THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SHAWN MICHAELS IS STRIPPED OF HIS TITLE, ONE NIGHT ONLY, UNDERTAKER & KANE DEFEAT AUSTIN AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2006-09-27 08:00:00

September 27th

On this day in history in....

1965 - WWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino defeats Tarzan Tyler in the main event at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

1977 - Professor Toru Tanaka & Mr. Fuji defeat Larry Zbyszko & Tony Garea in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to win a tournament for the WWWF World Tag Team Championship.

1986 - The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers) defeat Eddie Gilbert & Sting to win the UWF World Tag Team Championship for the second time in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1993 - WWE announced that Shawn Michaels was being stripped of the Intercontinental Title.  Michaels had been unable to agree to terms with WWF on a new contract.  At the Raw taping that night in New Haven, Connecticut, Razor Ramon and Rick Martel were the final two participants in a battle royal.  The two then had a singles match (shown the following week) to fill the title vacancy, with Ramon getting the win with the Razor's Edge to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

1997 - WWF held their "One Night Only" Pay-per-view. Live at the NEC Arena in Birmingham, England, the event was only available in Europe (and for some reason, parts of Canada). An edited version of the show was offered months later in the U.S. as a discounted PPV. Here are the results:
- Hunter Hearst Helmsley defeated Dude Love (Mick Foley) with a Pedigree.
- Tiger Ali Singh defeated Leif Cassidy (Al Snow) with a top rope bulldog.
- WWF World Tag Team Champions The Headbangers (Mosh & Thrasher) defeated Los Boriquas (Savio Vega & Miguel Perez Jr.) when Mosh pinned Perez with a top rope splash.
- The Patriot defeated Flash Funk (2 Cold Scorpio) with a full nelson slam.
- The Legion Of Doom defeated The Godwinns when Hawk pinned Phineas after the Doomsday Device.
- Vader defeated Owen Hart with a powerslam as Owen jumped off the top rope at him.
- WWF World Heavyweight Champion Bret Hart defeated The Undertaker via DQ after Undertaker hit the referee.
- Shawn Michaels defeated Davey Boy Smith to win the WWF European Heavyweight Title. This marked one of only two occasions where the European Title actually changed hands in Europe (three if you include the initial title tournament). After interference from Rick Rude, Hunter Hearst Helmsely, and Chyna, Michaels worked on Davey Boy's injured leg with a figure four leglock until Davey Boy passed out, and the referee ruled that he couldn't continue. Allegedly, Smith was supposed to go over in this match, and had been doing press in England dedicating the win to his cousin, who was battling cancer, but Michaels pulled a power play the day of the show and changed the result to a win for him.

1994 - A tournament was held in Osaka, Japan for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title, which had been vacated several days earlier when champion Jushin Liger had suffered a broken ankle. Here are the results of the tournament:
First Round:
Norio Honoga defeated Gran Hamada.
Black Tiger (Eddie Guerrero) defeated El Samurai.
Shinjiro Ohtani and Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) received byes to the semifinals.
Semifinals:
- Norio Honaga defeated Shinjiro Ohtani.
- Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) defeated Eddie Guerrero.
Finals:
- Norio Honaga defeated Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title.

1998 - WWF held their Breakdown Pay-per-view in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.  Here are the results:
Sunday Night Heat:
- Golga defeated Headbanger Mosh.
- The Hardy Boyz defeated Men's Teioh & Sho Funaki.
- 8-Ball defeated Billy Gunn.
PPV Matches:
- Owen Hart defeated Edge by reversing a sunset flip when Edge was distracted by someone in the crowd (Christian).  Edge then followed the person in the crowd out of the building.  This was the WWF television debut of Christian.
- Al Snow & 2 Cold Scorpio defeated Brian Christopher & Scott Taylor when Snow pinned Taylor with the Snowplow.
- Marc Mero defeated Droz with the Shooting Star Press.
- Bradshaw defeated Vader in a No Holds Barred match after two Clotheslines From Hell and a neckbreaker.
- D'Lo Brown defeated Gangrel with the Sky High after Mark Henry interfered.
- The Rock defeated Ken Shamrock and Mankind in a steel cage match by pinning Shamrock after Mankind had hit him with a chair and was trying to climb out of the cage. You could win the match by climbing out of the cage or scoring a pinfall.
- Val Venis defeated Dustin Runnels with a Money Shot.
- X-Pac, Billy Gunn & Road Dogg defeated Jeff Jarrett & Southern Justice when Gunn pinned Dennis Knight with the Fameasser.
- The Undertaker and Kane defeated WWF World Champion Steve Austin when both men pinned him following a chokeslam.  The match was set up by Vince McMahon to get the belt off of Austin, as Undertaker and Kane were not allowed to beat each other in the match.  As a result of the finish, the title was held up, and Vince McMahon left with Austin's "Smoking Skull" belt.
