Gloria Steinem, an American journalist, social activist, and leading figure of the feminist movement during the late 1960s and 1970s, passed away yesterday at the age of 92, her family announced today. Steinem gained national attention in 1963 with an investigative expose detailing the exploitative working conditions of Playboy Club waitresses, later co-founding Ms. magazine in 1972 as the first national American feminist publication created by women. Beyond her publishing career, Steinem helped establish a number of important advocacy organizations including the National Women's Political Caucus and the Ms. Foundation for Women, championing reproductive rights, equal pay and more. Steinem was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013 for her decades of work advancing gender equality.
So why are we mentioning her passing on PWInsider.com?
In 1985, during the WWF build to the first Wrestlemania, a number of specials aired on MTV, including The War to Settle the Score, headlined by Hulk Hogan vs. Roddy Piper, who was at the height of his run as a villain for the company. With Cyndi Lauper involved with the company at the time and having taken part in an angle where Piper kicked her, WWF was able to use the Lauper connection to get a number of pop culture and even political figures to weigh in on the rivalry. Steinem took part, knocking Piper and declaring he didn't deserve to wear a skirt, since he was always clad in a Scottish kilt heading to the ring.
On the special, Steinem said, "Listen, I'm here because I'm really angry at this guy. This Roddy Piper is a disgrace to rock and roll, he certainly is not fit to wear a skirt, and he's going to pay for what he's done to Cyndi Lauper."
