Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is out today, from Marvel Comics and in addition to the lead story, there are a number of backup stories, one of which is by WWE Executive Paul Leveque using the name “Triple H”, co-written by Rob Fee (WWE's WWE Director of Character Development), with art by Ed McGuinness and Mark Farmer.
It’s a trifle of a story, only five pages, and is set when Peter Parker was a child, and his Uncle Ben bought tickets for them to go to professional wrestling matches. On the way, Ben discusses what he has seen Peter navigate so far in his life and his pride in how Peter deals with adversity. The story then flashes forward to Spider-Man attending wrestling matches in remembrance of his Uncle Ben.
The art by McGuinness and Farmer is fantastic, filled with big expressions, quiet moments, and really captures that childhood joy of getting to go see something you thought was out of reach. The story itself is lighter than air and captures a nice moment, but doesn’t really feel like a Spider-Man or a young Peter Parker story. It also suffers from being surrounded by short stories by veteran comics creators who really key into different aspects of the history of Spider-Man.
On my “Buy, borrow, or ignore” scale, it is a buy if you want some great Spider-Man stories and a celebration of the long history of the character, but if you are buying it for the Triple H written story, you can ignore it. In my opinion, it doesn’t bring anything to the table in regard to either Spider-Man or wrestling.
