Mark Campbell is live at AEW in Brisbaine, Australia and will be sending along live notes and spoilers from AEW Grand Slam this morning. We thank him in advance.
Unique Talent Note:
Several of my friends said they saw Skye Blue entering with some of the other talents today.
AEW airs on ESPN here so those of us here can see the show live and then go home and watch the Grand Slam broadcast. Cue the Tony Khan Timecop stuff!
Merchandise Note:
AEW is selling an exclusive 1 in 2000 Toni Storm action figure exclusively here at the show. They said at the stands that if they aren't sold out, they will be sold at ShopAEW.com.
I got in the venue a little late and a LOT of merchandise was already sold out, so whatever they brought from the States, they were moving it. They had special Grand Slam Australia shirts as well as merchandise for Buddy Matthews, Death Riders, Cope, Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, Toni Storm, Jay White, Orange Cassidy (is he even here?) as well as hats and replica title belts.
PRE-SHOW NOTES:
The Brisbane Entertainment Centre is very much sold out and the crowd is VERY LOUD.
Arkady is the ring announcer tonight, welcoming everyone.
They are taping Ring of Honor Global Wars first!
ROH Champion Chris Jericho & Big Bill & Bryan Keith vs. Bandido & The Outrunners is opening up. Huge reaction for Jericho and crew when they emerged from the back. There was also a big reaction when Bandido and Jericho faced off at the bell. Outrunners are wearing masks out of respect to Bandido and were announced as Los Outrunners. Big Bandido chants. There was an absolutely manic reaction when Big Bill tagged in with the arena chanting for him. He murdered one of the Outrunners with some insane chops. The audience was so into all of this, it was insane. In the end, Bandido pinned Jericho clean (!) with one of his suplexes. The Learning Tree attacked everyone afterward and Jericho used a chair to inflict punishment. He was halted by the appearance of Powerhouse Hobbs, who was never advertised to be here. Hobbs ran off everyone but Jericho hit him from behind with the chair - TO ZERO EFFECT. Hobbs manhandled Jericho but Big Bill got in the ring. Hobbs was ready to go but Bill backed out of the ring.
Big ovation for Bandido and The Outrunners after they recovered.
Next is ROH Pure Champion Lee Moriarty vs. New Japan's Robbie Eagles. The crowd booed when the rules were explained and it was stated a disqualification would be handed if a closed fist was used after a warning. That was funny. The crowd was super into Robbie since he's a Aussie. Good action. Eagles was the first to exhaust all of his rope breaks. Moriarty scored the win and they enforced the old Code of Honor after the match. Big round of applause for Eagles as he exited.
Mark Davis vs. Tommy Knight. Huge roar when Davis was announced from Australia. Knight is a regular in PWA and MCW here in Aussie. No Don Callis with Davis. It was too beefy men trying to muscle the other in the early going. Knight got a big reaction hitting a DVDR. Lots of meaty punches and strikes and forearms with the crowd yelling MEAT for them. Davis finally scored the win. Physical!
ROH Tag Team Champions Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara vs. MxM Collection is next. MxM had one of the Tag Team belts. Lots of fire for the Champions' entrances. The crowd really loved it when Rhodes would escape a move from Mansoor. Guevara's offense got big reactions. The crowd is HUNGRY and HAPPY to be here. Rule to all the Americans who sit on their hands at these shows weekly from WWE, AEW, etc. We don't get a lot of these types of shows, but you do, so enjoy those blessings and don't whine about it. Dustin brought down the house teasing a dive but then doing an AWFUL Spinaroonie type thing, which was to distract the challengers from Guevara flying off the top to the floor. Great stuff. MxM almost had Sammy pinned after a big Mace Black Hole Slam but Dustin saved the day at the last second and the crowd chanted "Thank you Dustin." Rhodes hit a Destroyer. Guevara scored the pinfall after a swanton on Mace. Very entertaining, made much more so by the fans.
Mace stole the ROH Tag Team Championship belt again after the bell!
They announced Momo Watanabe from STARDOM is in attendance.
ROH Women's Champion Athena vs. Alex Windsor appears to be the Global Wars main event. Very back and forth athletic drive bout. Athena tried to bully Windsor early but she wasn't to be deterred. Athena went to the top for the O-Face but was caught and Windsor slammed her into the ring. Windsor nailed several headbutts while trying to put Athena into position for a spinning DDT off the ropes. She achieved that, scoring a two count. The fans were clapping and rallying beind Windsor. Athena nailed a DDT after avoiding a spinning clothesline. Athena nailed a tremendous looking O-Face and scored the pinfall. Enjoyable.
They are changing up for AEW Grand Slam Australia.
