August 23rd

On this day in history in ....

1929 - Dick Shikat defeats Jim Londos for the NWA (National Wrestling Association) World Heavyweight Title in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Shikat already held the the New York version of the World Heavyweight Title.

1982 - Bruiser Brody defeats B. Brian Blair for the Florida Heavyweight Title in West Palm Beach, Florida.  However, the decision was reversed due to Brody cheating, and the title was held up.

1993 - Jeff Jarrett defeats Vampire Warrior for the USWA Southern Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee.  This starts Jarrett's ninth reign with the belt.  During this reign, the title was renamed the USWA Heavyweight Title.

1999 - During Raw in Ames, Iowa, Triple H defeats Mankind for the WWF World Heavyweight Title, ending Mankind's third and final title reign after only one day (he had won it the previous night at Summerslam).  This also marks the first WWF World Heavyweight Title victory for Triple H.  On that same show, Mark Henry defeats Jeff Jarrett for the WWF European Heavyweight Title. The show would earn a 5.9 rating.

Over on WCW Nitro from Las Vegas, Nevada, Barry & Kendall Windham defeat Harlem Heat for the WCW World Tag Team Title, ending Heat's eighth run with the belt. The show also saw WCW Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Sting end in a no contest, and a concert by KISS, as the group performed and then introduced their wrestler, The Demon (played by Brian Adams, later to be taken over by Dale Torborg). The show would earn a 2.9 rating.
