John Cena and Director/Writer James Gunn discussed the second season of Peacemaker, which will stream on HBO Max this August, with Entertainment Weekly. The series will be incorporated into the rebooted DC Universe.
Basically, that officially launches with the new Superman film this July and story and character elements coming out of that film will then lead into Peacemaker Season 2. Gunn is now co-leading DC Studios for Warner Bros. Discovery. In the interview, it was noted the delay for season two was due to Gunn's other commitments and that there will be a new musical theme and dance sequence for the second season, in part because a good portion of the cast from the first season had been killed over the course of that season.
Cena has described this take on Peacemaker as a "douchey Captain America" in the past.
Cena's portrayal of Peacemaker was the first ever live action incarnation of the character, a soldier and super-hero who loves peace so much he is willing to kill anyone, including innocents, for it. The character was originally created by the now-defunct Charlton Comics but acquired by DC in the mid-80s, mostly as a gift for the legendary Dick Giordano, who had worked on the characters before his incredible run for DC. The character was the inspiration for Watchmen's The Comedian as well. Cena's version debuted in Gunn's film Suicide Squad before graduating into its own series.
The new season is described as taking place "a few years" after the events of season one, although Gunn did not want to lock down exactly when in the interview.
"Thanks for your patience," Cena told EW. "I know we've had a lot of fans that have been waiting with bated breath, but the DC universe went through a bit of a shift so I'm glad we're here now, and I think everything is done in the right perspective. I'm so grateful that the audience hasn't forgotten about us, and to have James not abandon ship and hang in there for whenever the time was right to get back to work, that's really good."
The series was filmed in Atlanta last year.
