BUFORD PUSSER MUSEUM IN TN TO REMAIN OPEN

By Mike Johnson on 2025-09-02 01:01:00

The Sheriff Buford Pusser Museum in Adamsville, TN noted it would be open this coming weekend per usual following Mark Davidson, the district attorney for Tennessee’s 25th judicial district announcing on 8/30 that after working with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, a re-examination of files regarding the death of former pro wrestler Buford Pusser's late wife Pauline Mullins Pusser determined that Pusser killed his wife and later allowed authorities to believe she was murdered by his enemies.  If Busser was still alive, the belief is there would be enough evidence to arrest Pusser and bring him before a grand jury for indictment.

Pusser wrestled in the Chicago area in the 1950s-1960s with the moniker "Bufford the Bull" while also working in a factory at the time. He mentioned wrestling in his autobiography, admitting the business was a work. He was never a top draw during his time as a wrestler. His foray into the business was before he became more famous as McNairy County Sheriff in TN.  Pusser died in a car accident several years after his wife's passing.

There have been several films based on Pusser's life, starting with a 1973 film, which was based (with creative license) on the life of Pusser.  In the original Walking Tall film, Pusser, played by Joe Don Baker, violently goes after a group of thugs who attacked him and his wife.  Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starred in a re-imagined version film back in 2004, although he did not play Pusser, but another character based on him named Chris Vaughn. In that version, Johnson played a returning United States serviceman who fights corruption in his hometown. The film brought in $57,223,890 worldwide.  There were plans for Charlotte Flair to star in a version of Walking Tall for the USA Network several years ago that never came to fruition.

The Museum opened in 1989.
