4/14 WRESTLING OPEN: RHODE ISLAND LIVE REPORT

By Adam Cardoza on 2025-04-17 08:21:00

Wrestling Open RI
4/14/25 - Cranston, RI

Spotlight Match: JGeorge vs Pedro Dones

I reiterate this from last week. I like this “no film-based BS midmatch” version of JGeorge. Dones is on the edge of some aggression as JGeorge is looking to stomp the ME into the WE man. Dones dodges a flip kick into the corner, fires up and puts JGeorge away with a running headbutt. Fun starter that the crowd (and some of these kids who have never been to a wrestling show before) clearly warmed up to.

Match 1: The Residency (RJ Rude & Rex Lawless) vs The Shooter Boys (Anthony Vecchio & Aaron Ortiz)

RJ is playing the part of team manager, letting Rex handle this grunt labor at the start of the match. And like many managers, he tags himself in to show how it’s done and fails spectacularly. Shooter Boys take RJ apart until he can get his monster back in there. Shooter Boys are getting embarrassed by the Residency until Vecchio reversed the powerbomb/backstabber finish and rolls up RJ for the surprise win!

Match 2: “The Fixer” Vinny Scalise (w/ Smart Mark Sterling) vs Seabass Finn

I guess I have to call VSK by this name now. The crowd likes Seabass but Vinny fixing our joy by beating him up. Sterling gets himself a piece of that action too. This should be over and done with after a couple minutes but Scalise pulls the pin so he can drop Finn on his head as a cherry on the top of this beatdown.

Mark Sterling grabs the mic and has an announcement that will “change Wrestling Open forever”…but he’ll tell us later tonight. Oh?

Match 3: Notorious Mimi vs Liviyah

Mimi is getting a chance for redemption after getting knocked out of the Women’s Gauntlet two weeks ago by Liv. Mimi’s reaction to losing though gives Liviyah some cause to be wary. Liviyah starts to show up Mimi and you can tell it’s frustrating her. Mimi digging into a bag of aggressive dirty tricks and the crowd doesn’t love seeing this side of our Angel…but this is also Liviyah country. They really don’t like it when Mimi pulls Liv off the top and starts to strangle her until the ref is forced to DQ her. Mimi didn’t forget..and she doesn’t forgive Liv for costing her 10k…Mimi runs Liv and the crowd down…this is a full heel turn! She goes back for more but Spike Nishimura runs down to make the save!

Match 4: Spike Nishimura vs Katrina Creed

Creed coming in with all sorts of bravado. Spike is putting that confidence to the test, taking Katrina over and holding her down. Creed is vicious though and wraps up a cattle mutilation…Spike won’t give in and a ripcord lariat gets her the win! Liked this one. Spike is a good foil to Creed’s attitude.

Dante Drago is out here. It’s worth noting that he is out here dressed as and acting as Bobby Orlando. This is some epic p*** taking from Drago. Dante offers his services to Ray Jaz since Bobby declined them last week. Orlando is out here for the match and he is definitely a little confused by what he’s looking at.

Match 5: Dante Drago vs Bobby Orlando

We have a Bobby-off? Orlando is weirded out as Drago mimics his mannerisms…and even tries to take his name??? This is some delightfully goofball s*** and the kids are eating it up. The real Orlando finally gets a grip on this mini-existential crisis, staggering Drago with a sick trick cutter and landing the dab elbow drop for the win! As silly as this was, Drago looked good in there against Orlando and maybe he did impress Ray Jaz?

Orlando has some words for Ray Jaz post-match…mostly that he dares the Jersey Legend to step in the ring with the Goatest of All Time, NEXT WEEK!

Match 6: The Gym Rats (GAL & Nick Batee) vs Waves & Curls (Traevon Jordan & Jaelyn Brandyn)

The Rats attack before W&C can fire off their confetti cannon. Everyone hates that. We demand confetti. Waves & Curls can sense that and are running the Rats ragged early. Batee runs distraction with that annoying megaphone of his and Gal capitalizes. Again, the connection Waves & Curls gets from the crowd is on another level. I kind of wish Batee had a spot where he talked smack WHILE he’s wrestling. It would feel very Rock-ish. The Rats keep Brandyn isolated for a long time, even pulling Jordan off the corner to prevent the tag at one point. But finally that tag comes and Traevon starts rolling hard as the crowd gets LOUD for this. We have one minute left! The Rats are going for the kill but Waves & Curls finally hit the wave check on Batee! But they only have 5 seconds left and Jordan can’t make the pin in time! We have a time limit draw! The Rats try a postmatch beatdown but W&C drives them off…and pose a challenge for next week: They go at it again…with NO TIME LIMIT! Batee accepts for them!

Main Event: Fancy Ryan Clancy(c) vs Brett Ryan Gosselin (for the Wrestling Open Championship)

BRG pinned Rickey Shane Page last week in a shock win to stake his claim as a bonfide threat to the Open title. This crowd clearly hates BRG, booing a stated Rhode Island native in favor of the New York champ. BRG is keeping his cool, trying to get in Clancy’s head…but The Fancy man is also remarkably good at staying chill under pressure. BRG with a baseball slide wraps Clancy around the ring post and he focuses on that back from here. Clancy trying for that signature dropkick to end this fast but Gosselin has it scouted. It is here that I remember Mark Sterling’s words from earlier and I am worried. BRG laying it in on the back and Clancy is starting to be unable to hit some of his power offense. Clancy starts to wrap BRG into the post and buckles and pulls at his legs. Gosling with a cheap throat chop and Clancy just shoves him off the top rope to the floor! Clancy’s back meets the apron again and BRG sinks into a deep Boston crab, looking for the tap out. Clancy turns that around and pulls on that ankle he worked hard on a moment ago. They both drop on a superplex! BRG is barely able to swing his arms as Clancy keeps coming. BRG collapses to the canvas as it appears his knee has given out. The Ref is completely duped and it allows BRG to hit a CLEAN superkick, a back splash and the Unprettier connects for the…CLANCY KICKS OUT! BRG can’t believe it!  He pulls Clancy up and is immediately greeted with the KO dropkick as Clancy retains again!!! Good slow burn main event and the crowd really turned it on for the finishing sequence when it was revealed to be a ruse.

Mark Sterling is up in the balcony with the mic. He asks Clancy why HE didn’t get WWEID’d like his man Bryce Donovan did. He reminds Clancy that Bryce has a “favor” to cash in with Wrestling Open officials…and he’s gonna use it for a title shot against Clancy in two weeks! Clancy getting worked up as Sterling disrespects him, allowing Vinny Scalise to blindside him! He almost gets the zip ties on his wrists before Shooter Boys and Waves & Curls run out to drive Scalise out of there!
