WWE Champion CM Punk appeared on ESPN Get Up earlier today.
On his bout with Cody Rhodes at WWE Summerslam, Punk commented, "I think you can expect me to not take it easy on my little brother Cody Rhodes, you know? Competition at the highest level. Yeah, we're friends. I don't think either of us are going to let that get in between just an old-fashioned beatdown, you know? Like, it's SummerSlam—hottest summer, hottest show of the summer. I expect to show up and walk out with the championship....it's very different. I think my job's a lot easier when I'm standing across from somebody I don't like, you know? Uh, I don't necessarily want to hurt Cody, but when the bell rings, uh, you know, unfortunately, it's the business—anything goes."
On prepping for the match, Punk said, "Oh, man. I do a lot of tape watching. Like you said, I haven't wrestled Cody in 18 years, and that was a very different Cody and it was a very different CM Punk. Uh, so I watch a lot of tape, and the gym workouts—the volume is low, the intensity is through the roof. Uh, wow, you see me right there. Wow, you guys got all the footage! You guys are so professional, I love this....hooked up with my trainer Jay Gianfrancesco, and he's put me through the paces, so he's getting me ready. He got me ready for WrestleMania, and SummerSlam will be no different."
On the Ladder Match set for the card, Punk said, "Unfortunately, I have....I would like to now knock on wood and say I will never be in a ladder match again as long as my career continues. [Laughs] Those are career-shorteners, those are car crashes, those are super dangerous. You can anticipate what your opponent's going to do, you can't anticipate what a ladder's going to do. So, anytime you have a match that's, like, surrounds, uh, furniture, it's really dangerous. I just hope, uh, I hope none of those ladies get hurt. Best of luck to them all."
