NEW ANDY KAUFMAN DOCUMENTARY HITTING THEATERS THIS WEEKEND

By Mike Johnson on 2025-03-25 10:30:00

Thank You Very Much, a new documentary about WWE Celebrity Hall of Famer Andy Kaufman will begin hitting theaters in select markets this weekend:

The documentary, directed by Alex Braverman and lists rock producer and Smoky Mountain Wrestling financial backer Rick Rubin as one of the executive producers, premiered at several international film festivals in 2003.

The synopsis of the documentary is "THANK YOU VERY MUCH traces the life and career of legendary performance artist Andy Kaufman, exploring the enigmatic legend’s gonzo, boundary-shattering comedy which provoked and often outraged audiences. The film reveals a nuanced understanding of what drove the mercurial performer, who inspired an entire generation of offbeat comedians and entertainers after him. The film includes rare, never before seen footage and audio recordings that shed new light on Kaufman’s creative process; including newly uncovered archival footage and intimate recollections of friends, colleagues, and family members, and interviews with Kaufman’s closest collaborators such as Bob Zmuda, Lynne Margulies, Steve Martin, Danny DeVito, and Marilu Henner. THANK YOU VERY MUCH excavates the all-too-short life and career of a comedy iconoclast whose impact is felt all the more today with the blurring of artifice and reality that defines our present age."

In 2023, another untitled documentary billed as the "first authorized" by The Andy Kaufman Estate was announced with Dwayne Johnson and Seven Bucks Productions as one of the Executive Producers.

Kaufman's love of professional wrestling and his feud with Jerry Lawler in the Memphis territory continues to live on in legend.  Their appearance on Late Night with David Letterman remains one of the most talked about moments in television history.

A fictionalized version of Kaufman's life, starring Jim Carrey, Man on the Moon, was released back in 1999.

Andy Kaufman passed away in 1984 following a battle with lung cancer.
