Punk/Reigns - That segment was everything I thought it would be. Both guys were dropping some serious truth bombs and the animosity was quickly established and very palpable. I love that Roman didn’t drag it out for weeks, he made his choice. And I would suppose you’d be pleased that they didn’t go into the tired “I respect you“ trope. I immediately thought of you after Roman’s closing remarks “I hate you and I’ve always hated you“. Did you enjoy it ? I thought that segment was gold.
I loved the segment too. It was gold on the mic. We have two of the best, most bad ass talkers of all time in a program. It got off to an amazing start. A program built around hatred works for me.
You mentioned in my previous Q&A that they still need to sell tickets for WM; do you think that made them get right to it with Roman’s choice, so the fans have their main event in place?
I do indeed. They now have a few months to really heat this up and try and convince people to sell a kidney so that they can afford to be there in Las Vegas to see it live.
Oba Femi destroys Erik & Ivar - Oba is a beast, we know that, and he’s being established on the main roster as such. I also understand that the War Raiders aren’t super high up on the totem pole. But damn, could they not have fed a couple of local guys to Oba? One guy destroying a team like that just seems so Vince-like, and I really hoped they had gotten away from stuff like that.
I love Oba, let me say that first. I felt the same way that you did. Erik and Ivar got destroyed by one guy and yes, it was very Vince-like. How can we take them seriously now when one guy destroyed them? It hurt them a lot.
Now, I have no problem with CM Punk vs Roman Reigns in 2026, nor do I have a problem with it happening at Wrestlemania as a marquee match. What I DO have a problem with is the match being for a World title. It just can't see how it benefits anyone to have either man on top again, Roman especially as a part timer, although Punk as a full timer can drop it to the next anointed one. But they are not alone - Becky Lynch is a champion and The Usos are also champions in 2026 when there is a whole tranche of talent ready to carry the company forward. How is the company supposed to move forward when Triple H keeps reverting to Vince's old habit of repeatedly putting his eggs into the same basket?
When the storytelling and character building was meh, at best, Vince always found himself in the position to lean on the established names at Wrestlemania time. The first few years of Paul Levesque’s booking made me think that they may be a thing of the past. But, since March of last year he has become a lot more Vince like in not being able to really develop younger stars or tell many stories that are interesting and make them more important. So yes, it sure does seem like he is now following the old Vince formula of relying on the older talents that are over. With that said, it’s still possible that after we get past WrestleMania those established names can help make new stars. I hope that it does because the product was a lot more fun in the beginning of Levesque’s run.
