I attended the TNA Night of Champions event at the Rec Room in Edmonton on September 25th.
It wasn’t well advertised, so attendance was low, which is a shame because it was a really cool evening.
Hosted by Santino Marella and Gia Miller, it was promoted as a Q&A with all of the TNA champions. At the start, Santino announced that “Tricky Williams” did not feel safe around TNA talent after NXT on Tuesday, but they had two substitutes: Moose and Mike Santana, which was a great swap. The rest of the panel included International Champion Steve Maclin, double champ Ash by Elegance, X-Division Champion Leon Slater, and TNA Tag Team champion Matt Hardy.
Ross Forman walked around the room taking questions from fans. There were some great ones about musical tastes, influences, and pets. Santana and Maclin both mentioned how special it was to be in Alberta because of their love for Bret Hart. Santino revealed that his first match was on the same day Owen Hart died, and he took it as a sign.
The Q&A lasted around an hour. VIPs paid an additional $80 for a group photo with all nine wrestlers. Considering that individual photos this weekend add up to about $250 for the talent doing meet-and-greets—and with Maclin, Santino, and Gia not doing photo ops—it was a great deal and a unique photo.
We also got a poster. Unfortunately, it wasn’t signed, which would be my only critique.
Overall, it was a pretty awesome start to the weekend. If they do it in other cities, I would highly recommend it.
