I heard that SNME no longer airs on NBC, not even for Cena’s retirement match! What happened?
When WWE moved their PLEs early to ESPN, the decision was made to make Saturday Night’s Main Event a Peacock only product as it gave NBCU an exclusive for their streaming service. My take is that they hoped it would keep WWE fans subscribed to the service as the PLEs had left.
Why can’t WWE revive the mid 80’s to early ‘90’s success of the original series run with all the name recognition, nostalgia, and goodwill the SNME brand possesses?
Easy, that was then, this is now. The world of TV product consumption and delivery has changed drastically since the 80s. Like the old saying goes, the only constant in life is change.
How in the world is NXT beating AEW in ratings when AEW has a better roster, bigger TV platform, more creative freedom, and an unlimited budget? What does this say about AEW?
Some will say that it’s because NXT is on the CW and Dynamite is on TBS, but that is just excuse making. Dynamite is losing to itself when compared year over year. I think what it says about AEW is that the company is marketing to a subset of the overall wrestling fan base as opposed to being more mainstream. They want, as Tony Khan calls them, “the sickos”. When you market to the sickos, that’s what you get.
What do you speculate Tony Khan thinks that no less than SEVEN current WWE titleholders were in AEW within the last 3.5 years? Even Shawn Spears and Lexi’s King held titles in NXT! Also, Penta, Black, and Rusev are featured heavily on TV. Do these success stories entice the rest of the AEW locker room to want to jump to WWE eventually? Is this an intentional strategy by WWE to lure current AEW talent to jump?
I don’t know what goes on in the mind of Tony. He could think he showed WWE how great those talents were and they took them. If it were me, I would be figuring out how I let them all leave and do what I could to fix that problem. I think WWE looks for talent everywhere and Tony just so happens to make it easy to find people that they want to sign.
