From Ota City, Tokyo, Japan:
Gabe Kidd's preview tag match was canceled for this card. New Japan had an update on Gabe Kidd's health status as of July 23, which said Kidd could return to compete. As of the time of this recap, no status of Gabe Kidd was reported on http://www.NJPW1972.com.
The schedule on New Japan's website has removed Gabe Kidd from the remaining G1 Climax events.

9 - Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. David Finlay
Another good match. Tanahashi hits a High Fly Flow and Finlay kicks out. Tanahashi goes for another High Fly Flow but Finlay gets his knees up. They trade strikes. Finlay goes for Overkill but Tanahashi reverses into a small package.
Tanahashi pins Finlay.

David Finlay has 2 points.
Three wrestlers remained tied for the lead at 6 points in the A Block. Hiroshi Tanahashi in second place with 4 points, but Tanahashi is in the main event position for multiple A Block nights on the tour. With Tanahashi in the main event position, New Japan can hope that fans will pay to see The Ace in his final G1 Climax. However, Tanahashi does not need to win this tournament, nor does he need a match for any title at this point. The newer stars need to be showcased right now.
It is also a disappointment that Gabe Kidd has been injured and remains the Global Heavyweight Champion. He was gaining in popularity and support from the Japan crowd and now his momentum is cut off before it could really begin.
