THIS DAY IN HISTORY: DAVID VON ERICH AND CURT HENNIG PASS AWAY

By Buck Woodward on 2007-02-10 08:00:00

February 10th

On this day in history in ....

1973 - Terry Funk defeated Johnny Valentine for the Missouri State Heavyweight Title, ending Valentine's reign at less than a month.

1978 - Chavo Guerrero defeats WWWF World Champion Superstar Billy Graham in Los Angeles, California when the match is stopped due to Graham's excessive bleeding.  However, because there was not a pinfall or submission, Graham was allowed to retain the title.

1984 - David Von Erich (Adkisson) died of acute enteritis at the age of 25 in Tokyo, Japan. Von Erich was in the country for a tour with All Japan Pro Wrestling, but was found dead in his hotel room before the first show of the tour. There has been great speculation and many stories regarding his death, with many believing that drugs were involved. However, the official cause of death, on record, is acute enteritis, an intestinal ailment.

1985 - The Junkyard Dog defeats "Dr. D" David Shultz at a house show in San Diego, California in what would turn out to be Shultz' last appearance ever with the WWF, as he would be fired the next night.  While many feel Shultz was fired because of the incident (and subsequent lawsuit) where Shultz hit 20/20 reporter John Stossel, in truth the final straw for Shultz with the WWF was when he got into an argument backstage with Mr. T and almost got into a fight with the TV star.

1990 - New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Japan Pro Wrestling combined to present the "Super Fight" show at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, drawing 63,900 fans. Results from the show saw:
- Takayuki Iizuka defeated Osamu Matsuda.
- Naoki Sano & Pegasus Kid (Chris Benoit) defeated Jushin Liger & Akira Nogami.
- Tatsutoshi Goto, Hiro Saito & Norio Honaga defeated Kuniaki Kobayashi, Hiro Hase & Kantaro Hoshino.
- Brad Rheingans defeated Victor Zangiev.
- Steve Williams defeated Salman Hashimikov.
- Masa Saito defeated Larry Zbyszko to win the AWA World Heavyweight Title.
- Jumbo Tsuruta & Yoshiaki Yatsu defeated Kengo Kimura & Osamu Kido.
- Genichiro Tenryu & Tiger Mask II (Mitsuharu Misawa) defeated Riki Choshu & George Takano via countout.
- IWGP Champion Big Van Vader vs. Stan Hansen ended in a double countout.
- Koji Kitao defeated Bam Bam Bigelow.
- Antonio Inoki & Seiji Sakaguchi defeated Shinya Hashimoto & Masahiro Chono. Lou Thesz was the guest referee.

1993 - Several weeks after losing a "Loser Leaves WWF" match to Curt Hennig, Ric Flair wrestled his final match for the company, losing to WWF World Champion Bret Hart in Dortmund, Germany.  It would be almost a decade before Flair would return to the WWF/E.

2001 - In St. Paul, Minnesota, Hardcore Holly pinned Steve Blackman during a Three Way match with Raven to win Raven's WWF Hardcore Title. This marked the fifth Hardcore title win for Holly. However, under the 24/7 rule, Raven pinned Holly moments later to get the title back, starting his sixth Hardcore title reign.

2001 - Lobo defeated Wifebeater & Lord Everett Devoe in a three-way match for the Combat Zone World Ironman Title

2003 - Former AWA World Champion Curt Hennig, known as "Mr. Perfect" in his WWF days, was found dead in a Florida hotel room. Hennig was in Florida for a show, and when he did not arrive at the building, Dave "Cuban Assassin" Sierra went to his hotel room. When Hennig did not answer the door, Sierra had a maid open up the room, and Hennig was found lying on the bed. The Tampa Medical Examiner's office announced the official cause of death was "acute cocaine intoxication". Hennig was 44 years old.
