THIS DAY IN HISTORY: CACTUS JACK WINS A LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE

December 30th

On this day in history in ....

1984 - Terry Taylor defeats Eddie Gilbert for the AWA International Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee, ending Gilbert's second reign.

1988 - Cactus Jack (using the name Cactus Jack Manson) defeats Eric Embry in Dallas, Texas for the World Class Championship Wrestling World Light Heavyweight Title, ending Embry's fourth reign with the belt.  Yes, you read that right.  Cactus Jack, who was somewhere in the 265 range at the time, was Light Heavyweight champion.  The story was that Cactus claimed to be a Light Heavyweight, while Embry, wanting to get a piece of Cactus, agreed to waive the weight limit for the title in order to get a match with him.

1989 - King Cobra defeats Jerry Lawler for the USWA Unified World Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee, ending Lawler's third reign with the belt.

1997 - During a live edition of Raw from New Haven, Connecticut, Jeff Jarrett defeats Barry Windham to win the NWA North American Heavyweight Title.  This was part of a storyline where the "NWA", led by Jim Cornette and Jeff Jarrett, was invading WWE.  The previous North American champion, Reckless Youth, voluntarily vacated the belt so it could be used in the angle.  Jarrett would only defend the belt a few times, and by the beginning of March, the storyline was dropped and Jarrett vacated the title.
