AEW will present the 2025 Revolution PPV tomorrow in Los Angeles. Here is our take on what should go down!
AEW Champion Jon Moxley vs. Adam "Cope" Copeland
Cory: The Death Riders idea was fundamentally a good one. Mox and the others in the Blackpool Combat Club decide that AEW isn’t tough enough, so they take over. Current wrestling fans respond much more to tough people than they do heels and faces in my opinion. However, this idea got off on the wrong foot with Jon Moxley making obscure references to “someone” being behind the group. Then, when there turned out to be no one behind it, his promos have been confusing when it lays out his motivations. They were conceived as a way to bring ratings up by adding an element of danger, but I think because they simply acted like every other AEW heel group, combined with Mox not getting the core concept across, it has not worked. It’s time to get the title off of him and do something different. Get the title on Cope, have Christian Cage use his title shot and go from there.
Anthony: Pro: this likely and mercifully ends The Death Riders story. I don't think an AEW PPV main event match has ever screamed "retread" as much as this. Pro: I think Christian Cage comes out of this as the AEW World Champion. Pro: Ummmmm....that's about it. Con: This was the best AEW could come up with as a main event story. In all sincerity, the match, I'm sure, will be fine. These are 2 competent wrestlers who know what they're doing in there. Nothing about the Death Riders story has made me even the least bit excited. I see Cope winning, FTR turning on him and Christian Cage cashing in his title shot. Only thing I'm really looking forward to here is Nick Wayne's Mom celebrating.
Mike: I don't know about FTR turning but I can absolutely see AP's scenario playing out. That said, I personally expect Mox to retain.
Richard: I cannot think of a title match that I have less interest in than this one. Which entrance will Moxley walk into the arena from? Will Christian Cage cash in his contract on Sunday or will we get a fake out? I have decided to play Scrabble Golf to pick the winner of the match. Cope is an 8 while Mox is a 12 so congrats to the new champ . . . but for how long?
Kyle Fletcher vs. Will Ospreay: Steel Cage Match
Cory: Ospreay has been incredibly giving since coming into AEW, and has put over a lot of folks to help build them up. I think it’s time to just strap the rocket to him and let him go on a tear. He gets revenge on Fletcher, and it won’t hurt Fletcher if done right. Ospreay should win this one.
Mike: This should the end of the feud. Ospreay should exit victorious.
Anthony: Probably, most likely, the match of the night. Ospreay is the star en route to the World title so it makes no sense for him to lose this rubber match. Fletcher is still at that level where he can lose and still come out looking Ok in the eyes of the fans. Look for insanity to prevail here and look for Ospreay to win and get this feud off his back. Also, regardless of the outcome, I look for a TNT Title coming Fletcher's way very soon.
Richard: This is one of the matches that I think will be the best on the PPV. While I don't necessarily buy Kyle as the top star in the Don Callis Fusion Collective, he has upped his game over the last few months to be close to an equal to Takeshita. The steel cage SHOULD keep it a one on one match, but this is professional wrestling. Kyle will have a very strong showing, but Will should win this one.
AEW International Champion Konosuke Takeshita vs. Kenny Omega
Cory: Omega has framed this as him needing to prove he’s still got what it takes in a way that I don't think he CAN lose this match. Omega also started hinting about his friends abandoning him and the rest, so I can see him using the title to go after the former members of The Elite. One thing about Omega in AEW has been that he has long, well-thought-out storylines as long as he is in control, so I can see nothing but upsides in him winning. Takeshita has held the title a long time, and a loss won’t hurt him here. Omega wins.
Mike: It's time to put the spotlight back on Omega and ascend him to the center of the company.
Anthony: With Takeshita now signed to 3 different organizations AND your NJPW NEVER Openweight Champion AND the guy who humbled Omega in the ring before he got sick tells me that he's dropping it here to The Cleaner. NOT the wrong call, by the way. We're headed for an Omega/Ospreay/Okada feud VERY soon and AEW will need all hands on deck and for those hands to be spotless. Omega takes the belt here in what should be excellent.
Richard: This is the other match that I think has a chance to be the best on the PPV. This is a great matchup, but feels like a bit of a role reversal because Takeshita had to win to get the match with Omega. I think Takeshita is the man this company has to get behind, even if he is portrayed as the number two guy in the Human Thumb Band of Merry Men. Omega will do his greatest hits and Takeshita will shake them all off. Kenny with a title makes sense, but not at this time. Takeshita is too good to lose the title, unless he is going to be fast tracked to the World Title. My only fear is that they go too long for the sake of going long. Keep it 20 to 25 minutes.
AEW TBS Champion Mercedes Mone vs. Momo Watanabe
Cory: Momo is challenger of the month and hasn’t been given a good introduction because she’s just here to have a good match. Mone retains.
Mike: This should be entertaining, but Mercedes is retaining.
Anthony: There is absolutely no chance Mone loses here. Momo is good but unknown to everyone but the sickos. As they're playing loosey-goosey with who the actual top woman in AEW is, I can't fathom any situation where Mone loses. She's excellent at making her opponents look good, so Momo will get a few hope spots in at best.
Richard: The good news for this match is that AEW fans who might not be familiar with Momo can watch her on Collision. I have not seen much of Watanabe but I liked her work in the matches I have seen. There is not a chance Mone loses this one but it should be a good match. After the Harley feud, I guess Mone wants to face non-roster talents.
AEW Women's Champion Toni Storm vs. Mariah May - Hollywood Ending Match.
Cory: These two have had the best feud in AEW for the last few months, and this match should be awesome. Storm is great in the ring and May is just as good. I expect Storm to win, but I also expect this to be a barn burner.
Mike: If this is the true end of the story, it should Storm coming out on top.
Anthony: And the curtain comes down on probably the best story AEW has ever told. They found a bonafide star in Mariah May who I am certain will one day, once again, be AEW Women's World Champion. But not here, not tonight. The Timeless one will retain and move on, I think, to a feud with Mone' in sort of a title vs. title thingg.
Richard: The two times these women have met in an AEW ring for a singles match has seen a title change? Will the trend continue on Sunday night? This should be a good match and I think the trend will not continue this time and Toni will retain. Let the hatred flow in Mariah for another match later in 2025.
AEW Continental Champion Kazuchika Okada vs. Brody King
Mike: I think will be great but I don't see a title change.
Anthony: You know that expression "The House always wins"? I'm amending it to "Brody King always loses". That's not a knock on him, just the way he has been booked during almost his entire tenure in AEW. When Okada finally takes an L it should be a huge deal. They're not going to waste that on a guy they have no confidence in.
Richard: It is a PPV so we should get gives a damn Okada in the match. Brody makes his first PPV appearance since Full Gear so he is going to make the most of this moment. I just don't see Okada losing the match, but Brody will shine in this match.
AEW Tag Team Champions Bobby Lashley & Shelton Benjamin vs. The Outrunners
Cory: I love the Outrunners. They need to have more promo time because that is how their gimmick works best, but they are just a great, fun team. They will be obliterated by the Hurt Syndicate, who will retain.
Mike: No shot there's a title change here.
Anthony: The beauty here is that The Outrunners need only to get a couple of hope spots in the match. They're so freaking entertaining in their presentation, it almost makes zero sense to put the titles on them. Lashley and Benjamin are awesome and need/deserve a long, solid title run. The Outrunners will have another day someday, but this one goes to the champions
Richard: In a normal world, this match should never happen, but the Outrunners have done what so many other 'fans making this work' wrestlers have failed to do. Should they win the match? No way in hell. Will this match be entertaining? Most likely. If Lashley and Benjamin held the titles a little longer, I could see a short title run for the Outrunners, but that isn't the case.
Swerve Strickland vs. Ricochet to name top contender for AEW Championship
Cory: Swerve should win this one, but I expect these two to put on a great match as well. Ricochet has become the top heel in AEW because of this feud, but it’s time for this story to end and Swerve to hunt for the top title.
Mike: A big part of this has been about Nana and The Embassy's legacy. Swerve should get the win here.
Anthony: To me, it doesn't make a lot of sense for Strickland to lose. As entertaining as Ricochet has been, I can't see him as a credible #1 contender.
Richard: They have done a lot to make Ricochet a top talent in the company and Swerve has been a big reason. With the issues between them over the last few weeks, I hope this is a brawl more than a 'typical' Ricochet match. I don't buy Ricochet as a challenger for the World Title, despite how insignificant the title has become.
MJF vs. Hangman Page
Cory: MJF has to win this match or he’s destined to be a midcarder. His face turn got screwed up by Adam Cole getting injured, his own injuries, and then taking time off for a movie role. As a result, his return hasn’t been what it should have been. His feud with Jeff Jarrett was truncated for this feud, and it has had some of the old fire. However, this being his first real big story since the Adam Cole mess, he has to come out of it looking strong. Page can be shuffled into the stuff with Omega easily as Omega has alluded to his friends abandoning him. But this is a must win for MJF for him to be taken seriously.
Mike: I'm going with MJF here unless they have Jeff Jarrett show up and cost him the win, since Jeff is supposed to be chasing the title but was screwed by MJF getting involved.
Anthony: Re-read everything Cory wrote and make it double for me. Page is a made man. MJF, I thought, was one as well. The last 2 years or so have really made me doubt his long term viability. MJF needs this win probably more than he's ever needed one
Richard: Is this the match that starts the winner on the road back into the World Title picture? They have raised the intensity of the feud over the last few weeks. Page seems to be prepped to go back to the top but something gets in the way, and we also get the same with MJF. This should be a good match and I think Page wins.
Big Boom A.J. & Mark Briscoe & Orange Cassidy vs. Johnny TV & MxM Collection.
Cory: I love Mark Briscoe, Orange Cassidy is a top guy for AEW, and Big Boom AJ is in his 14th minute, IMHO. Johnny TV and MxM Collection are designated losers, so they will do the job here for the bigger stars and the outside media guy.
Mike: No way Big Boom AJ doesn't bring the boom and win!
Anthony: Once upon a time, not too long ago, Orange Cassidy was a main eventer standing up for AEW. Mark Briscoe is a man's man who will, unfortunately, never be given the complete respect or push he deserves. AJ seems like a nice guy so I give them the win here. As long as I don't have to see the open up Pokemon cards or the 2nd coming of Honey Boo Boo as timekeeper, I'm fine with this.
Richard: What are Mark Briscoe and Orange Cassidy doing in this match?
