THE GREAT WOJO PASSES AWAY

By Mike Johnson on 2025-08-14 13:40:00

The Toledo Blade reported today that The Great Wojo, Gregory M. Wojciechowski, who wrestled in the Mid-West, has passed away at 73 years old following "cardiac issues."

After a successful collegiate career, including competing on the United States Olympic wrestling team in 1980, Wojciechowski broke into the business under Dick the Bruiser and wrestled primarily for The Bruiser's WWA promotion, where he held the company's Championship.  He feuded with Bruiser and worked with a young Scott Steiner (working under his real name) early in Steiner's career.  He would regularly offer $10,000 to anyone who could legitimately defeat him in the ring, playing off his legitimate skills as a wrestler.

Wojo also worked dates for the WWF on several Detroit live events and made a few AWA appearances as well.  He teamed with Mr. Pogo and TNT (Savio Vega) for W*ING in Japan before retiring in the early 1990s, where he returned to coaching amateur wrestling for High Schools in the Toledo area.  He once had a wrestler vs. boxer bout against Leon Spinks.

This past June, Wojciechowski was inducted into The National Wrestling Hall of Fame.  He was inducted into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015.

PWInsider.com sends our deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of The Great Wojo.
