purks is working on in bringing in a huge superstar for either April or May.

2011 - WWE broadcast Raw.  Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

Vince congratulates the people of Milwaukee for the Packers’ win. He is talking about an event that has more grandeur and excitement than the Super Bowl. Vince says that he is talking about Wrestlemania. Vince says that there is always something that separates every Wrestlemania from the others. Vince says that he is going to introduce the man who is the personification of what you have never seen before. He says that nobody has ever hosted a show in front of that many people. There is only one person who can pull that off. We will meet the guest host of Wrestlemania next week.

Randy Orton makes his way to the ring as only Randy Orton can. We see what Randy Orton did to Husky Harris last week before Nexus could make their half-hearted way to the ring to stop Orton and help Harris.

Punk reminds Orton that he had to forfeit the title and he has not forgotten that moment. Punk says that it feels like it happened yesterday. He says that he is a patient man and he can wait. Punk says that he is not going to wait until the Elimination Chamber, he is going to eliminate Randy Orton right now.

CM Punk puts down his mic and the rest of Nexus comes out and they walk to the ring.

Orton fights off Otunga but Mason Ryan takes Orton down and then it is a three on one attack while Punk slowly enters the ring.

Punk says that Truth and Orton are weakened now.

Ryan says ‘two down . . . three to go’.

We go to commercial.

We are back with the WWE Rewind: Jerry Lawler becoming the number one contender last week on Raw.

It is time for Cole to become more unbearable because The Miz is coming to the ring with his personal lapdog Alex Riley.

Before Miz makes it to the ring, we take a look back at what CM Punk did to John Morrison.

Miz says that as he saw the Raw Rumble unfold last week, he only had one thought on his mind. Jerry . . . Jerry . . . Jerry. He says that he was pulling for Lawler. Miz says that he would like Jerry Lawler to come into the ring so he can give him the praise that Jerry deserves. Miz tells Alex to leave the ring so Lawler is not intimidated.

Miz asks Jerry if he knows why Miz was rooting for him. Lawler says that Miz probably thought he would be the easiest win. Miz says that everyone is an easy victory. He says that he could have beaten everyone in that match. He says that they are mirror images of each other. When Jerry was young, he had a mouth that was legendary. Whether it was Andy Kaufman or insulting Bret Hart’s mom, people were listening. Miz says that he has patterned his career after Jerry.

Miz says that he became a modern day Jerry Lawler. He is the center of attention, he is on talk shows, and he is the WWE Champion. He is something that Lawler will never be.

Lawler says that he would hate to look in the mirror and see a haircut like Miz’s. He says that he has had a big mouth his entire career, but Jerry tells Miz that he can back up what he says. Lawler says that if Miz is a ‘Modern Day Jerry Lawler’ he does not know Jerry that well. Jerry says that he didn’t pattern his career after anyone because he is an original.

Miz agrees and says that Jerry is an original cheap shot artist and he has footage to support it. We see what Jerry did to Ted DiBiase last week on Raw.

Miz says that is equivalent to a sucker punch.

Lawler says that was like a sucker punch because he thinks that Miz is a sucker. Lawler says that everyone thinks that Miz sucks too. Lawler tells Miz that he is right. Not everything that comes out of his mouth is like poop, manure, or compost. He has never been the WWE Champion and he has never competed at Wrestlemania. He tells Miz and everyone else that they have no idea what it would be like for him to be WWE Champion and compete at Wrestlemania. Jerry says that he has been in Sports Entertainment for 40 years and he is not going to let it pass him by. He says that after he wins the title at the Elimination Chamber pay per view, he is going to say that he is going to Wrestlemania.

Miz says that is where Jerry is wrong. After the match in two weeks, the only thing that the WWE Universe will hear is ‘I’m the Miz . . . and I’m ‘ . . .

Interrupted by Jerry Lawler saying ‘awful’. The crowd joins in. Miz tries to punch Lawler but Jerry avoids him and punches Miz. Riley tries to attack Lawler but Jerry throws him over the top rope to the floor. Lawler punches Miz but Ted DiBiase comes out to help Miz. Daniel Bryan comes out and goes after Ted and Miz to help Lawler.

All of this is interrupted by ‘that noise’ and Michael Cole climbs Mount Irrelevant to tell Lawler and Bryan that they will be facing Miz and Ted DiBiase right now.

Alex Riley joins Cole at the announce table.
