While appearing on The Today Show this morning to promote Matchbox - The Movie, John Cena confirmed that WWE will present The John Cena Classic this December.
When asked about the chances of him returning to the ring for WWE, Cena commented, "There is no chance that I’ll perform again physically, and the WWE and I had a conversation about that. We thought at 49 it was the right time to step away. I put 23 years of physical service into the business. And now, this year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So, we’re gonna do an event based off of all the memory, all the nostalgia, and the IP and the core values of the character, which is me: Hustle, Loyalty, Respect, Perseverance, virtue, you know, overcoming the odds, and giving the—the vote to the people. Our audience is gonna decide our champion on that night. So, it’s a really unique live event. I don’t even know if it’s gonna work, but we’re still taking bold chances in the WWE space, and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic."
Earlier this year, PWInsiderElite.com had reported WWE was targeting the end of the year for the first-ever event.
