AS WWE 2K25 ROLLS OUT WORLDWIDE, BRYAN WILLIAMS DISCUSSES LATEST WWE GAME, THE ISLAND, NEW JACK AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2025-03-13 12:06:00

WWE 2K25 has officially launched, bringing with the latest in the WWE 2K franchise a ton of positive feedback and an array of new features.

Bryan Williams, a key developer behind the game’s programming and presentation, recently sat down with PWInsiderElite.com to discuss the latest installment in the WWE 2K franchise. As a lifelong wrestling fan, Williams shared insights on the game’s development, its innovative features, and what makes this year’s title stand out.  Inndeed, Williams’ love for professional wrestling is evident in the way he speaks about the game and the industry itself.

“Oh yeah, absolutely. Yes, I am a fan of WWE, but larger than that, I’m just a fan of pro wrestling in general. I love the grabs. I do my best to keep up with as many promotions as possible,” Williams proudly noted. “The WWE franchise being the dominant pro wrestling video game, we do our best to provide players with a true WWE experience.”

That dedication to authenticity has driven the evolution of WWE 2K25, introducing a host of new features aimed at deepening player engagement.

One of the most talked-about additions to WWE 2K25 is the return of intergender wrestling. Williams detailed the significance of bringing this feature into the 2K WWE franchise.

“By reintroducing intergender wrestling, we’re greatly expanding the matchmaking possibilities. Allowing women and men to compete against each other opens up so many more match types and gameplay experiences for players.”

Williams noted that intergender wrestling was originally greenlit during WWE 2K24’s development, but time constraints prevented its implementation. Knowing this, the development team made it a priority for 2K25 to ensure it was executed properly.

A major new feature in WWE 2K25 is The Island, an open-world environment where players can explore beyond the ring.  Roman Reigns' Island of Relevancy, indeed, becomes something tangible in the game.

“This was something that was in the works for about two years,” Williams shared. “The Island offers PvP and PvE battles, along with a developing narrative that will receive post-launch updates.”

With The Island, WWE 2K25 provides an expansive, immersive experience, making it more than just a wrestling game—it’s a full-fledged universe for players to dive into.

This year’s 2K Showcase, hosted by Paul Heyman, focuses on the Bloodline dynasty, with names like The Islanders and The Wild Samoans included, some of them making their franchise debut.

“This Bloodline Showcase blends historical matches with fantasy scenarios, bringing dream matchups to life,” Williams said.

In the game, players can recreate classic moments or set up never-before-seen battles, such as The Dudley Boyz vs. The Wild Samoans.

“Paul Heyman’s involvement extends beyond just The Bloodline; he’s a guiding voice throughout the game,” Williams added. “Shout out to Dino Zucconi and the Showcase team for an amazing job.”

As part of the Bloodline theme for the game, WWE 2K25 introduces the Bloodline Rules Match for the first time in the franchise, which was actually a late-stage development decision.

“The Bloodline Rules Match came online later than most features, but when the idea was first thrown around, the design team came together to make it happen,” Williams explained.

This match type allows competitors to summon allies, creating chaotic and unpredictable gameplay moments.

WWE 2K25’s downloadable content (DLC) roster may be one of its strongest yet, featuring legends and modern stars from across the cosmos of pro wrestling, including Jordynne Grace, New Jack, Abyss, Bull Nakano, and Penta.

“New Jack was a shock to all of us,” Williams admitted. “Nick Khan actually suggested adding him, and it took us by surprise.”

With the Motor City Machine Guns, Jesse Ventura, Tito Santana and GIULIA also included, the game offers a perfect mix of nostalgia and fresh talent.

With WWE expanding its YouTube vault to include classic WCW content, some (including yours truly) have speculated about an entirely retro WWE 2K game. Williams was optimistic but cautious, noting, “As we’ve seen with New Jack’s inclusion, nothing is outside the realm of possibility. That [sort of game] would be amazing,” he said. “We’re always aiming for the moon and beyond. Never say never.”

With WWE 2K25 now available, Williams made it clear that this is a game fans won’t want to miss.

“If you love WWE, pro wrestling, and gaming, you owe it to yourself to experience WWE 2K25,” he said. “You will not be disappointed.”
