Last night at Hitmans Bar we hosted a night with Bret doing a live commentary of his match with Owen from WrestleMania X. As promised, here’s a bit of a rundown from the night.
Bret’s son Dallas came out at the start to talk about being a kid in attendance for the match. Then talked about bit about keeping the Stampede Wrestling tradition in Calgary going by running his Dungeon Wrestling promotion out of the same Victoria Pavilion Stampede used to run (next show is Oct 30 fyi)
Bret was then introduced and talked a bit about the build up to the Owen match, bringing up originally Vince wanted Bret to feud with his other brother Bruce but Bret convinced Vince otherwise stating he thought Owen would be “devastated” if he didn’t get to wrestle Bret.
Bret mentioned how hard it was for Owen to be a heel as he was loved so much, he was just naturally a good person and his wrestling style was so fan friendly.
Bret came up with how the match played out, getting some input from Owen on some things he wanted to do, but at the end of the day it was Bret’s final call on how the match would go and what they would do.
Bret talked about sharing hotel rooms on the road with Owen and paying for them, as “Owen was clean and never caused any issues, unlike Jim (Neidhart)”
The match was then played on the tvs and paused intermittently to ask Bret on thoughts of things.
Bret mentioned he had to remind Owen a few times to do some “cheating” moves to get some heat as the heel including a mule kick between Bret’s legs which Bret said was his “favourite ball shot he ever took”
Bret acknowledged the sharpshooter was created in Japan, but he claimed he “invented reversals for the hold” and in the match that Owen “intentionally had to put the sharpshooter on wrong so Bret could reverse it and make it look believable”
At one point while they were both down, they had planned to attempt a “double sharpshooter” spot but it didn’t work out.
In the match when Owen put Bret into a camel clutch, Bret mentioned as a rib Owen put his hands in tuna fish before the match so his hands stunk so bad. Bret said Owen did that a few times when they wrestled, but wasn’t sure if he ever did that to other wrestlers, but “wouldn’t be surprised if he did”
When asked more about putting the match together, Bret said the goal of any match should be to keep the fans guessing what will happen next instead of them guessing or figuring out what is coming up next.
Bret talked about taking a spinning heel kick from Owen “I wouldn’t take that move from anyone else. Owen said to protect myself and get my hand up to keep it safe, still was a stiff kick that almost knocked out a some teeth”
When asked if there was any ever doubt about Owen winning the match, Bret said “at the end of the night I was going to win the World Title so all was good for me, so putting Owen over and making him a major heel was the goal at the time.”
Bret told Owen to give him the middle finger on the way out after the match to keep the heel heat. After the match Owen was the first one there to meet Bret, but Bret wouldn’t hug him until he “cleaned up the snot stuck to his face”
Bret talked about the plans for the rematch at Summerslam, instead of a cage match they had planned to do a ladder match, but the idea was shot down as “Shawn stole our idea and did it instead with Razor."
Bret then talked about after Owen’s heel run he wanted to make sure they “made up” in storyline as some of their kids in the family and fans really thought Owen and Bret started to hate each other which Bret didn’t like.
There was then a short Q&A with a few questions from the crowd.
One person asked if there was anyone you would love to wrestle more that you didn’t get to who would it be. Bret said his top 2 favourite opponents he wish he could have wrestled more were Mr Perfect and Owen.
Another fan asked for a funny “rib” story that Owen did, Bret joked “how much time do we have…” then told a story about Owen prank calling Stu Hart impersonating Canadian wrestler Reggie Parks who Stu trained, saying he would “stretch and out wrestle Stu” which had Stu pacing around getting upset to the point he got mad and then exclaimed “come get some, let’s see what you got.”
Another question was asked: how does Bret choose who he puts the glasses on and what is written on them? Bret said he usually looks for kids first, boys, girls, and grandmas. Bret joked that some kids he gave the shades to would immediately take them off and toss them on the ground. He would usually write on the shades who he was wrestling that night and the date of the show.
A meet and greet with fans then followed before ending the night off.
It was indeed a “once in a lifetime” event that I was honoured to be a part of celebrating Owen and hearing some of Bret’s stories and thoughts.
