The excellent documentary on WWE Celebrity Hall of Famer Andy Kaufman, Thank You Very Much, will be released on Blu-Ray on 12/16. The film is an excellent look at Kaufman's life and career, particularly excellent during dives into his psyche and the family tragedy that really led to a lot of what he manifested into his career and the hoaxes he would try to play. Kaufman's wrestling women is talked about in the film quite a bit and there are clips from his run in Memphis Wrestling feuding with Jerry Lawler, but Lawler is not interviewed, nor is the Memphis area really discussed beyond clips showcasing where Kaufman was in that stage of his life and career. Kaufman's bit wrestling women on stage that led to the Memphis run (after Bill Apter networked Kaufman and Lawler together on the phone) is gone into quite a bit with a number of friends and associates discussing it and their thoughts on that turn of his career. It is revealed in the film that Kaufman's first exposure to theatrics was professional wrestling, as his grandmother loved it and took him to the matches at Madison Square Garden. Buddy Rogers is specifically mentioned and the film goes into Kaufman's love of playing a villain. If you were a Kaufman fan, the film is well worth watching as it features a lot of material that has never been seen before. There are no announcements for bonus features on the blu-ray release.
Another Kaufman documentary Andy Kaufman is Me had a world premiere at The Tribeca Film Festival several months back. The Rock as well as Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz are listed as among the Producers. David Letterman is credited as Executive Producer. WWE's Paul Levesque is also listed as an Executive Producer. We are told a good bulk of that film is made up of Kaufman recordings that the late comedian had made as a personal journal and for the basis of a planned book. That material will see the action recreated on screen through puppetry. Also interviewed for the project are Letterman, Carol Kane, Andy's brother Michael Kaufman and Carol Kaufman-Kerman, Andy's sister, among others. There is no word yet on a theatrical or streaming release for that project.
