On this day in history in ....
1980 - Stan Lane defeats Kevin Sullivan in Columbus, Georgia to win the NWA Georgia Junior Heavyweight Title.
1984 - World Class Championship Wrestling holds their Labor Day Weekend "Star Wars" card in Ft. Worth, Texas. In the main event, Kerry Von Erich & Kevin Von Erich defeat The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts) in a handicap steel cage "Loser Leaves Town" match to win the World Class Six-Man championship. Kerry is eliminated first, leaving Kevin to eliminate all three Freebirds in a row, which he does (Hayes, then Roberts, then Gordy) to win the match. Mike Von Erich was to be their partner in the championship team, but due to Mike Von Erich's shoulder injury and subsequent health problems, Kerry & Kevin would defend the belts with different partners. Here are the results from the rest of the card:
- George Weingroff defeated Kelly Kiniski.
- Chris Adams defeated Jake Roberts to win the World Class Television Title.
- Jules Strongbow & Buck Zumhoffe defeated The Long Riders.
- Michael Hayes defeated The Missing Link via disqualification.
- Kerry Von Erich defeated Bruce Reed in an arm wrestling match when Reed was disqualified.
- Iceman Parsons & Skip Young defeated Koko B. Ware & Norvell Austin via disqualification.
- Gino Hernandez defeated Mike Von Erich to win the World Class American Title.
- Killer Khan defeated Terry Gordy in a Spike match.
1989 - The Great Muta defeats Sting for the NWA World Television Title at the Omni in Atlanta, Georgia. The title was held up following a controversial match between the two at the Great American Bash PPV on July 23rd in Baltimore, Maryland in which both men's shoulders were down on the mat for the three count. This match, which ironically was not televised, settled the dispute.
1990 - Jeff Jarrett & Jeff Gaylord defeat Brian Lee & Chuck Casey (subbing for Don Harris) for the USWA Tag Team Title in Memphis, Tennessee.
1995 - Lex Luger teams with Shawn Michaels to defeat WWF Tag Team Champions Owen Hart & Yokozuna via disqualification when Yokozuna hits Luger with a flagpole during a match in New Brunswick, Canada. This would be Lex Luger's last match ever in the WWF, as he would make the surprise jump to WCW during the first edition of Nitro.
2001- During an edition of Raw in Toronto, Kurt Angle attacked WWF World Champion Steve Austin, kidnapping him and driving off with Austin in a truck that had just been given to Austin as a gift from Stephanie McMahon. Angle later had Austin tied up and threatened to throw him off a bridge unless Austin agreed to give Angle a match for the World Title at Unforgiven. Austin agreed, and Angle then shoved Austin ... into a kiddie pool of water.
2002 - During a Smackdown taping in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Chuck Palumbo proposed to Billy Gunn to be his "partner in life" following Gunn's loss to Rey Mysterio. Gunn accepted, setting up the now-infamous wedding angle between the two.
