Beyond Wrestling “Wildest Dreams”
1/23/25 Somerville, MA
Arts at the Armory is a fun venue that I like a lot. It’s great to be back here. That said, it’s a chilly night in Somerville, so let’s see some wonderful action before we all get pummeled with snow.
Spotlight Match: Tyree Taylor vs. Gabriel Skye
It is BONKERS that this is the Spotlight Match. These two are gonna f*** each other up. Skye unloaded hard shots that stun Taylor. Tyree sends Gabe flying repeatedly. This is what I want to see. They both bring the fight, but Tyree finally catches Gabe springing off the ropes and hits the Brooklyn Zoo Bomb for the three. Good stuff.
Match 1: Oxx Adams vs. Big Boofa Dezmond Cole
Oxx big. Boofa small. Big Oxx strong. Boofa fast. Boofa fly. Oxx catch Boofa. Smash smash smash. BRG at ringside. BRG bad and cheats. Oxx smash Boofa more. Cole escapes a torture rack and starts to roll, but Oxx grabs him up in a deep bear hug. Boofa keeps coming back, but BRG interferes AGAIN. Cole with the turnbuckle superkick, falling German Frogsplash combo! Oxx kicks out! He hits a chokeslam and puts a cherry on it with a sit-out powerbomb for the three. Big win for the big man.
Match 2: Stetson Ranch (Steven Stetson, Brian Morris & Bobby Casale) vs. Big Business (Big Bacon Brad Hollister, Love Doug & TJ Crawford) (Flip a Coin Challenge)
So what is a Flip a Coin Challenge? This is three singles matches, and the winner of the coin flip picks the matches. Stetson calls it… and loses! Big Business makes the matches! In particular… Doug is making them!
TJ vs. Bobby
TJ seems to be having some trouble with Casale early on. He fires up after Bobby chops him up. TJ almost put to sleep after he’s caught on the ropes. But he stuns Bobby and puts the lights out with a basement Silver Bullet for the three!
Bacon vs. Morris
Morris runs in on Bacon, trying to get an advantage. Hollister endures and hits a slingshot powerslam for a near fall. Stetson is furious as Morris is about to make this 0–2 for the Ranch, and Bacon hits the Tornado Jackhammer to make that a reality.
Doug vs. Stetson
Doug goes right at Steven with a handful of flower petals! Stetson starts to bully Doug and try to at least regain some honor for the Ranch! TJ leads the spelling chants that rally Doug back into the fight! Morris tries to interfere, but TJ picks a fight. Ref Gina is distracted, and Stetson rolls up Doug and stacks him deep for the three! There’s some dissension between Doug and the others because clearly the brawl they started led to this finish. I do think Big Business wins, though, 2 falls to 1. But the Ranch can’t count, so they celebrate. Doug leaves TJ and Bacon behind.
Match 3: Kylie Alexa vs. Aaron Rourke
This is precisely what I want this to be. A lot of preening punctuated with a lot of violence. What Kylie lacks in size, she makes up for in viciousness and mean-girl attitude. Rourke keeps trying to put her away, but she keeps kicking out and landing more offense. A Destroyer won’t keep Rourke down. The Dimepiece finally catches her with a standing cloverleaf, swings her around in it, and gets the tap-out! Fantastic match.
Before Rourke can celebrate, Oxx Adams comes out and lays him out with a chokeslam. BRG is out here too to gloat. Boooooo!
Match 4: Liviyah vs. Kaitlyn Marie
Kaitlyn is big mad that she went from Gabby Forza to Liviyah in terms of opponents. Liv ain’t standing for that disrespect. Kaitlyn throws all her assets into the fight, pummeling Liv. Liv finally avoids a Vader Bomb and fires up. Side Russian into a crossface, but Marie gets to the ropes! She tries that Vader Bomb again, but Liv bombs her off the corner, and Kaitlyn stays down for the three!
Match 5: Miracle Generation (Dustin Waller & Kylon King) vs. Wrench & Resolve (Jake Gray & Erik Chacha) vs. StarStruck (Channing Thomas & Anthony Greene) vs. Mythical Ones (Ichiban & Brando Lee)
No one likes Miracle Generation, and so this starts like a 6-on-2, but then everyone remembers there’s a proper match here and the chaos begins. There’s no tagging; this is a full-on tornado. All four teams trying to come out on top, landing every tandem move in their arsenals! Jake Gray seems to have disappeared… StarStruck and the Mythical Ones go toe to toe after Miracle Generation gets ejected again! Dustin Waller takes out Erik Chacha on the stage! All the teams brawl to the floor, dives all around! Jake Gray off the balcony to the floor!!! Chacha is back, and they have the pin on Dustin, but Kylon pulls ref Gina out! Jake eats the Lethal Injection, but ref Gina refuses to count! She kicks Kylon low! StarStruck takes advantage and rolls up Dustin, and Gina fast-counts to get them the win! Big pop for this crazy finish.
But we’re not done! Oxx Adams comes out to destroy Wrench & Resolve. “This is fun,” chirps BRG as they leave again.
Match 6: Bobby Orlando (c) vs. Eye Black Jack vs. DJ Powers (for the Wrestling Open Championship)
Both these guys have failed in individual attempts to capture the Open title against Orlando. Last night, they went to a time-limit draw to make this a triple threat. Powers wipes out Jack immediately with a Claymore. Orlando gives Powers a taste of why he lost a few weeks back. Jack back in and wants some too. Orlando is definitely able to control his opponents mostly in these one-on-one scenarios, but it’s when they briefly team up that Bobby is in trouble. Jack and Powers finally come to blows when they stop each other from pinning Bobby. Jack does a double Samoan drop! That doesn’t end it, though! Bobby nearly gets the three when he catches Powers sleeping with a sick Trick Cutter! The end comes with a series of top-rope dives where Bobby lands the Dab Elbow on Powers to end the sequence and get the three!
Match 7: Fancy Ryan Clancy vs. Jonathan Gresham (Modern Age Grappling Match)
This is Gresham’s first match back after a series of serious health issues last year. He has a hell of a test against Clancy. Huge pop from the crowd and a welcome-back chant! This is six five-minute rounds. Only traditional wrestling rules apply. One warning before you get DQ’d. This would have been fine with Clancy a year ago, but he’s bitter now, so I’m sure he’s gonna cheat.
Round 1: “Let’s see what you got, old man,” says Clancy. Uh oh. We’re going full chess match in round one as Clancy tries to figure out how to attack the Octopus in a way he can’t defend. Gresham grapples, slips, reverses, and kips up to prove that he is VERY MUCH recovered. As the time expires, Clancy hits a cheap shot. There’s the Clancy we know lately.
Round 2: Clancy tries to bait Gresham with a “free shot” while the clock is running, but Gresham picks the leg and we’re back in the graps. Clancy spends a lot of time in pain or trying to find an answer to this puzzle he’s faced with tonight. They trade takeover attempts and wind up over the top to the floor. They get back into the ring, but, like last round, Clancy uncorks another closed fist as time expires! Have ANY of these been official warnings?!? No. The ref didn’t see them.
Round 3: Gresham really wants to deck Clancy… but the ref won’t let him. Clancy with another closed fist, but the ref sees it this time. FINALLY a warning! But the damage is done, and Clancy is staying on top of Gresham, with strikes and neck cranks. Gresham fighting from behind underneath for much of this round. But he finally escapes and decks Clancy hard. They both have one warning! Gresham gets the Octopus Stretch on as time expires. Clancy saved by the clock.
Round 4: Clancy’s looking hurt coming out of his corner. His wrist is clearly bothering him, and it’s becoming an issue as he tries to hold Gresham in place. Furious back-and-forth pin attempts. Gresham finally locks a headscissors and locks the leg and traps Clancy’s shoulders to the mat for the three!!!!
Clancy is distraught. Gresham offers the handshake, but Clancy shoulder-checks him on the way out. I’m half expecting Oxx Adams to come ruin things… but here’s A-Game Joseph Alexander? He points out that Clancy is very good… but he’s disrespectful. A-Game is a better representation of this current crop of young wrestlers. Alexander has been rehabbing an injury he suffered at Open 200, but he says he found inspiration in Gresham matches. And he had to come tonight to SEE the Octopus in action. And after this match, Alexander knows that he can beat Gresham. So when he’s cleared? He wants a match with Gresham in February in Cranston! Gresham accepts! This promo kind of dragged, but Alexander was clearly feeling the moment for himself.
Main Event: Krule (c) vs. Gabby Forza (for the IWTV Championship)
Can Gabby take the IWTV title from the monster who defeated her husband, Bear Bronson, on New Year’s? Krule tries the one-armed choke, but Gabby shoves the monster right to the mat! AA to Krule! Another! She tries a third, but can’t get there… she slips a chokeslam… SPEAR! Krule to the floor and grabs a chair, Gabby grabs it and pummels him with the steel! I guess this is very REF’S DISCRETION. Krule is right back up and grabs a door. Gabby flying right at Krule. She is not letting up. Spear after spear! Krule finally knees her in the face, and a chokeslam cuts the onslaught off. He tries a suplex into a door, but Gabby bombs him into it and a chair. Gabby tries a suplex, but Krule quickly picks her up into a Scorched Earth and gets the three. Massive props to Gabby; she threw EVERYTHING at the Atrocity. Krule clearly respects the fight she brought as he leaves her there without any follow-up.
And HERE COMES OXX TO ATTACK GABBY. Krule immediately heads back into the ring to break it up. He stares down Oxx, who clearly wants a piece of the IWTV title scene. Maybe in February, he gets what is coming to him. At the very least, BRG will.
Very solid show tonight. A high-energy crowd that filled in nicely with varied styles of action from match to match. I covered the first couple of Terminus shows, so I was well aware of the “Modern Age Grappling” rules, but I really liked it applied to a rounds match… and also as the only match like it on the card. In this way, it really worked. From the sheer chaos of the tag match to the violent drama of Gabby vs. Krule. I told Denver Colorado (who was on the call solo tonight) that this felt like the best put-together show at a non-regular venue that Beyond has done in a LONG time.
