Dave and Mike, love the site. I’m writing this the morning after MITB. There was a missile attack at the airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia yesterday, as of now a dozen dead and over 300 injured. (Allegedly the Houthis said they intentionally targeted civilians). WWE is supposed to hold Crown Jewel in Riyadh in 27 days. What do they do at this point? I know they always claim they have a back up plan. If I were talent I would be even more anxious about going now. Let alone Wrestlemania next year.
I haven’t gotten any official comment other than that the company is aware of what happened on Sunday in Saudi Arabia. Unless I missed it, they did not mention Crown Jewel on the PLE while they did mention War Games (though that was to talk about ticket sales). If I were running WWE, I would be well into planning to move the event. The region is too scary right now. Is WWE thinking that way? I can’t say but if it were me as a wrestler, I wouldn’t go over there, even if it cost me my job. If the Houthis want to make a statement against the US, bombing that event would seem to fall into how they are thinking right now. It’s too scary for me to go there right now. Depending on how things go, WrestleMania could need to be moved as well.
Over the last several years I've found WWE gradually using the announce table in matches more frequently to the point where it happens now on every show. I don't mean using it until it collapses, but using it as a weapon or attempting to. I think this is one of those things where if scaled back significantly, it would be more eventful and meaningful when it is used. Do you think it is used too frequently? Would you revive the rule where a wrestler would be disqualified putting their opponent through it?
I agree, it’s become a trope and if you do something all the time it loses its effectiveness. I wouldn’t bring attention to the overuse. I would just tell the wrestlers and producers to stop using it without permission.
I already feel WarGames has run its course, and falls into the same problem HIAC and TLC had as PLEs. They're forced to use a gimmick match because of the PLE schedule. Additionally, the match has no stakes. In 2004, WWE had a creative idea where they had a traditional 4-on-4 elimination match where the winning team's members got to be Raw's GM each week. I think reviving this idea would be interesting because it keeps the traditional elimination match, it has stakes, and could be used to really shake up Raw throughout December with wrestlers making the decisions and changes. What are your thoughts on reviving that idea? Do you feel WarGames has run its course?
War Games hasn’t run its course to me. It’s just that the booking hasn’t been good enough to make me care about it the way that I did when the booking was good. I would prefer to just fix the booking issue because when War Games is built to well, it’s great.
It just kinda hit me, did Trips' booking go down hill about the time Road Dogg left? Maybe he was the filter HHH needed?
He is a very talented guy that I am sure HHH misses. With that said, the booking had started going south long before Dogg earlier this year.
