During an interview with Howard Stern, DC Studios Co-Head James Gunn noted that Bautista was offered the role of Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker for Gunn's vision of the character but Bautista had better financial offers to do several others films, so Gunn pivoted towards John Cena instead.
Gunn had worked with Bautista in his Hollywood breakout role of Drax in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy series.
The second season of Peacemaker, sees Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker (played by Cena) discovering an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.
Cena's portrayal of Peacemaker is the first ever live action incarnation of the character, a soldier and super-hero who loves peace so much he is willing to kill anyone, including innocents, for it. The character was originally created by the now-defunct Charlton Comics but acquired by DC in the mid-80s, mostly as a gift for the legendary Dick Giordano, who had worked on the characters before his incredible run for DC. Peacemaker was the inspiration for Watchmen's The Comedian as well.
The character was introduced in DC film The Suicide Squad, which was written and directed by James Gunn. Gunn returned to write and direct Peacemaker season one, which explored the character's background and what happens to him after the Suicide Squad film as he attempts to prevent an alien invasion.
James Gunn later took over the creative end of DC Studios with the Peacemaker character being folded into the new DCU film and television series. That interconnected universe kicked off with the recent Superman film that was released last month theatrically with Gunn writing and directing. That film leads directly into Peacemaker Season Two, with characters from the film expected to appear.
The official logline for season two: "The HBO Max series PEACEMAKER from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, created for television by James Gunn and starring John Cena, returns for its eight-episode second season THURSDAY, AUGUST 21 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO Max. In season 2, Peacemaker discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands. John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick return for season two. New cast members include Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows. James Gunn wrote all eight episodes of PEACEMAKER and directed three, including the first episode. Gunn, Peter Safran, and John Cena serve as executive producers. Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones also direct. Based on characters from DC, PEACEMAKER is produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television."
