On this day in history in ....
1993 - WCW held their Superbrawl III Pay-per-view in Asheville, North
Carolina at the Civic Center. Here are the results of the show:
- Brian Pillman & Steve Austin defeated Erik Watts & Marcus Alexander
Bagwell.
- 2 Cold Scorpio defeated Chris Benoit.
- Davey Boy Smith defeated Bill Irwin.
- Cactus Jack defeated Paul Orndorff in a Falls Count Anywhere match.
- The Rock N' Roll Express defeated SMW Tag Team Champions The Heavenly Bodies
(Tom Pritchard & Stan Lane) via disqualification.
- United States Champion Dustin Rhodes defeated Maxx Payne via disqualification.
- Barry Windham defeated The Great Muta to win the NWA World Heavyweight Title.
- WCW World Champion Big Van Vader defeated Sting in a "White Castle Of
Fear" Leather Strap match. The match was hyped with vignettes of
Sting going into the mountains to find Vader and challenge him to the match,
which turned out to just be a regular strap match. It also had nothing to do
with square hamburgers.
1999 - WCW held their Superbrawl IX Pay-per-view in Oakland, California
at the Oakland Arena. The show saw Rey Mysterio lose his mask in a tag match
with Kevin Nash. Several days later, Mysterio was scheduled to have a mask vs.
mask match with Psicosis in Mexico. When Mysterio unmasked in WCW, then showed
up for his match with Psicosis wearing his mask, there was a huge outcry from
fans who felt Mysterio was disgracing his career and reputation by wearing the
mask again after losing it. Here are the results of the show:
- Booker T defeated Disco Inferno.
- Chris Jericho defeated Perry Saturn via countout.
- WCW Cruiserweight Champion Billy Kidman defeated Chavo Guerrero, Jr.
- Chris Benoit & Dean Maklenko defeated Barry Windham & Curt Hennig in a
double-elimination WCW World Tag Team Title Tournament match.
- Barry Windham & Curt Hennig defeated Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko to
win the WCW World Tag Team Title in the last match of a double-elimination
tournament.
- Kevin Nash & Scott Hall (subbing for Lex Luger) defeated Konnan & Rey
Mysterio Jr. when Nash pinned Mysterio. As a result, Mysterio was forced to
unmask, and would wrestle without his mask in the U.S. until the end of WCW. If
Nash and Hall had lose, Miss Elizabeth would have had her head shaved bald.
- WCW World Television Champion Scott Steiner defeated Diamond Dallas Page.
- Scott Hall defeated Roddy Piper to win the United States Title.
- Bill Goldberg defeated Bam Bam Bigelow.
- WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan defeated Ric Flair.
2000 - Another chapter in the Monday Night Wars was written, as Nitro, headlined by Hulk Hogan defeating Lex Luger in a steel cage match, earned a 2.8 cable rating, while on Raw, a show main evented by Triple H, The Big Show & X-Pac vs. The Rock, Cactus Jack & Kane did a 5.9.
2005 - Chris Masters makes his WWE television debut during an edition of Raw from State College, Pennsylvania, defeating Steven Richards with the Masterlock. During the match, Masters attempts a Polish Hammer and breaks an orbital bone in Richards' face.
2006 - During the Smackdown taping in Richmond, Virginia, Smackdown General Manager Theodore R. Long announced that despite losing his Wrestlemania title opportunity to Randy Orton on No Way Out, Rey Mysterio would still get a chance to become World Champion, making World Champion Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio in a Triple Threat match at Wrestlemania.
