The Ogden Legion Hall, which housed the Stampede Wrestling revival events in 1999 through 2001 as well as the Stu Hart 88th Birthday Celebration in 2003 in Southeastern Calgary, has been torn down, PWInsider.com has learned.
Formerly a meeting place for Royal Canadian Legion 154, the venue was once a center for local events, including professional wrestling and curling, but that declined following a sale of the property in 2012, according to the CBC.
The city of Calgary called for the demolition of the building, citing it in memos as a “hotspot for crime and disorder,” and it was now taking action. Utilizing Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, which authorizes municipalities to demolish private properties under specific circumstances, primarily when a building poses a safety hazard, the building was torn down over the last several weeks. The final straw for the push to raze the building politically was a fire on the premises last month. While the city handled the demolition, the owner of the property will be forced to foot the bill.
During that era for Stampede, the venue hosted matches involving Natalya Neidhart, Bruce Hart, TJ Wilson, Harry Smith, Jack Evans, Rick Titan, Tiger Khan, Johnny Devine, Apocalypse aka Victor of the Ascension, and Teddy Hart, among others.
The 88th Stu Hart Birthday Celebration in May 2003 was headlined by The Stampede Bulldogs, Harry Smith & TJ Wilson defeating AJ Styles and The Black Dragon, Sabu vs. Teddy Hart going to a no contest, plus Nattie Nedhart defeating Belle Lovitz as well as appearances from Bruce Hart, Johnny Devine, Principal Richard Pound and more.
Independent promotions PWA and Wrestling Supershow also ran the venue, utilizing names such as Samoa Joe, Al Snow and Raven, among others.
